How are the Top 20 worked out?
We’ve made the job of finding the best university for WiFi and internet easy by crunching our student review scores. Based on 19,323 student reviews, we can now reveal our top 20 league table of the best universities for internet and WiFi in the UK, as decided by students!
Why are university internet and WiFi services so important?
Think about the amount of time you spend watching streaming services, catching up with friends and family over Zoom or playing games online.
With a large chunk of university education now being provided online, fast speeds and good signal strengths are a necessity.
So, it's important to know the university you're going to makes investing in its IT infrastructure a priority. Our university reviews help you do just that.
There’s more to university IT teams than you might think!
Even though eduroam WiFi service is available across every campus, it doesn’t mean all university WiFi is the same. A number of universities have their own networks, like the University of Cambridge's (#9) UniOfCam-IoT or Lancaster University’s (20) ‘ResNet’ for student accommodation, making wireless service always readily available.
To make doubly sure students always have internet access University of Plymouth (#17) have provided ethernet ports in every student room, meaning you can connect your device from the relaxation of your own room with network access there when you need it.
IT service teams take the pain out of setting up your devices by providing dedicated help desks to sort out all those pesky IT issues. Like the University of Bath’s (#3) Digital, Data and Technology team who are on hand to sort your IT challenges!
Not only are IT teams dedicated to providing excellent internet and WiFi, they are always coming up with ways to make students’ and staff’s life more easy. For example the University of Southampton’s (#14) ‘MySouthampton’ app helps staff and students know what is going on across campus, from timetables to available PCs.

"Good wifi in all of the Uni buildings that I've been in."
Topping our list is Bangor University, whose WiFi is reported by students to be flawless, fast and with good coverage across all university buildings. The IT Services' Support Teams at Bangor comprise 12 teams who provide critical IT service support for students and departmental staff.
The University of Sheffield
"Good university with good campus, good clubs and societies, good students union, good careers service, good internet."
The University of Sheffield’s innovative approach to education comes through in the quality and the range of IT and business services that supports teaching and learning. They have developed digital systems and infrastructure that students have found extremely helpful, and students have rated their internet provision very highly, making them well worthy of a second place in our ranking.
University of Bath
"You can get strong wifi all over campus."
Students at the University of Bath have highly rated the university's eduroam WiFi on campus, with no reports of blackspots. The Digital, Data and Technology team even have a team on hand at the IT Service Desk in the library to fix your laptop at their clinic. Now that's service for you!
Harper Adams University
"The wifi is very good considering the rural location and can be accessed throughout the campus and all of the first year accommodation."
Harper Adams University's IT provision is ranked very highly by students, which is impressive given that it's in a rural location in Shropshire. Their student support network, of which their IT Support is a part, has been praised by students as being first class and they offer a range of services to help students thrive, including IT training and an eLearning team.
University of Reading
"Wifi everywhere, quickly connects."
University of Reading students have rated the eduroam WiFi at the university very highly, with experiences being largely problem-free. The Digital Technology Services are there to support students, with an IT Service Desk available in the library, and a very handy tool that tells you where you can find an available PC on campus!
University of Portsmouth
"WIFI is very fast all over campus throughout all buildings"
Taking full advantage of the flexibility provided by the eduroam wireless network, students at the University of Portsmouth benefit from a wireless connection in all campus buildings and ‘over 70 other locations in Portsmouth’. Wi-Fi at Portsmouth is ‘very fast all over campus throughout all buildings’. The ability to access a seamless wireless network connection throughout the city offers real flexibility to students. That sees Portsmouth take a top 10 result from us.
Nottingham Trent University (NTU)
"The internet actually works great on campus so I don't have to worry if I can't use my own mobile data!"
NTU has evidently invested in quality IT infrastructure and services. Students have praised its free, accessible, reliable and strong internet connectivity available across university buildings.
University of Warwick
"Great WIFI almost everywhere."
Students describe the University of Warwick as having excellent digital systems and online resources which are effective for academic work as well as organisational communication. Their internet provision on campus is highly-rated.
University of Cambridge
"Wifi is pretty much all around town"
Cambridge's dedicated IT Help and Support services exist to make sure students have uninterrupted connection to those all-important internet services. Whether its support accessing eduroam or Cambridge's own UniOfCam-IoT service, poor internet will never be a reason to miss online lectures or an assignment deadline again!
University of Brighton

University of East Anglia

With 24/7 coverage offered to all students, UEA gives their students a complete experience. Recently, new network infrastructure plans are being drawn up to extend coverage beyond the UEA campus to surrounding hospitals, in support of those supporting our country in such critical times.
Imperial College London

Students studying at Imperial College London benefit from three separate internet networks, giving them campus-wide coverage. Imperial’s ‘WPA’ network for College members is fast and reliable, working both on campus and within halls of residence. Building on this, Imperial offers two additional wireless networks, eduroam and ‘Govroam’, to College members and visitors. Extensive wired networks allow students to access the highest internet speeds, making sure digital studying is never interrupted.

Sheffield Hallam University
"Free WiFi is available throughout the University"
Sheffield Hallam offers students extensive online resources and course materials to study anytime, anywhere with fast, reliable WiFi as standard. Students access everything they need through a Virtual Learning Environment including online learning materials such as recordings of lectures, online teaching sessions, collaborative activities with peers, electronic books, and self-study resources. Extensive IT support is available digitally and face-to-face when using library services.

In addition to the eduroam network, students can advantage of a dedicated halls network called ‘ResNet’, all under the constant maintenance of the extensive IT service team.
