All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

All around been rubbish. Rats everywhere, maintenance doesn’t get fixed. Staff don’t give a toss about the students.
Recommend an ethernet cable. Very close to shops. Close to west street to if you want that. Recommend getting a heater or at least a few blankets. Windows seem thin, might want some earplugs. And bring the bug killer, watch out for silverfish.
Nice accomdation, good location really convinent for people on city campus

Overall good place , slightly expensive but worth it
Great location, great staff, great events, can't complain honestly
It is very good and best location, the service is amazing and we get the quick response
My experience at Westhill Hall has been great. The staff are always super friendly and helpful Ben, Joumana, Meena and Jordan especially are always super helpful and supportive. Maintenance and Housekeeping are lovely and supportive too and prompt at fixing any issues. Westhill hall is alway a great value for what you get as well as being in a perfect location!
Thanks for your review, we're glad that you've had a good experience with staff during your stay! (PS - we think the Westhill Team are all great too!)
They’re great support and help all the time :)
Thank you for your review, we're glad that our reception staff have made you feel welcome!
Don't get me wrong the accomodation wasn't a bad price for the location. However the amount of issues that are present it isn't at all worth it. The fact that they offer gift cards for people to write 5 star reviews should tell you everything you need to know. - no working oven for the whole year been told it was fixed when it hasn't been - no working lock on the door which they only fixed 5 months into the year - flatmates toilet flooded and they haven't fixed it weeks later so there's toilet water with feaces in when u flush that leaks - staff are friendly and helpful however not with maintance requests and you never know if reception will be open or shut due to them opening and closing when they feel like it - new heaters that you can't turn on as they are shut off downstairs to save costs - flatmates shower broke and wasn't fixed in a timely manner Positives are friendly staff and location, however staff last year were sleeping with tenants so maybe too friendly
Thank you for leaving us a review, we're sorry to hear that your experience wasn't to standard. We encourage students to raise maintenance issues either through their student app, or via a member of staff in reception. Students who raise issues via the app feature can see updates on the job, including when it is still in progress and when it has been resolved. Sometimes our maintenance team will be waiting on specific parts that have been ordered in order to resolve maintenance issues. If you feel a job is taking too long to complete, our reception staff are happy to contact maintenance and investigate what is going on. Our heating system is linked to sensors on radiators, this means that heating switches on when there is movement within rooms. The choice for this is reflected in our company committments to environmental sustainability. Sustainability and ESG 2024 | Unite Group
Overall I would have to say my experience here was quite disappointing. I booked the en-suite premium range for £110 in 23/24 so the price was worth the size of the room. But the price for 24/25 went up to £121 which is not worth the price anymore. The room with the furniture and toilet are so old, torn and broken. What peeves me the most is the laundry service. I do laundry once a week and MOST of the time my clothes come out still DAMP. I even tumble dry it twice and it was still came out damp and warm. The reception is also close randomly most of the time. It used to open from 7am-10pm straight but now it changed to 10am-12pm and 2pm-7pm. While the distance to university isn’t the worse but it’s also not the best. I find myself just buying food in uni a lot because going back and forth would take around half an hour. With all these issues, I honestly would have rather paid slightly more to live in accommodation that is closer and has better facilities.
Thank you for your review, we're sorry to hear that you found your stay with us unsatisfactory. We encourage students to report any broken furniture to our team so that this may be reviewed and replaced. Our laundromats are operated by circuit laundry, any issues which require refunding can be raised via email to refunds@circuitgroup.com Our reception open hours are 10am-12pm, 3pm-8pm and 10pm-12am. If reception staff are unavailable we have an emergency number displayed in reception which can get you in contact with someone. Further, we are sorry to hear that you felt the property you stayed in was inconventiently far for your commute to university. We have a range of properties across the city in order to accomodate students where they see fit best.
Westhill Hall has been one of the best choices I’ve made since moving to university. Staff have been welcoming and helpful since the beginning, maintenance requests have been dealt with quickly and the courtyard is always kept clean. Westhill also has one of the best locations, it’s right next to west street where all the night life takes place, there’s a Tesco down the road and it’s a 10min walk into town/ university. I’ve enjoyed my year here so much that I’ve reapplied for next year!
Thank you for your review, we're glad you enjoy the property's facilities and have returned back to us for the new academic year!
i Iove it here and Tiff is extremely helpful and lovely!
Thanks so much for your kind words! The reception is open from 7am-10pm everyday and the staff are always happy to help out with any issues or just stop for a chat! They love running events (blind date with a book, meditation, movie nights, plant giveways, too many to list!!) We're really glad you are enjoying your time here! It's so close to the centre of town and University buildings, it's a great place for students :)
It has been a pleasure. I am especially impressed with Tiff, she has been amazing and welcoming
Thank you for your review, we're glad that you've felt welcomed and supported by staff!
It’s been absolutely lovely living here, couldn’t imagine a better location, it is not only close to shops and restaurants, but also the nightlife and university. Maintenance requests are looked at swiftly and any queries are met as quickly as possible by the staff in charge. Would highly recommend living here for students applying in Sheffield.
Thank you for your review, we're glad you enjoy the property's facilities and would recommend us to friends!
Nice accommodation good price for facility, staff are very friendly and helpful, really good location
Thank you for your review, we're glad you enjoy the property's facilities.
Amazing location, perfect for walking to uni and close to many bars/pubs. Friendly staff Very strong wifi Clean property upon arrival
Thank you for your review, we're glad you enjoy the property's facilities and felt welcomed by staff!
