god where do I begin, I lived on the east side of the building since the construction and opening of the library Founders has become a bit of a nightmare, the rooms are lovely and by far big enough to accommodate the most demanding student with plenty of space to store things, the food is intermittently amazing, it can be awful but quite often you end up having some amazing dish for under 4 quid! it's so easy to meet people, in fact, I joke that you cant stand in the same place for more than 3 minutes without someone talking to you! however when you get tonight, being cursed with deadlines and 9 am seminars as I am its been quite important to sleep, however without fail at 1-3 am you will get woken up by inconsiderate drunks shouting at singing, fine at a weekend but not on a Wednesday at 4 AM when you have an Essay and 4 classes the next day ! in short, i recommend that you check out somewhere like Reid unless you are a hardcore party animal ! trust me!
Great being so close to everything, but I lived on 4th floor west so it's a bit of a hike to use the stairs but the elevator in west is really sketchy. Also it's a gamble as to whether or not you can get into west at night, as they lock most or all the doors, making you go around the entire building to the one open door in east. also at night they lock a lot of the doors to hallways and into the building so it's sort of door roulette as to which ones are going to be open. The bathrooms are alright, but there's nothing to dry your hands with in the ones for the bedrooms, and the shower rooms can get really cold. But standard single rooms get sinks in them on 3rd, 4th and 5th floors (apparently it's spotty on 2nd), so that helps a lot. Dining hall is good, lots of food places deliver there, and the hub is a really short walk (5 mins). Sometimes the corridors can get noisy depending on where you are (the walls are thick but the doors are thin).
You get to live in a castle! How much better does it get! Great rooms, although you ave to share bathrooms but you get used to it afterwards. You have no kitchen so you are always hungry as dinner finishes at 7pm. The view is incredible! In the uni so you can wake up last minute and make it to your lessons. The corridors are massive so it is easy to socialise just by sitting with your group of friends there. However, security can get annoying as they always spoil the fun. Bathrooms are always really clean as the cleaners come and clean them every morning. The clock tower chimes on the hour every hour but it is not as bad as people think... (depending on if you are a light sleeper or not)... It sometimes reminds you to go to bed when you hear it chime 3 times at 3am. The food is ok. lots of selection. However, so if not in the price of the accommodation, it is a discount. One meal comes out to about £2.00. Most of the time it is good but lacks seasoning. Founder's is THE BEST!
If you want something that looks fancy and will impress your friends who don't go to Royal Holloway, then these are the Halls for you. However, if you want reliable internet, power and a building where the Fire Alarm isn't regularly set off at 3 am, then Founder's isn't for you. Yes the rooms are okay, they are relatively spacious and yes the Instagram photos you will get each morning and evening as the sun rises and sets over the Quad are amazing, but it's not worth the money you pay for it. The building is cold and drafty, the elevator regularly fails to work, the doors lock at 7 pm, and often the outer doors are locked meaning you're running around the building trying to find a way in after a night at the Student Union. The Common Rooms are filled with old couches with various inconspicuous and unexplainable stains, a TV that is useless unless you bring your wires and batteries for the remote. In short, it's pretty, but also pretty awful.
I was in a shared room and everyone thought it would be dirty and there would be no privacy but it was the complete opposite. I made a really good friend and despite the lack of social spaces (bar the corridor where pre drinks were banging) and the showers were always clean, I only got a cold shower once or twice the whole year. Founders has everything you need and is really close to all the lecture locations.
Big wide corridors mean plenty of socials in the corridor, lots of people in a section means plenty of people to meet. Bathrooms are good, I've never queued for a shower or toilet. Pantry is small but does the job. It's amazing looking at the building and knowing you live there! Gorgeous place just make sure you're healthy cos it's right at the top of the hill and the stairs in founders are endless. Really convenient location anyway and a super experience. Come live in founders!
Amazing experience, made so many friends because there are so many opportunities to socialise because of the large numbers on the corridors. Only 1 common room on the boys floor which was a bit annoying but did get us to have more social connections with the boys floor. The halls are SO pretty and you are right on campus! Founders library, the chapel, picture gallery and Crosslands bar are all in these halls. i had a great experience in these halls, no regrets whatsoever.
I'd recommend Founder's to anyone, but before you go there you got to know some things. There are weekly fire alarms at 9am on a Thursday, you can't drink alcohol in the common room (only one on the boy's floor but everyone can use it), and some of the security team are a little too power trippin. But you really can't beat this place. I seriously doubt you can get the same social atmosphere in a flat, and the sunny quads are perfect in the summer- especially with the Crosslands bar onhand for a Pimms. Plus, any issue we had with the security team was sorted by the RSAs.
A great experience meeting wonderful people, and food is great value for money. Rooms are a great size and plenty of storage while the washbasins in the rooms are so useful. Plus shared bathrooms are not as bad as you'd expect!
