We are thrilled to reveal the top 20 best UK universities for student internet services, according to authentic student reviews on StudentCrowd.
What makes a good university WiFi network?
Students are connected to the internet everywhere on campus, usually wirelessly connected to Eduroam, a popular academic WiFi network. Having a fast connection from the moment you arrive on campus makes work for staff and students simpler. Often students want to access online resources, watch lectures or access email from anywhere.
During the academic term, WiFi is needed to submit assignments, join online meetings and contact fellow students. Some students also have many devices connected in their student halls. Running gaming consoles and streaming TV shows requires an efficient connection to run smoothly. It's hard to think of anything more important to the university experience than good WiFi!
From our top 20 winners, there are a few stand-out services offered. At the University of Southampton (#5), it's clear that providing students with a mobile app has been effective. Other universities provide excellent IT support. For example, the University of Aberdeen (#7) has a live chat service for students to ask the IT team questions quickly.
How was this top 20 award league table created?
To calculate this league table, we analysed 24,041 authentic student reviews written on StudentCrowd between June 2021 and May 2023. When students review their university, they give it a rating out of 5 stars for ‘WiFi and Internet’. We used this rating across all universities in the UK to showcase the BEST 20 according to students.
The StudentCrowd Awards 2023 is the only university ranking based 100% on verified students in the UK, using their ac.uk email address. Please note this includes international students who attend UK universities.

University of Greenwich
The facilities provided by university is the latest with wifi connection in every building. The student union of Greenwich is always accessible and ready to help the students in every way possible. The faculty is helpful and provide guidance any time you want.
Topping our rankings for WiFi and Internet this year is the University of Greenwich. Their Eduroam system is praised for reliability and connectivity across the whole of the university. Should any issues arise, Greenwich provides support to students through their IT Service Desk.

The University of Sheffield
The college has achieved full coverage of wifi, opening up a smart campus. The teaching and service platform based on wireless network architecture is increasingly entering many fields of teachers and students' work, study and life, playing a huge role in teaching, scientific research, life and information services.
Reviews for the University of Sheffield often mention the speed and availability of WiFi for their students. The institution provides a separate wireless network for gaming consoles, as well as extensive user guides on how to connect a range of devices to their Eduroam network.

... There is always tonnes of support (even more than a lot of people care for!) and EVERYTHING is super close together, literally nothing is more than 5 minutes from halls including the incredible Strath Sport... Wifi is literally everywhere too, and very quick, overall an unbeatable uni in the best location.
Students at the University of Strathclyde have commented on the excellent coverage of WiFi across its locations. Eduroam has been well implemented at the UoS, with additional offerings provided to cover devices which are not compatible with Eduroam.

University College London (UCL)
UCL provides a good quality of learning environment and resources. The facilities are good. The staffs are nice. I really enjoy studying at UCL.
Eduroam is the wireless provider for University College London, with connectivity in halls of residence and across campus, as well as in other higher education institutions. The university provides a wide range of FAQ support, as well as extensive troubleshooting assistance if required.

University of Southampton
Southampton Uni is a great uni to attend, the campus is really pretty, has lots of greenery, own gym, and a lot of peaceful places to study such as the Hartley library.... Careers service are very supportive and always ready to help when needed, also the WiFi has never stumped me in the past, great for studying.
The University of Southampton features again in our top 20 list this year, with students quoting the reliability of their network offering in reviews of the university. The ‘MySouthampton’ app continues to be a worthwhile offering from the institution, helping students to keep track of their lectures, emails and navigation around the city.

Ulster University
I have felt at home since the day I arrived. From the front door to the flat the staff and students have been so welcoming and I have felt so comfortable during my time here. The facilities are brilliant and the WiFi is really good.
Students at Ulster University have been impressed with the WiFi available to them, which has seen them break into the top 20 for this category. The institution provides lots of information to its students on how to connect to their Eduroam network, and their digital services team offer support on a range of topics from cybersecurity to media services.