Great accommodation with very helpful and kind staff. Spacious accommodation with nice bedrooms and kitchen. I liked where I have lived for first year and will definitely recommend it to friends in the future!!
Thank you for your review, we're glad you enjoy the property's facilities and felt welcomed by staff!
Personally the office is closed all the time and I think that it’s not good because anything can happen and it’s always shut .. when you want it to be open the staff are not that friendly about the questions . Some staff members are really nice and seem to enjoy their job but others not so much.
Such an ideal location, living near the moor, west street, university, everything is in reach and walking distance. We have 2 tescos less than 5 min walk away. Such a great price for the space and room you get, I hear very little from my roommates due to quite soundproof walls and doors. Maintenance arrive and solve issues quickly and reception is always willing to help and host events such as a meditation, free doughnuts and pancakes throughout the year and a valentines craft event. The common room is good for studying and have comfortable seats. Being so close to West Street and Division Street means that I have lots of places I can hang out with my friends. Having the Devonshire green right outside is also a bonus for hanging out and having picnics with friends when it gets warmer. WiFi and internet is always very quick and very rarely ever goes down and if so for an hour at most. I would 100% recommend living here, proven by the fact I decided to live here next year as well.
Thank you for leaving us a review, we're glad that you've enjoyed staying with us during your studies.
All positive experiences so far. The staff are lovely and really helpful. Overall, no complaints.
Thank you for leaving us a review, we're glad that you've enjoyed staying with us during your studies.
though it’s quite a simple and old accommodation, it’s very good value for money with a perfect location for night life, distance to uni and the other amenities! the staff are very very nice and always accomodating.
Thank you for leaving us a review, we're glad that you've enjoyed staying with us!
Location, Location, Location. Westhill hall sits right below the two best streets known to Sheffield. Here lays the premier night out on west street that attracts hundreds of students wanting to tick off each club at a time. With this 2 minute walk to all the best clubs brings an efficient pre drinks with all your flat mates and mates in the surrounding blocks. Getting home has never been so easy. But before the sun goes down , all the mellow indie students will walk to the street of Devonshire in search of the best thrift shops , pubs and restaurants. This vibrant location really HAS IT ALL. Let’s talk money. Westhill hall is one of the cheapest selections compared to all accommodation Sheffield Hallam provides. The cost of rent at westhill leaves a considerate amount of money for you to emerge yourself into the Sheffield culture. Going to other accommodations in Sheffield makes me conclude I have stuck with hood with better facilities , better location and a lot less pay.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Westhill Hall is only 10 minutes away form the centre and is so close to University buildings, it's a great space to live! Our wonderful housekeeping and maintenance team keep the site looking lovely and the reception staff are always happy to help with any issues you may have :) We have a student safety team on site from 10pm-7am so there is always a member of staff on hand to help out! With all bills included and spacious rooms it's a great deal!
Westhill Hall is centrally located to both universities in the city which makes it easy for walking to and from lectures. The rooms are spacious, clean and well maintained. The common room is well equipped with a pool table, board games, tvs, games consoles, a cinema room and a study area. The common room is great for hanging out with friends and the accomodation run great events in there. I’ve made lots of friends around the building and it’s a fab building to have a great social life. The staff are always so lovely and make it feel like a safe space to live in. Reception has great opening hours so when I need a parcel I can collect it when it suits me. There is always someone on site so I don’t have to worry about being locked out or having any issues in my flat. Overall a great place to live and would highly recommend!!
Thank you for leaving us a review, we're glad that you've enjoyed staying with us during your studies.
I stayed here for my second year because I enjoyed my first year so much. The staff are really helpful and it is located right in the city centre, which is useful for uni, shops and nights out.
Thank you for leaving us a review, we're glad that you've enjoyed staying with us during your studies.
Westhill halls in Sheffield is the perfect location being located right in the city centre and so close to town, it’s a short walk away from Monday shops. It’s great value for money, cheapest accommodation I’ve found around the area for students. The staff are very helpful and always available via the app if you need them. The maintenance team is always on hand and very friendly. I’ve never had any problems here and would definitely recommend to a friend. We have a spacious kitchen and lounge area between 4 of us and we don’t feel cramped at all. The team put on lots of activities so it’s easy to meet friends and bond with the people you’re living with.
Very nice place to stay with a park near by.
Thank you for leaving us a review, we're glad that you've enjoyed staying with us!
yeah it’s mint. love it here. room is massive too so don’t really have any major complaints.
Westhill is right in the city centre, but doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. There’s a quiet spot to go and study, if anything I think the study spot could be a bigger.
I started uni in September and this accommodation was my first choice for good reason! After speaking to my friends, it is significantly cheaper than places around Sheffield with bigger rooms and bathrooms. I often bump into employees hoovering the stairs to keep the place tidy! Any issues we’ve had in our flat have immediately been investigated and dealt with by the staff which is reassuring to know the help is there for any issues. Being so close to both campuses and the city centre, the location is absolutely perfect, and great when it comes to socialising as it’s near many pubs and restaurants. The common room is a lovely space to chat to others, watch a movie or even sit down to crack on with assignments. The staff are welcoming, warm and helpful, and I’ve met some lovely people just by living there for a couple of months so far! I couldn’t recommend Westhill hall any more, it really is everything a university study could ask for and more!
Westhill hall is great, especially for the money! It’s a lot cheaper than many of the others in Sheffield with all of the same amenities and perfect location. It’s only a 10 minute walk to Hallam university and just down the from some of the best pubs, bars and clubs on west street. Maintenance is always quick to fix any problems reported and the staff at reception are always friendly. After staying here for first year my friends and I have all decided to stay for another year after only having positive experiences at Westhill.
