A great university in an inexpensive city- one of the best universities for being a student!
It's a nice Campus, with everyone ready to help and make your experience enjoyable. Manchester is a great place for students, it's not too touristic, has lots of students, and there are lots of student discounts everywhere. There are lots of places to eat or just enjoy your morning coffee around campus, there's wide selection of clubs and societies and everyone can find something for themselves
Bums on seats Uni. They really don't care about students they just want your money. They don't really take notice if your there or not so long as you get good grades.
Best social life. Great people and great facilities.
I had the absolute best 3 years of my life at Manchester. The standard of lectures was exceptional and the ability to get involved with student life and societies is second to none. I do not know anybody who didn’t like the uni. I met the most fantastic people and friends for life. Most people stay on to life in Manchester after because it’s a smaller cheaper London.
Just finished my first year here, it is a very good university but as other reviews have said, the staff can come across quite rude and full of themselves. A lot of students here are the same. Clubs and societies are poor - a lot of them won't accept you if you don't have experience or aren't talented in a particular area which is annoying and can make you feel quite lonely sometimes because there's nothing to do. Other than these points the university itself is good, a lot of support and libraries etc available.
Overall a nice university. Very good facilities. Lots of places to study, eat, meet people, do sports. I haven’t been involved into societies. The SU was helpful but not that much. Careers service can be very helpful to find a job. Internet was okay, although it was slow at times and everytime I opened my laptop, i had to reconnect for it to work.
'Neglagence to diligence is ignorance'. Great Uni. Come here. Social life is brilliant and if you like going out its top drawer. Had a great time here and when people want to crack down with work; they do. Staff are generally good, but its quite liberal so be aware of some strikes. Also remember - People who do reviews are usually a bit weird anyway so don't always trust 'em.

My time at this university has been the worst time of my life, no question. From day one I felt isolated and alone. At such a big university you would think this wouldn't be the case, but the social events are poor and unless you already have a talent for something there are no societies to cater to you. Different universities seem to attract different sorts of people, and Manchester seems to attract people who are completely apathetic about everything. Many of the students here seem to have no desire to do any work, no one is enthusiastic about anything and many people are very emotionally distant with no apparent desire to make anything beyond a superficial connection with anyone. As a passionate and enthusiastic person, I have found it very difficult trying to have conversations with people who don't care about anything. The organisation is a joke. The study facilities are non existent. Course content was interesting and career service really helpful, but overall a waste of time
I'm currently finishing my 2nd year as CS student in this University. In short, don't go here. Teaching: If you want to prepare for the lab or the exam - you have to Google, Google and Google. For a lot of subjects, students go and watch Stanford Uni lectures online to understand the material. No comments. 3rd year project is an illusion, student proposal is an illusion, as you would have to find to find the supervisor yourself. Once you start doing that, you realise everyone replies with "I'm full." And then you realise that good staff-proposed projects are taken by the time you receive this pointless answer. Campus/Facilities: CS building is awful on the outside and dull on the inside. Careers Service: it's almost non existent. University relies on you doing all the search when it actually comes to finding a placement, for instance. The will not help you if you are international student, they won't support you. Awful experience.
I love manchester. it's beautiful. the people are lovely as well, better than anyone from london
They are always fixing things but the quality does not improve.
Very big, diverse university. Huge range of societies and teams, and many different subjects. Library is huge and there are many other study areas available, however there is no way enough study space for all students and it is often very difficult to find anywhere to sit and revise. University is quite close to the city centre, but much of the accommodation is not in nice places, mainly victoria park and fallow field is quite rough too. Overall quite good, lots of opportunity and help available.
I don't care too much as long as the uni has a good reputation.
Okay university, must go to the Freshers fairs to easily get involved in anything otherwise feels like there is no opportunities afterwards.
I am a distance learning student and I find very little support from tutors. Some tutors are amazing but most are very disappointing. No follow-up at all. Assignment marking is usually not fair. I receive very little feedback on how to improve in my assignments. For example, I got 50/100 on one assignment with a feedback saying "excellent piece of work". Further, I don't think that those tutors care about how much knowledge we gain, the are making a huge deal about critique skills and writing skills. You can easily get a distinction if you write an assignment containing only critiques with no scientific basis, and fail if you link critiques with the knowledge you learn throughout the course. Again, I am not talking about all tutors. Some are very helpful and provide realistic feedback and help students improve. As an online student, I hardly ever get the chance to participate in any uni events.
There needs to be more social events for people to make friends. Unlike other University who have events every week, there are very few student nights here.

