Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.
The accommodation is very nice
Extremely well-located, large en-suite rooms and a massive gym for residents. Very nice and helpful desk staff.
Nice to live in, especially when you have good flatmates :) The rooms are a decent size and the kitchen/living rooms are quite good
Possibly the most convenient accommodation in terms of location, but this is a price paid for by the lack of "social experience" as compared to Endcliffe and Ranmoor accommodations.
It is in a good location being in the city.
I love living in Allen Court! The staff are really nice and the equipment is perfect! But our supervisor of the room still doesn’t contact us.
Perfect location especially for international first years to get to know the city and get to classes on time. WiFi is absolutely trash at times but it’s manageable. Flatmates were welcoming and warm and kitchen was well equipped.
The best of this place is the location nearby to almost all the important buildings of the campus and city center. The furniture is old. Walls here are paper-thin (even someone is taking a shower you can hear). The expectative that you got when you see the videos at webpage of University’s Accommodations is not what you are going to receive, so it’s very expensive. The bath room is impossible to use, in my case it doesn’t have toiler roll holding, only has a bath courting so when you use it water start flooding (even you take a short shower nearby to the wall) so after you can’t use it, the flush is very weak so you have to keep flushing multiple times or hold it for a few seconds for the toilet bowl to be flushed completely. On the other hand, the heater is right in front of your legs under the desk, so a very heat gets up to your face feeling dizzy and your devices (laptop and table) could be damage. As international post grade student I’m very disappointed with this service of
A lovely place to live, study, relax and be near university, as well as shops. Very nice communal spaces and gym, which is a brilliant addition. Only a short walk from the university of Sheffield and a tram stop that can take you many places. A fantastic place to be a student !
Overall nice but I used it during year 1 which was the year pandemic started so social wise it wasn’t as great compared to now. The facilities are new and clean but circuit laundry can be pricy and hard to get to if your in a further block.
Quite lonely. Overall management is very good. No cleaning facilities for flats however they do clean communal areas.
If you're an international student, Allen Court is a great place to live, and your roommates are mostly locals who can help you practice your English. The activity room is nice, but the ping pong table is a bit small. WIFI is very fast. Prices may be a bit higher than elsewhere, and room hygiene is absolutely fine (but depends on your roommate).
Was here as a fresher in the first lockdown. Not great experience for me. Maintenance would come into the flat to check on the empty rooms with no warning. They put in new fire doors while I was living there, which really disturbed online lectures. Wifi wasn't great but I think was was due to a high volume of people there. Social spaces were limited when corona was big, we were told to leave if there were too many people. They wouldn't come and clean the flats or corridors to your flat, only the communal corridors which were very clean. Security would shut down big parties. Flats weren't filled with people, I only lived with two other people. Reception staff were great, and the laundry facilities were good. Generally not a great environment when I was there, hope its better now.
You cannot go wrong with the location of Allen Court as it’s so close to most university buildings and bars and restaurants in the city. I cannot say it’s value for money especially compared to cheaper private accommodation in the city. I wished I would have listened when people said how much more sociable Endcliffe Is. It has been painfully boring here and isolating compared to Endcliffe even during the pandemic. I thought I would prefer a quieter accommodation but it all depends on how good your flat mates are. I didn’t arrive with a clean room and the WiFi is different to the university WiFi so it’s a nightmare to log on to with out a IP address so a lot of things don’t work sometimes. Also it’s good to be noted that Allen court is actually run by IQ students not the University (they part own it) so you often find it different rules for us and management often are not clued up about the same.
Fantastic location so close to university and the town centre. but the rooms are small and very unclean. Also, the social space is isolated from our block. The management are terrible and the girl on reception is very rude. there are much better student accommodations in Sheffield.
The location is excellent, but that’s pretty much the only good thing I can say about this place. To start with, the walls are too thin, and I can hear everything my neighbour is saying, so I feel a lack of privacy. Moreover, their service is chaotic. In May, an issue occurred in my flat, causing no hot water to be available. It took them several separate attempts over a few weeks to fix this, before the issue reoccured shortly after. Afterwards, a new issue occurred causing cold water to be inaccessible, and when we contacted maintenance, they did not do a proper check and insisted it was fine during their first visit. After a few more visits they were finally able to resolve this, but it didn’t take long until a new issue occurred: the hot water started to have a horrible smell. They seemed to be incompetent and did not offer any type of compensation for the inconvenience.
Better than Ranmoor/Endcliffe but would have looked into other places had the thought occurred. AC has convenient location and great common room, but depends on who your flatmates are.
Great accommodation i really enjoyed my stay at allen court
Perfect location but no cleaning service
Recently refurbished so at a very good standard, it is in close proximity to all the uni buildings (5 or 10min walk to most things). You dont get a cleaner for your flat. There is a common room which holds some events but it still feels a little isolated.
An extremely sad and lonely tower block almost completely devoid of student atmosphere. Felt extremely claustrophobic, especially when I did not get along with my roommates at all.