A great, affordable accommodation in a great location. Staff are friendly and happy to help. Rooms are comfortable with a large desk, lots of storage and good quality bed. Some minor issues but nothing major, for example a missing foot rest on one of the kitchen stools or broken switch on radiator so has to be turned on and off at the wall. One time the power shut off for my flat. Me and a flatmate went down to reception and a member of staff came back up with us immediately. She fixed the issue in around five minutes and was very friendly and sociable too.
Great value for money, nicely sized rooms and communal areas, good social opportunities and flatmates are lovely
Very much appreciative of the price of my accomodation fairly cheap but all the amenities Id need, super friendly neighbours and staff, fab central location and a good number of people per flat.
Great location and value for money
Amazing location in Sheffield, easily walkable to both Collegiate and City Campus. A lovely space to live with amazing staff, brilliant social spaces and fabulous kitchen spaces within the flats. The rooms are perfect sizes and so easy to make use of the space you are given
Westhill is in an amazing location i have met my friends for life and it has always been a very good room and flat.
How wonderful! We love running events so students can get to know others on site and the kitchen/living room is a great place to socialise! We also have study pods which is great for revising together and a cinema room to relax in!
Moving to uni was always a big anxiety for me (especially accomodation!) but ever since moving into Westhill hall they have been so accomodating to me. I had an issue with a fellow flatmate, this was dealt with quickly, effectively and discreetly by the staff in my building. The building is always on top of their maintenance requests and have always been there to help. the reception team are impeccable, always so friendly and always there to have a chat, they always make me feel comfortable and like I have people I can trust if I ever should need help. things such as team building and mental health are promoted within my building by the use of different sessions each month e.g. craft activities and mediation. westhill hall is definitely my home away from home and would recommend it to anyone thinking of going into student halls.
Could not recommend a better student residence for anyone despite the low cost. Situated in the perfect location in Sheffield for every aspect, between the two universities, supermarkets, restaurants, nightlife. Reception staff attentive and always as helpful as possible, on hand all hours of the day. They go out of their way to plan events for residents considering all backgrounds such as Chinese New Year and Shrive Tuesday. Frequent cleaning and checks performed by hardworking friendly staff. Any problems I have had such as noise complaints and small problems in the room were dealt with the same day and this is easily tracked using the app. Lots of room and activities available in the common room which is always clean and tidy. WiFi is fast, reliable and I have personally never had any problems whatsoever. The perfect accommodation for any student in Sheffield.
I have had such an amazing experience at Westhill Hall so far, so glad I chose to live here! It’s in a great central location, around a 5/10 minute walk to both universities, with so many shops/ fun things to do right on your doorstep. For the location the price is such a bargain! The staff are all so friendly, I moved to Sheffield half way through the year so I was taking over someone else’s tenancy but they ensured everything ran smoothly and I felt very well looked after. There’s a great sense of community here and everyone is very considerate of other students, it’s never too loud and all the communal spaces are kept really clean and tidy. There are always lots of events on too - most recently the free pancake breakfast on pancake day and the Valentines craft event was so fun. Westhill hall will be the first place I recommend to new students looking for a place to stay in Sheffield!
Last year, I was on my laptop, constantly searching for a new house that is near to class, asian stores and city centre. Each house that I found was either expensive or has a complicated contract. I was in the verge of giving up and just settle down in my previous accom which was a bit inconvenient in the sense of distance from uni, until I found out about Westhill Hall. I checked for availability and to my convenience, Westhill Hall filled all the criteria I listed previously. Henceforth, signing up Unite Students contract was the best decision I’ve made in that moment. I, now live with 2 of my best friends and Westhill Hall is decent and accommodating :)
Very convenient location, friendly staff
It is the perfect location for being in town. The price point is very good for what you get and the facilities are grate for socialising. It is lovely that you are able to book with friends and share a flat also that it's offered not only for 1st year students.
I would definitely recommend Westhill Hall, moving away from home can be a scary experience but staying at this accommodation made it easier. It’s near the town centre and it’s a good walking distance to the shops and both Sheffield Hallam Uni campuses. Flatmates are all really friendly as well as others in the building. It’s clean and management is really helpful aswell.
Overall very happy with the property, got added into a flat with people with the same degree area as me which is helpful if any of us are struggling
Very good location, reasonable pricing, helpful and friendly staff
It's a fab accommodation, receptionist are really friendly.
Clean, safe halls and a nice sense of community
Great for the money very helpful staff
Good life, near uni, near tesco
The only things is they don’t have the lift other than that everything is top notch
Very good area and cheap for where it is but reception isn’t open enough and when things break it takes a long time for them to get fixed.
Location is better then previous accomodation but ive had more issues here. Staff can sometimes be rude, sometimes refused to accept their mistakes, need to stick office hours usually office is closed when it should be open. the pricing for the accomodation is expensive but your practically paying for the location. Internet is amazing had no issues with it I wouldnt really reccomend it unless you like living closer to places.
Westhill isn't perfect. The beds aren't that comfortable, the walls are thin and there is a lot of bars around so it can get loud. However, considering how it's a pretty low weekly rent, I'd say Westhill is great value for money, particularly when there is much worse accommodations which are more expensive. Plus the location is great for pretty much all uni campuses with West Street and Corp also being really close for the nightlife ! The staff are friendly too ! I gotta give a special mention to Tammy, during the Christmas break she sent an email offering to have a chat with anyone staying at Westhill during the holidays and even gave tips for how they could spend their time. Fortunately for me I went back home for Christmas, but I know many people who had to stay in Sheffield so I know how it can be quite a lonely time so big credit for Tammy for going above and beyond !