University of Aberdeen
Aesthetically pleasing (for the most part) campus. Nice library and good student union building. Internet is fast with good coverage around campus. Lecture theatres are relatively close which makes walking to your next lecture quick.
The strong support services at the University of Aberdeen for their wireless networks have kept their internet services operating smoothly this year, as they retain a space in the top 20. Live chatting with the IT Service Desk is available online, and failing that, students are able to get in-person support at both university libraries.

Excellent facilities, staff, events, food and teachers...My block has a cold water machine, silent study areas, a library, extensive gardens with seating, meeting areas and rooms, a bar, loads of common rooms and available space and surprisingly good wifi and food...
The University of Bristol has moved up from #16 to #8 this year in our internet rankings. Throughout the pandemic, the institution was praised for its online learning offerings, which were successfully supported by its wireless network. Should they have issues, students at the University of Bristol also have access to a wide range of troubleshooting tips.

I love uni here the wifi is always good, loads of Places to study
The University of Portsmouth have broken into the top 20 this year for Wifi and Internet, with students praising the internet on campus. The IT Training Team provide free sessions throughout the year which cover basic skills as well as more specific advice on using software for assignments.

Fantastic internet throughout campus and accomadation, excellent libary facilities
Eduroam has been well implemented at the University of Dundee, as well as a separate wireless network which supports gaming consoles and other smart devices. The university provides video tutorials on how to connect to their network, and students praise the connectivity of the internet across both campus and accommodation.

Nottingham Trent University (NTU)
NTU are very informative about activities and events happening throughout the week. The campus is nice with good WIFI, everything is clean and Newton Building is amazing

In reviews for the institution, students reference the reliability of WiFi across their entire experience at the university. Students also have free access to LinkedIn Learning throughout their time at NTU.

Great wifi, great reception team. Quick response with maintenance requests. Great facilities!
The University of Warwick also remains in our top 20 this year. High-speed internet and great support for students has proved to be popular, with students still able to access help through an online support desk and track the progress of their tickets. Halls of residence have access to both wireless and wired internet connections.

Sheffield Hallam University
There’s plenty of people to go to for support, WiFi is quick so easy to do work from campus, plenty of societies for both sports and other things
Students at Sheffield Hallam University have praised the speed and connectivity of the WiFi on campus, making those work sessions between lectures as smooth as possible. Students have access to a range of software through the ‘AppsAnywhere’ service, as well as being able to use LinkedIn Learning to support their studies.

The university is a great space to open yourself up to a range of different subjects areas and experiences. There is always support if needed.
Moving up from #20 to #14 this year is the University of St Andrews. As well as having access to reliable and quick internet, students can also take advantage of the week-long ‘Short Loan Laptops’ in event of a tech disaster. The university has also chosen Ecosia as its search engine of choice, in a move to meet their net zero carbon strategy targets.

The facilities on campus are modern and well-maintained, including state-of-the-art classrooms, libraries, sports facilities, and student accommodation. The campus is also located in a beautiful setting, surrounded by greenery and overlooking the historic city of Canterbury.
As well as providing fast and reliable internet, the University of Kent also features a wide range of accessibility offerings. Students are able to use Sensus Access to convert common text formats in audio files or braille formats. The institution also offers a wide range of guides on their website to help students with common issues they might encounter.

Beautiful campus with a sense of history and modernity, great teaching facilities. A lot of guidance and activities for students. Teachers are kind and patient. Perfect connection of Wifi in the campus.

With excellent WiFi connectivity at key locations such as the library and lecture buildings, Royal Holloway have moved into the top 20 this year. IT Support is provided both online as well as via a helpdesk in the Davison Building. The university provides free cyber security advice, as well as a range of free software to support studies.

Eduroam is available at the University of Glasgow, with students praising the quality of the internet in their reviews. Students at the institution have access to a wide range of software using their student email address, as well as gaining some exclusive discounts towards other products. The university also provides regular advice on how to avoid scams which target students.
