Merchant Studios Biography
Merchant Studios offers modern studio living for students in Glasgow in great proximity to both the University of Strathclyde and Glasgow Caledonian University. It was voted one of the Top 50 Best Value For Money in the StudentCrowd 2019 Awards.
When it comes to socialising with friends, Merchant Studios has fantastic communal spaces. There’s a spacious lounge with comfy seating and games, and a variety of fun events are hosted there throughout the year. When the weather is fine you can enjoy the outdoor courtyard, and when it's time to hit the books, you can make use of the quiet study room.
There are four different sizes of studios to choose from at Merchant Studios; Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum. All of the well-equipped rooms come with a private kitchen, bathroom and study desk. The light and airy studios come fully furnished with a double bed and plenty of storage.

All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

I’d like to share my experience with Merchant Studios to help others make an informed decision before booking. I had booked accommodation for the September intake and moved in from September 2024. Due to personal circumstances, I had to leave the UK and terminated my contract. Despite this, I ensured all dues were cleared up to my move-out date, deep cleaned the room, and received confirmation on January 22, 2025, that I was no longer liable for any further payments.However, on February 3, I was unexpectedly contacted and asked to pay additional charges, including rent up to the current date and cleaning fees—even though they have already found a new occupant. This is causing me significant mental stress, as they are now demanding over £1,000. Even after vacating, they seem to impose unfair charges and demand money. Don't live in this apartment. It has a serious bedbug problem, and the pest control company is extremely slow to respond. Even after they treated the room, the problem wasn't resolved. I still got bitten the next day. When I reported this issue again to the apartment staff, they said they would contact the pest control company again but implied that it was my fault for not following their guidance. I waited an entire day and emailed the apartment to ask if they'd received any response from the pest control company, but they completely ignored me. I don't understand why it's taking so long—it's been nearly a week, and I feel like I'm being driven to the edge by these bedbugs.

My time at the Merchant Studios residence – Student Roost – has been predominantly pleasant to date. While I have only been in residence for approximately two months, the service, aesthetic and student care available have been commendable. My first impression of the property was that it was welcoming and architecturally pleasing, with a sleek and towering block of buildings. Upon arrival, my registration and settling-in processes were efficient and seamless, and the orientation experience online was helpfully swift. I have found the studio in question to be clean, well appointed, compact and easily accessible, and my occasional requests for assistance, clarification or intervention have generally been met with courteous, helpful and genuine engagement. It’s a wonderful place to live like it’s close to the University of Strathclyde and to city centre as well. The staff is also very supportive and friendly you will get a lot of friends here. Had an amazing experience! Staff was available at all times and was friendly and kind to me. The facilities were always clean and all issues with any of the utilities was attended to in a timely fashion. Constant powercuts, even saw smoke coming out of the fuse room downstairs by the vending machine where the electricians went in to fix the power cut issues. The powercuts keep happening consistently and on consecutive days, from my understanding this is even becoming a fire hazard. If you want a reliable accomodation that will provide the basics DO NOT come to Merchant Studios.

Merchant studios has been amazing for me! I’ve stayed here for 3 years now and it’s so convenient as it’s right across the road from my campus and there are grocery stores right down the road for me! The staff are extremely considerate, understanding and have always been there whenever I’ve needed, especially Carole!!

I am staying here. This is the most amazing place to live in, as an international student I will highly recommend this place. It is clean, tidy and lively. On top of everything is the staff, they are friendly and supportive, whether it is related to accommodation or health. This place is like home away from home, people from different countries, alot of different cultures and experiences.

Really nice and clean inside. They have nice common rooms to hang out in and the gym is also really nice. It’s close to Strathclyde and City of Glasgow college which makes it easier for students who are staying here.

I’ve lived at Merchant Studios for a little more than 3 years now. It is a 2 minute walk to Uni of strathclyde and has a wide range of international students. There is a well furnished social space where we are able to go down to at any point to enjoy playing pool, use the tv as well as the gym. Along with this, there are many places to sit and study as well as meeting room for more privacy. The staff is wonderful and extremely helpful at any point during the day, with Carole and Connor on the night shift who have always been there no matter what! Overall, it is a wonderful place to stay - not only for the location, but the environment and friendly faces always available!!

Place is really quiet so you don't have to worry about noisy neighbours or it being like a party gaff, also the common areas and gym are very good and usually empty which makes them the perfect place to bring your friends too. Also the receptionists couldn't be any better they are always willing to help and sort any issue very quickly, really fast internet so happy I chose merchant studios.