UoM is sux !!! UoM boasting (lying) of their reputation all the times rather than really working out to support their students. You will be treated like a fool here and most of the academic staffs showing no respect at all to the students, they are behaving very rude. Their daily working protocol is the notion "backing up each other". This is when an academician committing wrong doing, the other academician would attempt to cover up the mistake, exaggerating by boasting the academician reputation (e.g won a Nobel prize) and turning the blame to the students by finding thousands of weaknesses in the students to counter. Horrible conspiracy indeed. As a student, you should find a university with supportive academicians and environments, don't believe in 'marketings' and 'advertisements'. Alan Turing is the past, you will not even be the next Nobel Prize winner by coming to UoM. But surely by coming to UoM, you will be a fool and be served as a fool . Be a wise consumer..
Everything is as you'd expect from a great city red-brick university, except the student union sucks. Like the student union is so bad in so many ways, you just have to come here to see it.
Manchester University claims that they are looking after students’ wellbeing and care about their difficulty but my experience was exact opposite. I found the university very money oriented, as I get loads of call and emails for asking for money which I shouldn’t pay. I was student’s rep and witness loads of lecture and attachments being cancelled. Examiner for final examination was changed just a few days before exams. I can mention a huge list of shortfalls in the post graduate Dentistry but all of these shows lack of attention of people in charge of the course toward the students.
I have studied at three different universities and there are certain qualities about Manchester that I really don't like. Firstly there is no campus feel. Secondly, teachers at my previous universities were very down to Earth and students were "normal". Here, lots of students are very middle class and the staff are not friendly and sometimes confrontational. In one class, the lecturer had a five minute arguement with a student who was speaking to someone next to him. This was in a huge lecture hall in Roscoe and there was barely any audible noise. I have heard that this happened frequently with this lecturer and there are others who are really not nice. The university feels artificial and like the only thing that matters is the reputation of the university. It feels like a business and students are livestock. There is no open door policy. Also, there were huge numbers of students in my classes here (over 200 in my first year).
Campus is nice, societies are all pretty awful if you don't like alcohol.
Internet is a bit unreliable sometimes, but the societies are endless and recent refurbishments to facilities are paying off.
Personally I haven't been that involved in this side of university life. So I can't really comment on the Students Union/Career service. I went to two societies and they were alright, they felt a bit unorganised but not bad considering they are run by students who have their own courses etc.
I'm writing this review as someone on the Autistic Spectrum and someone with longstanding mental health issues (depression, anxiety, suicidal tendencies). The university is absolutely HORRIBLE at dealing with and being compassionate for ANY mental health circumstances. As well as that they provided me with ZERO SUPPORT for my sport Taekwondo (in the olympics) in which I was a Commonwealth gold medalist and comepeting for Great Britain regularly. I do not compete in Taekwondo after being at this university. There really isn't any cause to go to this university if you have any history of mental health or sporting prowess. The majority of the staff undermine you as they don't take your mental health seriously, the support services are appalling (to the point where I attempted suicide and they referred me for a mental health appointment in 2 months), the mitigating circumstances are ridiculously hard to get and even if you get them you have a pay a stupid amount of money. Dont go here.
Study areas are noisy and often overcrowded. Library opening hours during summer are extremely limited at a time when post grad students are trying to do dissertation work. I would a advise seeking opportunities at other institutes which may have better facilities and cheaper course fees.
Deeply disheartened about how little support I got after been diagnosed with a learning disability. Do not attend.
I haven't heard one comment about how it helps you land a job and prepare you to actually be effective in whatsoever course you're taking (this is just a whole lot of business).
Fantastic university, questionable SU
If you get involved in the societies and clubs that are available it will definitely help you make the most of your time at Manchester as this is were many people meet a lot of their friends. The students union host events often such as Pangaea festival twice a year and Athletics union night every Wednesday which are pretty fun. I would say if you don't get involved then there isn't a huge sense of community at Manchester and you may end up feeling a bit isolated, get involved early on and don't leave it too late.