I've lived here for over a year now. The past few months have been the worst experience and I wish I'd never rebooked. The previous manager Callum made was great and did everything for us andwas so helpful. He is missed because the current staff and management are rude and disinterested in us students. If I could move out I would. The only good thing is the cleaners who work very hard. AVOID Unite Students Sheffield!!!!
I stayed here 2022-2023. MY BIKE WAS STOLEN AND SECURITY WAS PATHETIC. On arrival my room and kitchen were very dirty and some of our equipment was unfit for use. Ongoing issue with an extreme silverfish infestation in my bathroom and they have spread into my bedroom and the kitchen on occasion, this issue has been ignored. I arrived with my shower caked in mould and rather than do something long lasting about it, maintenence only scraped what was visible off. The paint on the ceiling of my bathroom is peeling away as well as also being covered in mould. The ventilation in my room and the kitchen is horrific. Some of the radiators have unconnected timers in them so will be clicking non stop whilst they are on loudly. The laundry prices are awful, I am having to pay £5.10 weekly. The payment system through app has also seen a high amount of issues. Noise maintenance not sufficient at all. Front staff are nice but it is understaffed. I can't fit all of the places problems in this review!
I really enjoyed staying at Westhill hence why I will be staying next year its a great accommodation and great location the staff are great (Dan,Dulcie,Lily and Tammie) they are always there when need help weather it's maintenance or personal issues, thank you Westhill highly would recommend.
Honestly the rooms themselves are fine and the kitchen area is okay . But there is a huge issue regarding washing and maintenance . If you have any form of noise issues expect nothing to be done regarding this other than a small chat which resolves nothing . Since being here I can count the good nights sleeps I have had on one hand due to issues regarding a flat mate they haven’t resolved and when an opportunity arrived to move into a different flat to resolve this they sold it off leaving me and the rest of my flat to deal with this issue . Aswel as this the washing machines are terrible , it’s lucky if you ever get a load done !! Rats are riddled everywhere and your key cards don’t always work on all the gates or even reception leaving you to very little access to places. Honestly a terrible stay. But if you want a cheap accommodation with decent room size then that’s all you’re going to get.
A very convenient place to say, good location and good services. It has nice entertainment facilities and good wifi
Brilliant people, brilliant area, Scarlett, Callum and all the other staff are amazing. House keepers Stella and Wayne brilliant people and always a good laugh when you see them. The big courtyard alls people to talk to others and create a brilliant environment within westhill. The social areas such as the common room are an amazing place for people to chill and hang out with each other. This is my second year here and I would fully consider living here for a 3rd if I wasn’t on placement. For the 2 years I’ve lived here I’ve loved every minute of it everything about westhill is amazing… especially how close you are to all the clubs as a uni student.
The accommodation has an excellent positive vibe. People over here are chill. Overall a pleasant experience.
I’ve really enjoyed staying here this year. It’s a great value for money and all the staff are really friendly and helpful. Glad to be staying here again next academic year. Callum and Tammie have especially been great this year.
Loved my experience here, everyone has been really nice and close to the centre
Great place to live if you want to have a full Uni experience. The location is perfect. You are in the middle of everything, which makes it easy to move around. The rooms are decent, however, they could be modernized a bit.
Thank you for your lovely review! We would definitely agree that Westhill Hall is in a great location and provides our students with an amazing university experience.
The place is falling apart. There are more rats than people and I’m pretty sure they are in my walls. The maintenance is slow and sometimes doesn’t even turn up. The laundry doesn’t work and costs a lot more than any other accommodation. The only reason I haven’t left is because it’s not worth it as I’m moving out of this s****** in the next couple months anyway.
Best place to stay with a lot of amazing qualities

We do currently have a larger ratio of Sheffield Hallam students living with us, but we do aim to treat everybody equally regardless of university. Very fun overall. It's been a great accommodation for social experiences. In terms of utilities, a lot of the stove tops and washing machines are outdated and regularly break.
Hello and thanks for leaving a review! I'm glad you've had such a good social experience here at Westhill Hall. We have some great social spaces which are free to use 24/7 and throw regular events for all residents and it sounds like you've been taking advantage of these which is brilliant! premium room is very big and spacious for the price i’m paying currently. Accommodation is nearby both uni and nearby a lot of food places and city centre. Only downside is the fridge is too small.
Thank you for your review! We love our Premium rooms - there's so much room for activities!
Always have friendly staff in reception who are happy to help with any queries or issues, regular updates done to the rooms too!

Westhill is great value for money and is located in a great part of Sheffield for student life. The facilities are well maintained and the receptionist are always willing to help.
Many thanks for your good review - we agree Westhill Hall is in a great location for student life, conveniently located for a range of retailers, bars and restarants as well as being within walking distance of both universities - what more could you ask for! The reception team are always happy to help and will be happy to hear your comments.
My experience at westhill has been great, any of the rare issues i’ve had within the flat have been seen to and resolved within a couple of days. Members of staff at the reception are super polite and always happy to help. The accommodation it’s self is ideal and very cheap in comparison to other accommodations in sheffield. We are updated constantly on any events, if maintenance will need access to our rooms etc. I have no complaints.
Thanks for your brilliant review! We're very happy to hear that, on the rare occasion that you've had issues, our team has responsed quickly and helped you out! Our team here are always willing and happy to help with the aim of providing you with the best experience possible whilst you live with us - I'm happy to see they've succeeded with you and will pass on your great comments.