Very good luck to be in one of the largest bronze room in Merchant Studios. Compared to the other bronzes, each floor Room 36 is undoubtly the biggest owing to its Silver liked room layout. I would thanks merchant studios who provides me with a Scotland home where I never feel away. I had my previous three months experiences in another property called Blackfriars, the bad memories with rats scrampering around a corner of the backyard with piles of garbage and group of Chinese roommates ludicrous daily drama，plus a Spanish girl‘s daily taking man backhome midnight live podcast…That was a nightmare…Luckly I’m out there，I feel I escape the hell and come to MS，this paradise… No. 1 gaurd and receiptants teams，best ever student accomodation quality with even an air condition. Spacious private space （see my room below）where you can give full play of immagination to decorate and design！！ Will be here as residents till the end of my other 2-years phd.

merchant studios is a great spot! I've lived here for about two years and it's in a great location next to a train station as well as the city center. There's also a recreational space under construction right now but it usually has study spaces, pool tables, and plenty of space to hang out.

I have been at the Merchant Studios for about 7 months now and I have not felt more at home than being here. Everyone has been so nice and friendly and the space is an absolute worth for the price you pay! I am quite close to the staff. especially Helena who is an absolute sweetheart and has been so supportive of my uni journey here whenever I needed someone to talk to or needed some help with. I'll narrate an incident that will demonstrate the commitment of the staff at helping the residents. I was hosting a dinner for around 11 people at a very short notice. Apparently studios are small for such gatherings and hence I required to use the common space in the basement which is under refurbishment. I went to Helena, asked her for help, she herself moved a study table for 6 to the common space in the reception area that we turned into a dining table!! I think that really shows Merchant's and her commitment towards their services. Thank you Helena. ❤️

Lived in our studio with my partner for two years and it was great. Such a lovely and easy-going staff who were understanding of the complications that the pandemic caused. Amazing location and even though it's right in the centre, the place was peaceful and always felt safe, and not forgetting all the good cafes and restaurants right next to us. Would definitely say that Merchant Studios is one of the best student accommodations in Glasgow!

The place is overall amazing. The staff is honestly the best. Everytime you enter and leave the building, there is someone greeting you with the biggest smile and kindest eyes. Furthermore, they make you feel at home, and for someone coming from a whole different country, I appreciate this so much. You can even go and chat with them, they literally give you the feeling that they are and will be always there for you if you need them. So yeah, LOVE them! The accommodation itself is beautiful, always clean, feels and looks like brand new, no comment on this. The social room is great as well, fully equipped with different types of games and books + a room for studying. My boyfriend and I really enjoyed spending time there after Uni to relax. The studio's heating was amazing, 11/10!!! The only thing I wish it had is a small oven, a kettle and more kitchen equipment in general, that would be great as it is quite a price for such small studio. Overall, a favorite place to live in Glasgow!

I’ve been living in Merchant Studios a little over 8 months now and loving my stay. Having had to spend almost all of my time in the accommodation due to the ongoing pandemic and lockdowns, I am glad I chose this place not only because of the close proximity to amenities but also because of the staff. Everyone one I met have been extremely friendly and helpful and they make you feel right at home. The rooms have massive windows which I absolutely love as I am a sucker for natural light and if you get a room at a higher floor, you get an amazing view of sunrise/sunset. All in all, this is a great place to stay especially if you are new to the city.

I am very pleased with my living experience during my Masters programme here at Merchant Studios. It is a very clean and tidy building and the staff are extremely helpful and welcoming. Any time there has been a problem or issue I needed help with the staff were eager to get it fixed ASAP. Also, the building is only approximately 2 minutes from the university of Strathclyde, and 5 mins from Glasgow city centre! It has made my experience here extremely rewarding and I’ve been able to walk everywhere as everything is in such close proximity. I would definitely recommend anybody to stay here during their studies and I would definitely come back! Thanks.

This is my first year living at Merchant Studios and I’ve absolutely loved it! I’ve got my own space to do my own thing, yet at the same time, I am able to socialise with others living in the building! Not only that, the staff has been amazing toward me! I’ve had to deal with some personal experiences which weren’t pleasant, but the staff was always there to look out for my well-being as well as check up on me on days I was feeling low and needed a shoulder to cry on!

I've been staying in Merchant Studios for 3 years and it certainly would continue. Brilliant staff from the manger to the night owl. Great location for grocery stores, bars, city centre and Strathclyde University. The studio size is reasonable to the price you will pay. Big windows. Great view. 24/7 the staff are there to help you. The last amazing thing that the rooms have ACs, you can adjust it to heat or cool!!

