My journey to UCL has been unlike most. I arrived here not just as a student, but as a medical doctor and public health worker from Sudan, a nation currently grappling with war, displacement, and a collapsed health system. Choosing UCL's Institute for Global Health was one of the best decisions I have ever made. In just a short time, it has provided more than just an education; it has provided a sanctuary for learning and a platform to transform my lived experience into actionable knowledge. The support system, from the academic staff to the SU Advice Service, has been incredible in helping a student like me, who is also the primary earner for a family back home, navigate the complexities of life in London. To any future student, especially those from conflict-affected regions: UCL is a place that will challenge you, but it will also value your unique perspective. It is a community where your resilience is your greatest asset, and your ambition to create change is met.
Eduroam is very patchy, but I love the campus and the societies i've joined. Not had much experience with careers service, but they seem on it and orgnaised.
I had a hard time accommodating away from home, however, UCL's team of Mental Health support, SAs and SRAs helped me through it. The lectures are very well structured and planned out to interconnect with certain modules. This helps my understanding of specific topics. The societies at UCL also offer opportunities and weekly gatherings to socialise and for personal development.
The campus is under construction and they did not tell us, we had to discover that in person
I’m genuinely impressed by how well UCL is organised. The university not only provides excellent academic knowledge but also creates an environment where you can truly experience and enjoy your youth. I especially appreciate services like the Careers team, who continuously strive to support students and offer a wide range of valuable opportunities
UCL’s MSc in Information Security is a one-year, NCSC-certified programme that combines strong theoretical foundations in cryptography and secure systems with practical modules on privacy, malware, and risk management. Taught by leading researchers in one of the UK’s top computer science departments, it offers excellent academic rigor, strong industry links, and great networking opportunities in London. While it’s intensive and expensive—especially for international students—the degree is highly respected and provides strong employability in cybersecurity, consulting, and research roles.
The campus is excellent, with everyone being very friendly. The teaching facilities are state-of-the-art, and there are numerous places for self-study and dining.
I have had a great experience so far, I enjoyed the welcome week boat tour which helped settle me in.
Excellent support, very friendly and helpful staff very keen to help students.
My first week at UCL felt like a whirlwind of new experiences. Walking into lectures for the first time was both nerve-wracking and exciting, especially seeing how much independence is expected compared to school. Meeting so many people from different backgrounds was the highlight — every conversation gave me a fresh perspective. One memorable moment was getting lost on my way to a lecture and ending up in a café, where I unexpectedly met a group of students who later became my first friends here. By the end of the week, the nerves had turned into motivation. What stood out just as much as the lectures was how welcoming everyone at UCL has been. The teaching staff were approachable and eager to answer questions, which made the transition into university learning much less intimidating. The campus help team were always ready to guide us, whether it was finding lecture halls or sorting out technical issues. Even the student volunteers went out of their way to make freshers feel at home.