Incredible place to live. Unfortunate that there isn’t enough staff to keep reception open all the time which is a requirement. Due to this parcels get returned and then refunded or lost :(
Thank you for yuor review - I'm sorry to hear you've had some trouble here. We will take your comments on board and use these to improve in the future. If you would like to discuss this issue further please pop down to reception or drop us an email on Sheffield@unitestudents.com and we'll be happy to help!
I have had such an amazing time here. I strongly recommend for anyone who wants to stay here while studying. You wont have to worry about solving issues when you are trying to rush to classes in the morning. Their 24/7 support is there to help you out and support you at any point in time that you need it.
Thank you for leaving a great review, our team are available 24/7 so there's always someone here to help, no matter what time of day! I hope you've enjoyed your year with us so far
The place has friendly staff who are helpful when you need them. I never use the social area but it looks great for those who like to socialise, as well as those who would like to study. My room is a good size, I have brought a lot of things from back home and still have ample space. There were some faults when I arrived, like my toilet seat being broken but that was quickly sorted when reported to the maintenance staff. The pantry is quite spacious and there is always a free washing machine available so I am never struggling to wash my clothes. Circuit washing systems can be quite problematic and I understand it isn’t their system but the staff were quick to help me when I had issues, they offered me a payment card which resolved my issues and I no longer have problems with circuit. Overall a good place to live, 5 minutes away from the city centre, 5 minutes away from a street full of bars and places to eat.. Tammie is always helpful towards me when I attend the reception.
Thank you for leaving such an in depth review. I'm sorry to hear that there were some faults when you checked in here, but I'm very happy to hear that these were quickly resolved by the team who are always happy to help no matter what!
It's definitely an amazing deal. Direct centre of chef field city. A decent common room, apart from when other students break stuff or steal stuff (I.e. the pool balls) but all in all. I feel like i DEFINITELY made the best choice about where to move into
It has been a great experience overall, the rooms are comfortable and spacious, and the common room provides a lot of options to socialise with people. Most grievances are resolved promptly by the reception and maintenance team. The reception team is really friendly, especially Tammie and Lily, who are always warm, kind and will more often than not provide you with a solution to your problem! The location of the accommodation is great as well as it's equidistant from both campuses of Sheffield Hallam University, and close to the City centre and West Street as well! I'll definitely recommend staying here!
Thank you for your good review! It's great news that you'd recommend staying here. Our team are always working hard to provide a kind, welcoming atmosphere, it's brilliant that they are able to help you to find solutions for you.
An accommodation that is cheap and affordable, and includes many perks due to its fantastic location. Perfect for students that enjoy going to bars and clubs and want to have a short and safe journey home. Not only does the app allow good communication between yourself and staff, but at reception you get a lovely smile and quick service, Callum and Tammie will go out of their way to sort out any issues as quick as possible!
Thank you for leaving us a review! We're glad you're enjoying the MyUnite App, this is a great service we provide with lots of uses so it's great you're taking advantage of it. Callum and Tammie are always smiling, they'll be happy to hear that they've been so helpful to you.
Great Value for money and perfect city centre location. Good size room and all en suites which is great for £99pw. Loads of room in the social areas, and friendly reception staff, especially Callum.
Thanks for your great review. We're glad to hear that you're happy with the prices of our rooms and our social spaces. Our staff work hard to promote a friendly and welcoming atmosphere - Callum will be happy to hear your comments.
I’ve stayed at Westhill Hall for 2 years now and will continue to do so for year 3! It’s in a perfect location and everything you need is close by! The staff at Westhill are also super friendly too!
Thanks for your brilliant review! Wow, how amazing that you've stayed with us for 2 years - we're thrilled to see you've rebooked with us for year 3! I hope we can continue to provide you with a great experience.
Really nice and well kept accomodation. There’s always things to do. The front desk ensure to promote many activities for the students which is a great way to get all of us to socialise and meet new people.
Thanks for your review. I'm glad to see that the hardwork of our housekeeping team has paid off and contributied to your positive expeirence whilst staying with us. I hope you've enjoyed all of the social events we have had - if you have any suggestions feel free to pop down to reception!
A very affordable accommodation nestled right in the city centre with close proximity to both Sheffield Hallam campuses, bars, pubs, cinema, supermarket and so much more. The staff at this accommodation are very friendly and the maintenance team responds speedily to maintenance requests. Wish I could stay here forever! Shout out to Tammie Beech at reception, she is so cool and easy to get along with!
I'm glad to hear that you've had such a great time living here and that Tammie is so approacable - she'll be thrilled to have been left such a lovely comment. We wish you could stay forever as well! We hope you enjoy the rest of your stay here at Westhill Hall
When I needed some information I spoke to a member of staff called Callum who was great and helped me out. He made me feel better about talking to the staff as a staff member who I think has now left made me feel nervous about it.
Thank you for your review! I'm sorry to hear that previous team members made you feel uncomfortable, but I'm happy that this has been turned around by the current team. Callum and the current team aim to provide an immaculate level of service and we're glad that you're reaping the benefits of this.
My stay in west hill hall was amazing. Quite near to university, quite amazing staff, best place to spend time outside as we have a huge spacious park.
Thank you for a lovely review - Westhill Hall is a great place to live if you love the outdoors - with Devonshire Green just outside you can spend time in nature whilst also taking in what Sheffield City Centre has to offer
brilliant place to stay, very friendly
Thanks for leaving a review! I'm happy to hear that you've received a friendly welcome here! We aim to makeeverybody feel welcome at Westhill Hall
Location wise it's the most convenient place to live in the city center.
Thanks for your review - We're glad you're happy with the location - great for students who love a bit of everything!