I absolutely love and enjoy my stay at Merchant Studios! In fact, it is my second year at Merchant’s. I feel completely at home here because the studio is perfect, and moreover, all the staff members have been amazingly welcoming and caring right from the first day. I have never met such lovely people anywhere else. They have made the stay, especially during the pandemic restrictions, much easier as they have been so kind and friendly. All facilities that students would require are available here. I have been beyond satisfied with my stay, and I cannot recommend Merchant Studios enough! I will definitely miss this place once my course is over, and I would undoubtedly stay here again if I were to be a student.

Overall experience was ok apart from a few hiccups. Gerry, Helena, Scott, david, Melissa, Martin and the guy on during the day on the weekend are all great and friendly people who would do anything for you! The other staff I haven’t mentioned aren’t so but I’ll just leave it at that:) The power cuts can be pretty annoying and Iv had to throw all my items in the fridge out at these occasions but I understand it’s out of the buildings control and there is nothing they can do to prevent them. Studios are pretty expensive already for what you get and to my surprise they’ve increased the prices very disproportionately compared to previous years, Just seems like money grabbing to me! I’d understand if they included extras such as a gym or movie room etc like other accommodations nearby have and they are much cheaper than merchant studios:/ The laundry is just a joke and can cost you upwards for £50 a month- this should be free and included in the price of the already expensive rent.

The cost of accommodation is with Student Roost as a company Merchant Studios do not have any control over the cost of the accommodation. Student Roost have probably made the decision for the increase due to inflation; we do however offer different ways of saving money when choosing to live with us at any Student Roost site, you can do this by Early-booking, Re-booking and referring a friend could get you £150 in vouchers for each referral, you can view all our discounts at our website; https://www.studentroost.co.uk/ Due to the pandemic, we have not been able to upgrade or add any extras within our property, this is something we have been hoping to look at for when social distancing comes to an end for our students to feel at home with the space and facilities we have around the building. Our laundry system and most other student accommodations will use Circuit within their properties, here are some tips to save money on laundry, Use a drying rack instead of using money on both washing and drying. Only using the laundry when you need to. Only run full loads of washing. If you are trying shared living for the first time you may consider washing your clothes together and splitting the cost Know when to wash your clothes guide. Bras – Two to three Dresses – One to three Jeans – Six to 10 Pyjamas – Three to four Skirts – Five to seven Sweatshirts – Five to six Swimwear – One T-shirt – One to two Underwear – One Workout gear – One. Staff have been very kind and helpful during the pandemic and providing all the support they can. All restrictions and NHS guidelines have been passed on to ensure we all understood what the guidelines were for our area. Any problems have been fixed promptly, and all staff are willing to do everything they can to ensure we have a pleasurable and safe environment too stay in. Price is pretty expensive per studio even though the location is very good. Staff is very friendly. This year the electricity cuts were a bit too much. Social space is ok compared to other accommodations.

I stayed in merchant studios for 7 months and it was a great experience. The staff are supper friendly and helpful and the place is very quiet and relaxing. I would highly recommend it for anyone who is looking for an accommodation that is near the city centre. One slight problem that happened to me was ventilation, other than that its a great place.

It's currently my third year living in Merchant Studios, and every year my experience here keeps getting better. I feel at home, because of the lovely staff. They are so welcoming and always there for us 24*7, to be honest. Love how the reception area and ground floor is decorated for the major festivals celebrated in different countries. We get to know of different cultures. The social space is always clean, including the washrooms there. The staff, everyday, makes sure to keep it hygienic, I have witnessed it. There is a dedicated study space for those who like a quiet time. Easy access to collect the parcels. My parcels have never been misplaced. Wifi range is great, I can connect it to 4 gadgets. There's free temporary guest access wifi. Last but not the least, this accommodation is just a 2 mins walk to University of Strathclyde and a 5-10 mins walk to George square and Buchanan Street (for all lovely shopping stores! In the heart of city center. Absolutely worth living here.

Moved into a studio apartment for my first term and I love it. I have plenty of space to myself and the property is only a 10 minute walk from George Square and the rest of the city center. Staff are polite and always helpful.

The overall living space, location, maintenance team, and management is good. However, my personal opinion is that each room has their own small problems that could be a headache to the person living there. For example, my room's shower drainage system does not work well. Although the maintenance team was really helpful in helping me to unclog it, but it keeps happening. My friend's room, on the 6th floor, does not have a working heating system. Her only choice was to get a portable heater. I have also heard some of the friends living in the building does not have a strong wifi. The Wifi only work in certain spots in the room (I personally didn't face this). So it really depends on your luck on which room you get, because you will face different little problems depending on the room you stay. All I could say is, may the luck be with you!

