Do not disregard the previous reviews of Kelvinhaugh! It's a s***** place where students are milked for their money. As an international student who is currently staying here, I feel like a cash cow to the University of Glasgow and its accommodation. Totally disgusting that this place is run like a business, a terrible one! My room is really dark and I could hear sound from outside the building. Not only that, we have this stupid fire drill which happened early in the morning when people are sleeping. Expensive laundry. For the rental price, students deserve better facilities than this piece of s***.
Very basic rooms, no charm at all, bit of a hospital atmosphere. Fire drills very early in the morning when everyone was still sleeping. Expensive for what you get, friends who rented privately owned flats had much better deals.
Being close to the Uni is the only advantage. The place is awful. My curtains were covered in blood on the outside, bed is literally a metal frame, paper thin walls and shaking when doors shut as people before said. Cleaners do nothing (but complain if you haven’t done every single dish in the place), they put your stuff wherever too. Maintenance don’t work weekends, my flat went a weekend with no hot water in the winter. FREEZING. 3rd floor flats are better, bigger windows, bigger heater and bigger room so I guess I got lucky in that respect. Shower room floods every time you use it. Rent is paid funny, you don’t pay the last month so it ends up £700 a month when advertised as £525 or something. Kitchens are too small for flat parties and no couches. Not good if you have SAAS as the payments don’t work but I guess you do end up with the last payment as your own to spend. You can get a lot better for a lot cheaper, or if you want the halls experience go private for the same price.
WORST PLACE EVER!!! Its a torture ground and is the most horrible place that I have ever come across. The walls are paper thin, the maintenance is bad like real bad, the lighting is so dim that you absolutely need to replace all lamps, heating is s***. I am constantly suffering from fever or rashes. I hate this place. Trust me. Private accommodation is much cheaper and better.
It's too late for me, save yourselves! I find it sort of comforting to know that everyone else is having a horrible time here too. It's all completely true. The doors are insanely loud, vibrating the walls when they slam shut. Cars go past CONSTANTLY. And I'm not talking 'a car or two at a time', no. What I'm saying is that it's a through-road for all vehicles, at ALL hours, as they avoid the traffic lights on the parallel road. I think it's true to say that every night into the early hours of every morning, noisy drunken people singing/screaming/yelling/smashing etc make their way back along the street too. Altogether it's a lot of constant, relentless noise. All the time. It's overwhelming and stressful, and I have to take naps (if I can) during the day to keep functioning.
Don’t disregard the previous reviews and think “Oh, maybe they’re exaggerating, it can’t possibly be that bad.” It can, and it is. Between the absolutely absurdly loud fire doors and the blaring street traffic at all hours (not to mention obnoxious human traffic) you’ll manage only 2 hours of sleep at a time, day or night, without interruption. If you’re lucky. Maintenance doesn’t work on weekends— even if your bathroom floods, like ours did. We saw a rat in more than one kitchen, once had our toilet break and remain unfixed for a week (we were given a bucket by Cairncross House to manually flush our toilet, making the entire flat smell like a sewer), and, to top it all off, there is no heating in the building at night, regardless of how cold it gets. DO NOT stay in Kelvinhaugh Street. It’s simply not worth the money. Pay a little extra and find somewhere suitable for human residence.
I had read some reviews about the noise before living here, but really hadn't appreciated how bad it would be or how horribly it would affect me. I'm tired all the time, irritable and emotional. I have bought expensive ear plugs (but they only do so much) and go to visit family in a different city every two weeks or so, so I can catch up on sleep. Completely was not worth living here.
Have you ever been interested to know what sleep deprivation torture might be like? If so - living in Kelvinhaugh Street is the PERFECT opportunity to test your physical, mental and emotional fortitude. Or maybe you feel too happy? Too well-rested? Kelvinhaugh Street will fix that. With impressively loud doors and paper-thin walls, Kelvinhaugh Street is the place to be for 360 degree assault on the ears 24/7.
Would recommend not staying here. It's far too noisy at night with people and cars going past constantly. The fire-doors are ridiculously loud inside the flat, so anytime a flatmate leaves any room you're woken up or at least mildly annoyed by the unreasonably loud slam. The walls are so thin that we hear everything. My room was missing things that should have been there, and things are old and broken throughout the flat. I think it would be worth the extra effort looking for a private place.
Worst place I ever lived. I recomend everyone to search for a private apartment. Sure it is takes more time etc. but its worth in the long run. Especially when you are an international student and think it might be inconvenient for you to search for an apartment by yourself, but you will regret to spent your time in a tiny box like room for maybe double the price than a shared flat would cost. Plus the walls here are paper-thin. I got constantely woken up at night by my faltmates just going out of their room since we have this extermly unreasonable firedoors in everywhere which are extremly loud. Also the waterpipes are running through the walls can wake you up or just your flatmat talking on the phone because you can seriously hear everything through the walls. They do regular inspection during the most stressful time of the semester and make you clean up instead of writing essays. There are so many better place - just don't choose this one.It looks like a prison.
Very standard student halls. I.e. expensive and crap. But the location is fairly good. Close to shops, the uni, and places to visit. It can be quite noisy at night as this area has a lot of student accommodation.