I have a had a great time here in westhill hall as an international student, Lily and Tammie have made it more welcome for me by prompt response to issues .
Thanks for your review - We're so happy that you chose to live at Westhill Hall when you came to the UK. Lily and Tammie will be overjoyed to see your comment as they work so hard to make everyobdy feel welcome and listened to.
Westhill hall is a fantastic university accommodation! The best part is the room size, for the price you get a large amount of space and lots of desk room. The staff at reception are lovely and it is very easy to make friends here. Great year so far would recommend.
Thank you for leaving us a great review. The size of our rooms is definitely a huge bonus! There's so much room for storage and the large desks allow you plenty of room to study, store university work or pictures of friends and family! The reception team will be happy to hear your comments - I'll be sure to pass them on!
Very good value. Location is perfect for the uni and bars and pubs etc
Thanks for your review! We agree - it is a great location for bars and pubs - with West Street just around the corner you couldn't ask for a better location! Make sure to pick up your Free Gold Card from reception as there's loads of discounts for different bars and other retailers in the area just for you!
Great accomodation. Maintenance issues are sorted out within a short period of time. Front desk creates activities in order to get the students to socialise with each other and find new friends. This is great as I de-stress students from Uni pressure. They don’t have to go out as these activities are held in the common room. In the common room there are various things to do other than study. And students can entertain themselves
Thanks for your great review - I'm really happy to see that you've had such a great experience whilst living with us. We believe that the social aspect of student life is highly imporant and so we regularly throw events and ensure our common room has loads to offer to enable you to socialise and make new friends. I'm glad to hear this has helped you to de-stress from pressure at university! I hope you enjoy the rest of your stay at Westhill Hall
Amazing customer service and support. The common area is always clean and the staff always ready to help. The overall experience was amazing
Thanks for leaving such a positive review! I'm glad you're happy with the level of customer service you have received here at Westhill Hall. The housekeeping team work tirelessly to ensure that the entire building is kept clean and well presented at all times so they'll be very happy to hear that they have contributed to your positive overall experience.
At around 100 pw you can't really do better in sheffield. The location is great for a social life and you're also in between both sheffield hallam campuses which is amazing, it's just a little trek to the train station. Property management seems to be on point from my point of view, maintenance response is faster than my old accommodation. The common room is much better than the ones I've been to be in sheffield, and it helps that there is multiple tvs, a vending machine and a cinema room, wish there was a ps5 in the common room though. The social experience is great but that's more because of the people that have won their lottery to live with me. During the first half of the school year the WiFi was really spotty however since January I had 0 problems with it. Can't go better for than westhill for this price.
Hello and thank you for leaving such an awesome review! We're thrilled that you're so happy with your stay at Westhill Hall and are finding the property management to be so good. We're proud of our brilliant social spaces and are constantly looking for ways we can improve or things we could implement to make your experience better and so we'll definitely take your comments on board! I'm very happy to hear that you've had such a great social experience and have been reaping the benefits of everything we have to offer here as well as our brilliant location!
Receptionist Callum went above and beyond to help me when i was locked out of my room at late hours
Thanks for leaving a great review - one of the benefits of living with us is that we have no lock-out fees and there is always a member of staff onsite 24/7 so you never need to worry about being locked out of your room! Callum will be happy to hear that you were impressed with the level of service you received.
Tammy, Dulcie and Faduma have helped me get my voucher when I had issues.
Thank you for your review and for shouting out about three of our lovely team members! They'll be thrilled to hear your comments - I'm glad they were able to help you.
I have loved every second of living here. The staff are lovely and always make me feel welcome. Scarlet always is happy to see students in reception and helps and listens with any problems. The house keeping Wayne and Stella are always helping out and jobs get done when logged. I am staying for a second year because I love it that much! Definitely recommend staying here the location is great, close to everything and I always feel safe when being here.
Thank-you for such a great review of Westhill Hall! Our team work super hard to create a welcoming and friendly enviroment for all our students so they feel at home. They will be very happy to hear such lovely feedback. We can't wait to welcome you back for your second year!
We are blessed to have absolutely amazing receptionists - Scarlet & Lily, whenever I have had problems with my accommodation they have sorted it out straight away! Every unite accommodation needs a Scarlet and Lily
We are so glad to hear that you are enjoying your stay with us and the team have been great! We always aim to create a friendly and welcoming environment for all our students.
I really enjoyed my stay here, had a good size room and sociable flatmates, friendly staff, nice location, walk-able distance to most places, green space outside. However, my eczema did flare up from late first semester, could have been from lack of washing machines (6).
Honestly loved it here my flatmates were all really nice and there was just a nice ablmlunt of space for all of us. Furthermore the internet was great and the location was so convinient for literally everything uni shopping and accessing transport routes.
We stayed here last year, we had such an amazing time and made so many memories in our flat Pros Location (AMAZING - can walk everywhere and equal distance to both campuses) Rooms (DESK - long and spacious Living Room (good storage and cosy) Social area ( Amazing and modern) However half way through the year they started to lock it and then no one ever went in :( Parking next door - moderate prices but not for someone visiting frequently Con Washing (SO EXPENSIVE - but the same at every halls) Car Park - no one used it and way to expense for parking space - should be free Water - in our flat we had a problem where we had hot water that burnt us when we complain they just turned it off for 3 months and gave no compensation - does not apply to shower as electrical only taps in bathroom and kitchen DEPOSIT - we knew 6 people that all got charged with "marks on out beds" even with video proof of no marks because they did the inspection without us present - charged £120 we <3 LB tho x
Was good all round but got interrupted with building works and wasn't notified about it. And the price was too high for what it was.