I absolutely love this place and there's no other place I'd rather live. Helena, Jerry, Dave, Scott and Melissa they are the best people I've met and they take such amazing care of me! I feel right at home because of these warm hearted people♥️ Coming to the rooms, they are really good. I wished I had chosen a silver or gold room but nevertheless, bronze is equally great! The common area is vast and so great for house parties. They even have a meeting room which comes handy all the time! The internet wifi is super fast and I never had any problems. It is located in such close proximity of my university which made my life much easier. Choosing merchant studios was one of the best decisions I've made and I'm gonna miss this place a lot once I leave it just because of the above mentioned people. All love to merchant studios and I wish them all the luck!♥️♥️

I'am Staying here since the past 1 and 1/2 years. This is one of the best places to stay in Glasgow. The staff is super friendly and very understanding. Any problem with the maintenance is taken care immediately. The location of merchant studios is excellent. Its very close to supermarkets, train stations and two major universities. All in all its a lovely accommodation to stay in, both your privacy and social social experience are kept intact. And cannot emphasise this more but the staff and security are really helpful which will lead to your experience a memorable one.

I am currently studying my masters degree at Strathclyde University. The location as well as the staff that manages the building is great. They are always able to help and open to any comment. I hardly recommend this accommodation if you are planning to pursue a degree at Strathclyde Uni, due to the location and comfort.

Not all heroes work in DC or Marvel, some of them work in Merchant studios. Scott, Melissa, David, Jerry, Hellen and all the other amazing people there are all quite friendly and supportive. They are beyond cool and will help you not only with your accommodation or Uni but also with the whole aspect of your being in Glasgow. You won’t regret your staying in Merchant’s, it is in the City Centre close to nearly all the Universities in the area. As well as to the subways, Central Station, Queen street station etc.. BTW, if you like parades, you will have the chance to watch a few out of your window on Sundays.

The staff of merchants are kind and willing to help. I had some problems with the heating system in my bathroom before, they try to help to fix on that day, and concern that I might do not have the hot water in the evening, even borrow me another bathroom in another empty room. If you ask me where you could find great accommodation in Glasgow? Then come to Merchant studios.

The staff are fantastic! Internet always very fast. Great location 10 minute walk from the centre. Always very clean social areas. 24 hour security and a safe area. Always very warm and feels like a home away from home. Rooms are perfect for all you need, well laid out and modern. Large window lets in lots of light and good storage space provided. The staff members are really helpful, amazing, friendly and overtime they become like your family. The student accommodation is pretty good, super convenient and fast service response if any, totally worth the price. It's near to Aldi, Pharmacy and the university of Strathclyde. The nearest city market, shopping malls are within the range of 2miles from here. They have amazing restaurants as well nearby. I highly recommend this accommodation

Fast internet connection makes life easier. Social space is awesome but the parties in the weekends can be very noisy. I think there should be some restrictions on that. The smell can be pretty awful bcz of all the cooking, it would be great to have air refreshers in the corridors.

£150 voucher for recommending friend does not work at least it did not work for me. I recommended my friend to move in and did everything what they required to get that voucher and even put my reference number at the reception. However, I did not get any voucher even though my friend has already been living in Merchant studios around one month. Moreover, I talked with staff and emailed to the main office, I got different answers and did not get my voucher unfortunately. So disappointed with that as I put so much effort for getting that voucher and still did not get it (

An amazing place to stay, especially if you study at Strathclyde University. Groceries such as Aldi, Spar, Sainsbury and Tesco are very close to the accommodation and do not need to climb to the hills with purchased products. University is 5 minutes walking distance. Train station is also close, but not as close as you do not hear the trains which is perfect. Loved this place and recommended for two of my friends to live in a coming year.

Great place to live!! The location is amazing, even for students studying at the University of Glasgow. It is a 10 minute walk to the subway station, and within 25 minutes you are at the campus. The hall management employees are super friendly, always are up for a chat and directly fix your problems or answer your questions. The fact that there is always someone there gives a safe feeling. The studios itself are very nice, modern, and have airconditioning (!!!). The social spaces are clean and there is a pool and ping pong table, study room and a large tv with playstation in the entrance hall. Also, the windows are double glassed, so there is not much noise from outside. It is probably one of the best value for money you will find in the merchant city of Glasgow. I would 100% recommend this accommodation!