Very well located being on campus; friendly housekeeping staff and reception staff; very friendly catering staff in founder's dining hall; I have made many friends in founder's because of sharing a pantry with many people, and eating in the dining hall (because founder's is catered) - but there has never been more than three other people in the pantry at the same time, so it hasn't felt crowded; sometimes cleaning isn't perfect, but often that's because the housekeeping staff don't clean up mess students deliberately left, or couldn't be bothered to clean up (eg spilt/leaked milk in fridges in pantry); sometimes people can be noisy at night - fairly wide corridors so people sometimes mess about in them in the evening/night, and because crosslands bar is in Founders South quad, I sometimes here people being loud in the late evening; internet wifi generally good, though on one or two occassions, was noticeably slower for a few days; overall I really enjoy founders!
The people are sociable and since you have access to many different types of people, there is no struggle to make friends and hang out with different types of people when you want. Everything is very close by and you don't have to worry that much about being late. But most importantly, who wouldn't want to live in a castle?!
The rooms are surprisingly big here. I was lucky to be placed in an even number room so I can look out at the beautiful Founders building. The toilets are cleaned daily and the pantry has everything you need in case you missed dinner. The founders dining hall is top notch. It can echo and get a bit noisy as the walls and doors are thin but the noise is dealt with really well. But if you want to party... you can't in founders which sucks.
Cons: -Not at all soundproofed, expect to be woken frequently by inconsiderate students late at night. -There is male/female segregation, but it's ignored so it makes it a pain when you want a shower, especially in the evening/late at night. -the bedrooms are on effectively a really long corridor, rooms are spread out so it is harder to meet new people than in flats, but not impossible. (Unless you're on the 5th floor where it's basically a converted loft) -Security don't check inside halls and only sort disturbances out/come inside if there's a complaint. Pros -Rooms are incredible, designed so well and look very smart. Most rooms have a wash basin which is very useful. -All rooms are spacious, but the larger rooms have a small seating area which is a nice touch. -The corridor and toilet areas are cleaned daily so there is no mess at all. -Cleanliness is very good, and there are no bad smells. -There's never any queues for the bathroom/shower. -Incredible views.
So far everyone has been incredibly friendly and its been so nice meeting such lovely people. Although we're sharing a pantry and bathrooms there hasn't been any problems with that - everyone has just been patient and considerate!
Founders West was just in one word 'amazing'. I had a great time and everything was very well organised. I was catered, and every two days or so there were cleaners cleaning the whole building. Not to talk about the awesome castle that I lived in!
Truly terrible hall. It's never quite, especially since when they test the fire alarm ever Tuesday morning. There is no kitchen, just a small pantry. If you want to live in a hall, whatever you do, don't choose founder's.
Doesn't get much better than living in a castle! Very sociable hall. Only bad thing is common room is tiny, pantry is shared between like 40 people and its also tiny and Founders food isn't that great but its very cheap! Rooms are spacious and you get great views too!
Founders is beautiful and the rooms are quite big. The pantry sucks - you share three small fridges and two microwaved with thirty other people who will throw away and steal yor food. The bins are small and constantly overflowing and the Hoover is always missing for days at a time. Sort of sociable as in you live with lots of people but there wasn't a common room at all until one week before the end of the year because they were using it as 'emergency accomodation'. The cleaners let themselves into your room on inspection days!! I had my clothes from the night before on the floor and was issued a warning notice for a trip hazard and they let themselves in again the week later to check id moved my trousers? Lool ridiculous felt like I was being told off by my parents. Founders is not soundproof at all, pretty annoying when you have a paper due and your above-neighbor is playing the oboe at 1am. Also the food at founders is not good and fattening. Good location though.... Lol
Founders is a beautiful buding and and in a great location right at the heart of campus. The rooms are newly renovated and a good size. This is the cheapest accommodation as the rooms have shared bathrooms and single beds, I never had to wait for a shower.
Beautiful accommodation, but people steal things from the fridges in the pantry, and the bathrooms are not cleaned during the weekend which can be really gross. It is a bit overpriced, and prices are increasing every year! Sometimes the heating doesn't work, and the hall management takes some time to sort stuff out. But you are leaving in a freaking beautiful castle, it is a unique experience, and I will miss it very much!
Founders hall is great. The rooms are really big and very modern inside. The bathroom is shared but it's not an issue it's really easy to get a shower use the loo whenever you need to there isn't ever a que. In terms of kitchens there is founders dining hall and a pantry and everyone gets a locker. The pantry has in it a toaster, microwave, boiling hot water tap (for instant tea) and a sink. I didn't enjoy being catered the good wasn't great and I had to improvise using the microwave a lot. The social life was great everyone mixed loads and we always had founders parties in the boys corridor. Running away from security at night was always funny. We used to pre drink in the corridor. Overall I would recommend this hall to everyone even though the food wasn't great the positives of living in such a beautiful building with a fun environment out weight the negatives.