Really enjoyed staying here. I loved here with international students and they were all really friendly and great to live with. The place is all together great ,great location main areas are always kept clean. Only complaint is it is a busy location so it can be quiet load especially at night. Also walls were very thin which wasn't too bad for me as my flatmates were quiet.
Class - in town close to clubs - great for 1st year socialising and partying
I loved living here this year and have a room booked here for my 2nd year at hallam too! Great location: near to the main bar strip in Sheffield for nights out (West Street). Also, it’s 2 minutes from Tesco/KFC/Subway/Dominoes and 5 minutes from the Moor Market and high street. Each campus is a 10-15 minute walk max too. The rooms are a good size and you get a en-suite too so don’t need to worry about sharing a bathroom. The kitchens are also modern and I didn’t struggle for cupboard space. There’s a TV which my flatmate linked his Apple TV box to, so we always have movie nights. :) It’s also a very sociable and friendly hall. The staff set up a Facebook group initially for us to find our flatmates before we moved in on freshers week but also to update us on any events they run ( cake, sweets and chocolate available in the office to celebrate days e.g Halloween / Christmas themed)
I’ve been here for my first year and I’ve loved every second of it. The location is the best part in my opinion. You’re close to all the clubs and bars (but not too close that it’s really loud). West street is a 2 minute walk and the moor and moor market are a 4 min walk away. Additionally you’re soooo close to town and a 10 min walk away from uni. Just the best location ! It is a very sociable hall, so if you’re not a social person, then this is not the place for you. The management and on site team are lovely, and there’s a security guard on site 24/7- who I’ve seen help many drunk people multiple times. The bathrooms are very small. They’re tiny but you get used to it. The only downside is the noise. My room backs onto Devonshire lane which is an ‘alley way’ that constantly has people walking through it, which can be noisy at night sometimes. A bar and restaurant also back onto the lane and they can be quite loud during close. But I’d still pick liberty again, loved it here
Don't be fooled by big rooms and amazing location. Staff aren't keen to help and can be intrusive with the managers and maintenance letting themselves in to the flats whenever they want. Really boring atmosphere overall in liberty hall not very much going on at all so doesn't really matter that the walls are paper thin and the kitchens are set out in an unsociable way, with all the seats facing one way. The quality of the fittings and furniture in the flats is much lower than most of the other halls I have visited in Sheffield, theres not enough storage space in the kitchen or the bedrooms and I shared one small fridge with 4 people. Spotted mice around the flats a few times and always near the outside bins. Overall not at all what I thought my halls experience would be, i didn't expect to be living in luxury but I did think it would at least be fun and entertaining but all i can think is boring. Can't wait to move into a house next year
The location is great and so are my flatmates. However, I’m very disappointed. When I moved in, my bathroom had mould in several spots (maybe the reason I’ve been ill a lot while living here). And there are cracks on the walls and every week there are bugs crawling out of them in my bedroom. I clean my flat literally all the time, there’s nothing I could do to prevent these problems. I find it quite unfair that Liberty Hall is the only Hallam accommodation that us Erasmus students can have while my English friends live in new, clean, bugless halls. The staff is super nice though!
Good halls, easy reach of the uni
Best halls by far, costwise, it’s unbelievable, I love living in this area of Sheffield and will be sad to leave when I go private next year
The hall is a good place to study or review work, chat with friends and get some food.
My room is a double room which I pay £15 more per week for, however the room itself is smaller than all the other rooms available. Feel very ripped off by this. I have openly heard the hall management saying that they “hate students” and as such they email us almost weekly introducing new rules that would not exist in any other student accommodation on the planet. The internet access is taken down for maintenance almost 2 times every week, which when working on assignments is very disruptive. When I signed my contract we were promised a flat TV license (we were told this only covered the TV provided and not any laptops or personal TV’s) and a cleaner for the shared spaces, neither of these have been provided and I have not had a response from Liberty Living, only a very rude email from the halls manager almost telling me to get lost with my complaints. Would not recommend this Hall to any students, Hallam is an amazing uni it’s just a shame that Liberty Living aren’t.
Great location, with great WiFi and common room
First year living it liberty. Has its ups and downs. The location is utterly perfect. But for the first week we had no oven between 5. It was 'next day delivered' on the sat we moved in. We expected a tues delievery. But it wasnt installed till friday. In additon our fridge broke ("due to age") the following week. Replaced in 4 days. Furthermore a wash is £2.80, not libertys fauly but coin machines or them looking at alternatives would be nicer. The reception staff are amazing & super helpful. Depends on block placement for rooms sizing. Being in a corner block our kitchen is massive ( as shown on open days) however the others are tiny and have seen plenty having 3/4 bar stools but 5 people in the flat making it near impossible to eat together. The veiws onto devs green are amazing. However its a huge eye opener & most nights tne returning students or homeless are loud so god help thr summer months when i will want the window open! Would deffo live here for the price you pay!
Disclaimer: If not for the incidents of this year I would rate 5/5 on for the two years I have lived in these halls however for transparency I feel it's only fair to inform prospective tenants of my experience. At the beginning of this academic year, just one week before we were due to move in, we received an email saying that during the year refurb of all flats would be taking place. This would mean at any time we would be asked to move out all of our things into a different room - lets not downplay the enormity of that task. On top of this, evidently, there would be construction noise throughout the year. I don't know if I'm being sensitive but it seems a bit deceptive to only inform student once their contract is in place and money has been taken. Update - this did not happen in the end due to one of the flats in the halls giving out static shock through the en suite taps/water for over a month. My guess is the refurb is for next year now but funnily enough they don't know yet.
