I used to live there as an international student during my freshers year - it was an amazing experience ! For someone who came from far away, it was perfect in the sense that it gave me the opportunity to socialise with students in the building, but I still managed to have "calm", "quiet" moments when needed, especially during the exams period and also a clean kitchen ! The housing staff was extremely helpful and friendly, and the building in itself was very well located - while it was only 5 minutes away by foot from the campus' centre (lecture buildings), the house (especially the Josephine Butler House) was surrounded by grass, trees, and flowers, which made the view extremely lovely !

Houses was the best option. Everything else was either too trashy, too far away, or plain ugly and shared.

I spent my first year of University in the Houses. A great experience: I met people from different backgrounds. It was quiet. The cleaning staff were excellent and very friendly.

great place to be, quieter and away from the center of campus, rooms are slightly larger than in towers. 4-6 people share a kitchen. downside, no common spaces specific to halls at Essex, but there are lots of places to be from SU bar to the lakes.

In my opinion the houses are the best accommodation on campus. in deciding upon which accommodation I wanted I had three main priorities. The first was that the room was en-suite, the second was proximity to campus and the third was cost. The Houses are en-suite which is ideal. It is never more than a five minute walk to the centre of campus and I live in the furthest house and the cost is fair in comparison to other options. South courts are slightly closer and the rooms slightly bigger but I personally don't feel that is worth the extra it costs to reside there. The accommodation is well maintained for the most part and the cleaner very efficient and friendly. The kitchen is big and has everything you could need. The Houses are quieter than the Towers but I'm happy with that because I like my sleep! I've made some of the best friends in this accommodation and would strongly recommend it to anyone! Just sad I have to leave next year!!!!