I lived a 3 minute walk from all my lectures and labs and could see the building from my kitchen window. Only a 5 minute walk to most bars that societies go to. Super fast Wi-Fi and lots of social opportunities organised! No cleaning services from the university, it is all up to the tennants
I recently moved out of Allen Court, and have been so pleased with my stay. Fantastic experience. CLEAN. MODERN. FRIENDLY. FUN. Rooms have been newly refurbished and are spacious and modern, including double bed and en-suite bathroom. All facilities available are really handy, including their Basefaults system, so you can report any maintenance problems in your flat and repairs are made promptly. The main Common Room is equip with Cinema Room and Games Console room which can be freely used, or booked out for events- An added bonus to hire out games from Reception. Mentors are also available in the Common Room each evening for help and guidance. Staff were always really helpful and friendly, especially keen to lend a helping hand at the beginning of the move in year. Had a great stay at Allen Court, in terms of the other student accommodation I've seen, I would definitely recommend Allen Court to Sheffield Students.
I have just moved out of Allen Court after my first year at Uni and I loved it there. I had a refurbished, double bedroom with on-suite and its was super clean, spacious and the kitchens were a really high spec. Allen Court is the best location for going out to the bars and restaurants in town and got on well with all my flat mates. The staff on site are really helpful and kind and let me back into my room when i lost my fob one time. All round the best accommodation in Sheffield for your first year.
I lived in Allen Court last year in a refurbished room, all my friends also had a refurbished room. My room was very modern and spacious with an en-suite bathroom. The kitchen was very large with lots of storage space. All the mail is delivered to mailboxes in reception which you can collect anytime. The reception sign for all parcels which you can collect from 3pm-8pm. The staff are super helpful, nothing is too much trouble for them. The blocks and common room are always clean and tidy. I was also a member of the gym, the staff are very friendly and helpful. Could not recommend enough :)
Carpet worn through to the concrete. Front door doesn't lock, anyone can walk in. Kitchen cupboards damaged. Oven burned. Table broken. Electrical equipment provide late.
It was fine. ASK4 is a horrible internet provider though.
Positives: -Location is perfect, close to town/big Tescos/uni. -Rooms are good sizes, have large notice boards, good storage, good furniture and relatively big mirrors. -Room was clean on arrival. -Kitchens have ample space. -Mentors are helpful Negatives: - If its warm outside it will be 100x worse in the flats, hardly any ventilation. Unfortunately this will also occur if there's more than 6 people in the kitchen, so if you have people over for pres etc it will get so hot we legit had to pass round a freeze block during freshers. -Bathrooms get so humid so get mouldy really fast. - Kicthens don't get cleaned but accommodation that's the same/cheaper do, which is fine but also adds to the price being over valued. - Plastic isn't recycled here which is odd. - Have had the reception staff be rude to me when I asked if I could get my post. - Quite noisy at times, especially from floor above
The living condition is alright but some facilities are old and problematic. My toilet licked seriously once and the guys who came in and checked it told me they have no idea where is licking after an hour checking. Also the system of getting deliveries is not efficient. You can only get it when it is 3-8pm and only after you get the message in your mailbox. Stuff here are alright most of the time but once I went for my mail, there s only one guy at the reception I said"can I get my mail sir" and he said "unbelievable". What does that suppose to mean?! and he was being super impatient when he went to get them, let me find my own slot and signed when I cannot find it he treated me as idiot and didn't even check my id. I personally will not live here next year and I think there are better places to stay in Sheffield rather than Allen Court
Rooms are so nice but Allen Court seriously lacks a good social atmosphere! - Flats didn't really mix with other flats - The 'common room' is by reception and never used! - Very close to union and library - Closer to town so shorter walk back from nights out! - Endcliffe (where most students live) is a half hour walk away
not the place you wanna be as a sociable person
It's really good. Situated at an amazing place. Wonder why so many people go for Endcliffe when Allen Court is located in the best lace ever. 15 mins walk to the city centre, 5 mins walk to the library, the Arts Tower and honestly just anywhere most lectures take place. Very very good. Spacious rooms as well!
It is quite a good room, it just wasn't clean when I first got here. However it is very conveniently located for those who are doing engineering courses especially as it is a five minute walk from the main buildings that you will have your lectures in. It is also only about 7 mins away from the IC (main library and computer area) and about 10 mins away from the student union.
I really enjoyed living in halls, I had the best flat and the best floor. Everyone on my floor got along and we all hung out together. living in halls also made my social life at uni be amazing because I was friends with everyone on the floor and in my flat from the first night we all moved in and I'm still really close with all of them.
Allen Court has been brilliant this year, despite some problems with over zealous wardens and dodgy wifi
Management are very bad and unhelpful. My bike was stolen from the main courtyard - the gate to this courtyard was broken meaning anyone could access this courtyard, which is why I believed my bike was stolen. Upon mentioning this, I wasn't taken seriously until threatening official action through the University complaints procedure. 3 days worth of CCTV was kept, which was deemed unsatisfactory by investigating Police officers, however I believe this has now been improved. Management staff can also be very unapproachable and unfriendly. Overall though, the building is maintained well. Rooms contain lots of storage and are well kept. Disappointed that communal areas are not cleaned by the cleaning staff as this was done in Endcliffe Village at the same rent. No TV port in bedrooms, whilst it is advertised as there being one.
Maintenence are virtually useless and often rude Prime location The almost perfect living experience