This place is amazing!! VALUE FOR MONEY: It's the best place in Glasgow for its money. The building is new and even the cheapest option of the rooms that this accommodation offers is comfortable enough. LOCATION: The location is perfect. Strathclyde University is just 5min on foot, and you got ALDI stores 3min away as well. HALL MANAGEMENT: They are all so kind and willing to help you whenever the problem is as fast as possible CLEANING! No issues with that SOCIAL SPACES/EXPERIENCE: There is enough room in the building to study like a quiet room, a pool, and a table tennis table as well as a PS4 with a huge tv. The reason I gave 4 stars is that if you are a gym type person you would like to have a gym inside as well something that it was missing but this is not a big issue since Strathclyde sports center is just 5 min away. INTERNET: Fast connections with zero issues OVERALL I'm glad that I have booked a year to Merchant studios, overall it was a great experience!!!

Our overall experience at the accomodation was very pleasant. We enjoyed living here for the past year and would definitely recommend it to anyone who can afford it. The reception and security staff were always helpful and friendly at any time of the day. There is 24h reception so if you are expecting a delivery you can rest assured they will accept it on your behalf and keep it safe for you untill your collection. We had several cases where something needed fixing in our studio and they were always responsive and quick to fix it for us..(usually in the next working day) So if you are looking for a place to live close to uni, in the heart of the city centre and with lots of social events, you should definitely consider this place. -A. and S.

I moved in Merchant studios 7 months ago.My experience in this accomondation so far is amazing.The staff here is very kind and willing to help at any time . The accomondation is 5 minutes on foot from the city center and the Strathclyde university is only 2 minutes walk. Plus, High street train station ,Aldi and SPAR are nearby.So, you dont need to worry about anything.Finally, the Rooms are very luxury and provide you all the confort in order to have a Great experience at Merchant studios.

We move into merchant studios to take over someones tenancy, and have already booked for 2019/2020... its a very friendly place to live. Every morning/afternoon your greeted with a smile a hello or even a wave from melissa,scott or david.. the entrance hall is always clean with alot going on at all times wether its people playing chess, or watching sport on the tv.. its a very active building. The staff here are always happy to help what ever the problem, including the night staff. The internet works good no issues.. the building is local to everything. rooms are spacious with plenty of storage..All in all I would highly recommend to everyone. Definitely worth 5 stars!

Great place to stay during your studies. The staff is extremely friendly and always willing to help. I got in as a replacement tenant and everything went really short notice but I could always count on the staff's friendly support. The individual flats are great when focusing on your studies and there are a couple of social events being organized to avoid feeling isolated. The location in the city centre is great although not ideal when studying at the University of Glasgow. The kitchenettes could have been better equipped (no toaster, no kettle...) And the beds and desk chairs are not ideal when you are struggling with back pain. Unfortunately the laundry machines are quite expensive. Overall a nice accomodation when you are looking for some extra calm and privacy to focus on your studies but situated good enough to still go out and enjoy the city.

The best price and location ever for an excellent all-inclusive and spacious studio room! I really like how the room is furnished: a big whiteboard, lots of space to fit in my stuff and keep it organized, a multi-functional microwave oven that helps me create (and be creative of) tons of menus, and an air conditioner that keeps me cozy in every changing season. The staff is super freindly and welcoming, plus very attentive and keen to help. I am very pleased by the flexibility of payment here and will absolutely stay here all three years through my PhD.

Loved my stay during the 2018-2019 academic year. I had come for my PostGrad at the University of Glasgow, and although it's a little far from my University, it is well connected by public transport. The bus stop is 2 mins away, Train station is 5 mins, and the nearest subway station is 15 mins on foot. So I did not have any problems for everyday travelling to the University. The management at the reception are the nicest people who'd greet you every time you'd cross the hall. Regular maintenance checks are done. The wifi is decent, the heating/air conditioning is excellent. We'd have socials and free pizza or goodies on several nights. Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with my stay here, and will surely miss this place once I move out.

Staying with Merchant studios this year was a blast. From the start it was clear that the on-site team were helpful with any questions you may bring to them. Events organised by the onsite team gave great opportunities to get to know one another who live in the building. All the facilities included are in good condition, with easy access to them at all times. The location is amazing with Aldi supermarket being 2 minutes walk away and the Strathclyde university campus being 2 minutes away also. The rooms are great, with everything that you need comfortably packed into the studio rooms. The large windows allow plenty of natural light into the room and air conditioning allows you to keep it at a comfortable temperature of your choice. Extremely happy to have stayed here and have rebooked for next year.

Very poor internet, rooms are very dark and a lot of the building and facilities look run down

I think that it is very expensive , the internet is not working that fast and there is not that much of social experience but the location is nice , the common room , cleaning and also the hall management.

It's a good studio but the corridors and the laundry room aren't always clean. In addition to that, the maintanace issues aren't solved quickly.

I used to have some friends living at merchant studios and they all loved living there. Superb reception and maintenance team/ perfect location to the university, restaurants and supermarkets/ Great value for the price.
