My shared house was pretty big (3 floors, around 7 rooms on each). The main difference to other types of university accommodation is that shared houses are older buildings refurbished as student housing rather than apartment style buildings. So few communal spaces, but my room was very spacious (some were smaller) and had good basic furniture and amenities. The common areas were the kitchens and shared bathrooms (one kitchen and two bathrooms and a toilet per floor). The ventilation in the kitchen wasn’t great but overall, okay. The biggest plus point for me was it was 5 min away from the business school, and about 15 min away from the city center. I haven’t heard too many loud noises, definitely not at the Hyde park-level. In terms of support by the accommodation staff, they were helpful if you reached out to them, if not you were left alone mostly. Your housemates will make or break your experience, because with the right ones, it really feels like one big home.

Different shared houses are different but there was no living room. No communal space for everyone to meet, so we often went to someone's room to watch a movie or play cards. The toilets are cubicles. Two toilets and a shower in the same room, no lock on the main door. You get used to not having privacy very quickly! Most of them are close to university, which is great, until you remember that Leeds is a very drunk city. People screaming and singing, coming home at 4/5am, is very frequent. Bonus points for multiple half-finished vodka bottles on campus the day after. Being close to university is great, but not as close as shared houses. Or woodhouse, incredibly loud there too.