Manchester is great and huge. It provides outstanding facilities to students. Apart from being a slick uni, the quality of education is amazing. I have just graduated from the business school and the respect I got from employers are fantastic. The lecturers are world leaders in their research, the careers service is one of the best, the students union is the largest- the list goes on. Besides, the city itself is amazing being cheap and convenient in every way for a student population.
The South campus is full of great facilities, including the Students Union, libraries, cafes, computer clusters etc and is in a good location, very easy to get to from any of the accommodation areas. The uni has a very active students union with events such as Pangaea festival in September every year, and creating a student wristband for freshers week with organised events. There is a clubs/societies fair at the beginning of the year to showcase the different options, but societies can also be joined online which is pretty useful - good range include sports, creative societies such as fashion or blogging, international societies, societies for different subjects/schools etc so theres something for everyone
The campus is great with great facilities, however, the residneces were nit situated correctly.
The university of "bums on seats". You are just a number here. Expect lectures of 200+ people and little one to one time with tutors. No campus feeling. No prestige factor compared to LSE, Warwick or Oxbridge.

Amazing city, great facilities and cheap!
The SU is fantastic at Manchester and even holds the largest student festival in Europe 3 times a year - Pangaea! You can find any club or society at the dressers fair in September , but if you miss that you can join online! Manchester have massive ability on the sports side of things, but don't worry about that interfering with your social life because Wednesday will be your night! There are more academic societies too - something to suit everyone!
Students union isn't cheap but the halls bar Squirrels is £1.30 a pint!
It was hard to come to another country for studies, but the university has been very welcoming and supportive. The way the things are done here is just incredible. easily the best desition I made was to come to this university.

Its a very good student city, the university is very well equipped, only complaint is the wifi is very slow
I love this university, great city and people!
The rooms are small, cosy the view is disaappointing a car park. The reception are kind and friendly. The door locks avoid us from interacting with everyone in the building. There is no wi-fi
Victoria Halls are great place to be close to uni and are also one of the much nicer accommodation on offer. More quiet than other halls however still plenty of people to have flat parties with and have a good time

Honestly, I can't think of anywhere else I'd go to study Life Sciences. The money available is crazy, all the facilities are top-notch and the support is excellent.
I'm from London and despite how hard it is to say Manchester is better in almost every way.
Such a great uni with a really fun atmosphere - so much going on, it's always buzzing.
I can't really fault the university. The only thing that would make me mark it down in facilities is the fact that us students who are paying £9,000 a year still have to pay for printer credit. Ridiculous.

The students union is amazing with care for you and clubs and Societies like there is a quiditch one will you believe it, also there is a modern 24 hour building called Alan Gilbert like a library but less silent, they have a sleep pod which is awesome, also library is huge got lost too many times
Manchester is such a vibrant university with loads of events going on. The societies are really good and there is so much to get involved with.

Great learning experience overall.
Manchester has the biggest student population and it shows. you will always find the right people for you and the right halls of residence and places to hang out that suit you too. My course was robust and challenging, with a good level of support and a great cohort to get me through it! If you're an extrovert then get on UCAS and apply now. If you're not but you like meeting people, get on UCAS and apply now. If you like your peace and quiet, perhaps not!
Great university filled with world class researchers.
As a international fresher (Norwegian), I find Manchester a place I could truly settle. Going through a Mechanical Engineering degree, time just runs by. Indeed there is a lot of work to do, what else could you expect from an engineering course, but there is also so many extracurricular activities you could take part in. Among a few, the once I am included in is the Swim team, Mechsoc (Mech. Eng. Society), SEM team, and I would love to do a lot more (unfortunately each day is limited to 24 hours per day...). A bit surprisingly is how many measures the university does to follow up their students both academically and socially. With tutorials in each course, PASS and personal tutorial, you are covered in every possible way. PASS is a weekly meeting lead by students from the years above, combining both social and academic work in a smaller group, and personal tutorial is a weekly meeting between a student group of 5-6 students and a professor, where you could ask whatever you want.

Absolutely no faults! Such a fun place to be, with so much going on. The teaching is fantastic and they give you so much help and advice with everything. The facilities are great and there are so many opportunities to get involved in a huge range of things and meet so many people

So far could not have had a better experience. So much diversity, so many people to make friends with. Every club under the sun. The facilities are awesome and there's just a really good vibe to the place. The sheer variety and quantity of food available here provides a really sociable vibe.
The Student Union and societies are great! There's free wifi all across the campus, and PC Clusters in just about every building. Cafes everywhere, you can get your stuff printed, libraries, common rooms. Overall, a great place.
Anything you want to do at uni you can find here, opportunities for everyone and anything!