As a second year this was my 2nd year in halls and I wouldn't be fooled by the location of this halls. The location is perfect being minutes from everything. However, it is much in need of referb the bathroom is tiny with just about enough space, rooms are decently sized yet do not compare with that of unite students. The kitchen is the best part of the flat however even this is small in comparison to other halls. To make the halls experience even better we were constantly surrounded by the sound of workmen and disruption to our lives with drills and other work happening almost every day. On moving in i was also surprised to find my room not up to my own standards of cleanliness resulting in me cleaning the whole of my new flat before using anything. The staff were nice and approachable which made the experience slightly better.
Decent for the price, however the location and thin walls means you can hear everyone going to/coming from a night out (they love to shout.) Maintainance let themselves in whenever they want and will take as long as they like when you need something fixed (It took 2 weeks to fix my extractor fan) They were carrying out construction throughout the year so there was plenty of loud noise throughout the day and this also left the stairwells filthy. Common room is very good, plenty of things to do. Social experience is perfect if you like to go out a lot, you save a lot of money as you don’t need to pay for a taxi. The internet is very good if you connect with an Ethernet cable, however if you connect over WiFi you’ll often have random cut outs and extremely slow speeds throughout the day/night which is insanely annoying. Overall I’d give it 2 stars.
Seasoned parent and know good accomodation when I see it. The rooms are good but what makes these flats are the HUGE lounge kitchen diner . A fab social space. It's in a great location no need for taxis home after a night out.
Location is f****** mint - up the road from corp, down the road from west street. Two minutes away from Subway, Taco Bell, KFC, Dominoes, etc. 10/15 minutes away from both campuses and train station. Kitchens and rooms are rather big and clean, en-suites are great. New common room with xbox one and PS4, snooker table, etc. Been a great first year here.
Changed it's name to Liberty Hall/Union State, don't know why it's just confusing everyone. Seems like the best accommodation for first years.
If you get landed with good flat mates; Garuntee this will be the best year of your life. If you get landed with a bad flat mate, like me.. it's hell. If you're a light sleeper you won't get any sleep... The walls are paper thin, and if you have respectful flat mates then it's a great halls to live in, however I was placed next to a person who stays up until 3am every morning in his room making lots of noise. The halls has terrible staff in my opinion, they are inconsistent with solutions to problems and would refuse to relocate me in another flat that was free and would not sort out the issue with my loud flat mate. He internet is temprinental and not very good wirelessley but is good wired. Would never stay here again, as it's a good place to party but not to live, especially once getting to your exams and coursework deadlines.
Great location in terms of area, rooms are nice and the flat itself is modern and great, the downside this is not the place to come if you aren't the best at sleeping not donut enjoy noise, it's constantly loud from 7pm and through till 3am, you can hear every footstep above you and every door being slammed throughout the block, not to mention the walls are dead thin. I can literally hear conversations my flat mate is having which I think it's terrible. Also a lot of noise from people after a night out. Overall it's great but the noise has annoyed me to the point of wanting to leave.
great halls, unreasonable staff
A great place to be if you're really into partying as the location is fab. However it is extremely loud and the walls aren't very thick so if you're wanting quiet nights I would probably go else where. Overall it is a lovely place though and would recommend.
Lovely, modern flat. Living in a mixed flat where there's 2 girls and 2 boys. There's 8 flats in our block that we mostly talk to, great distance to Corp (on the doorstep) and west street/Carver street (literally two minutes walk) no need for public transport anywhere..such a good location. Security arent as strict as I thought but yet they're there if you need them. Had problems with my room and all was fixed the same day!
The value is great with en suits from only £95, security is good but not too strict and there are always flat parties however not too late on. It is a perfect distance from everything, Never have to walk more than 15 minutes to get anywhere.
really nice place great location and great spaces especially living room/ kitchen, for me only downside is that the wifi is a bit dodgy in my room but everywhere else it is good
Terrible management, lost packages/deposits
It's a great accommodation, and I chose to live there for my second and third year at uni. It's in a great location for both city and collegiate campus.
The staff at Victoria Hall are very friendly. I always feel safe here and the atmosphere is great too!
Brilliant halls. As a first year student I felt safe and secure with the security guards.
bang in the centre of Sheffield, lovely place clean and tidy. Good size rooms and communal space allows social events. Staff are friendly
Horrible...thin walls, regular inspections although pay extortionate rent
No one socialises between flats....
It was very easy to make friends here in freshers as there was always a party going on somewhere. But just be aware that if you're too loud security will ask you to keep it down but they're usually fine if you're respectful and don't kick off with them. We've had many parties and just been told to keep the music down but never had any problems or been kicked out. Just don't have music too loud after like 12. The location is brilliant, one of the best for hallam. Close to all the nightlife. Like a minute to walk to corp, 5 mins to carver street and less than 10 minutes to plug/code. It takes less than 10 minutes to walk to uni at city campus and the train station. The halls are really nice compared to some of the ones my friends are staying in and they're paying more money! Also the caretakers really good at coming to fix anything that's broken or not working and it's usually done very quickly! Had the best first year living here!
Thank you for your review! We're so happy to hear you are enjoying your time with Unite Students! Our maintenance team are brillaint, they work 24/7 365 and reporting issues is really easy, you can either report it on the MyUnite app or tell reception which is open from 7am-10pm everyday. The location is great! Westhill Hall is really close to the centre of town and Univeristy buildings making it great for those 9am starts! The staff put on a varity of events and are always happy to take suggestions :)
