All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

The manager is really kindful to us international students. By the way, Chatting with Brooke is really helpful to my spoken English. What’s more, there is an efficient communication between the manager and me. She will answer any question I asked with enough patience. And the second important thing is that the apartment is so safe!

Horrendous. Such an incredible ripoff. About as well built as a cardboard box and the issues that arise as a result of this never get resolved. There is not a single person associated with this building who gives a single toss about the people who live in it. If you’re unlucky enough to live here next year or at any time in the future then expect leaks through your roof, an abundance of mould, visible and audible rats and frequent fires in the bin room due to it so rarely being emptied. To top it off, you can barely even keep yourself clean due to there only being TWO washing machines for over 150 people. This place stinks and so does everyone who lives in it. AVOID.
Location is perfect, near for my college , market, museum. Stuffed are perfect, nice and helpful , sometimes inspiring because we might have little insightful chat The facilities are good, except sometimes there is some noice from the back of the building Anyway I live living in potterrow
Excellent location and the service is really friendly! Would recommend to anyone!
Best accomodation for students, had an amazing time there, great management!
I've lived at Potterrow for two years now and it has been a great experience. Highlights are definitely the location which is absolutely amazing, living right next to the main University campus with the rest of the city within walking distance. Grocery stores and pharmacies are very close by as well as great restaurants and several coffee shops. The property management is amazing, the managers are really friendly and very helpful with any problems. You feel really welcome at the property and it's great to have that safety net of knowing that there is someone on site to talk to if it's needed. The social spaces are great with a big common room and study spaces. If you want to rebook for another year it's really easy and you can ensure that you get the same room again which was really nice. Living here has definitely been a highlight of my uni experience.
