Honestly I cant fault Storthes. The location is beautiful, facilities are helpful and staff are always quick to help. The internet here is surprisingly very good, and if anything ever goes wrong, maintenance are very fast to address and solve it. Not to mention the whole experience is not all that expensive and definitely worth the price. Proud to say I lived here and will be living here until my uni days are over. 10/10

Beautiful location, made some great friends, cheap rooms, trips, maintenance and security always around, hammocks, little shop and study rooms, venue is nice but expensive. However, silverfish and rats (near myers), shower is horrible (floods wetroom and has no consistant temperature) , bus is free until 9pm, and starts around half 8am so may be tricky if youre on an early/late placement/trip/library. Bus stops at 11pm with expensive taxis. In summer the bus completely stops meaning you have to walk up or down the hill to the bus stop, laundry issues in summer. Great for first year, however you may want to look around others closer to uni and make an informed decision as it is too far away from town for me. Also, kitchen utensils all got stolen but Digs solved this issue for us. You'll make great friends and I've had a great first year and have enjoyed storthes but I'm moving to IQ for 2nd year.
Storthes Hall Park has been a nightmare from the very beginning. First I made a noise complaint because someone was playing loud music close to me between 10-2pm, I over heard staff at reception to ignore the noise complaints through the day as they have every right to play their music and they were all stood there laughing about it, since this day I have lost complete respect for the “management” and other “staff members” I have had no running hot water for weeks and I have raised not one, not two but three tickets and every time they have told me they have “resolved” them, WHEN I STILL HAVE COLD WATER AFTER 1-2 MINS!!!!!! Not only that, the third time someone called Scott came to “fix” the shower he left mud and dirt all over my bathroom floor and in my shower Matt! Unacceptable. I know they all have an opinion on me, so I will not deal with any of them anymore. Not forgetting the WiFi is absolutely dire and the buses are constantly late. Do NOT stay at storthes hall park.
CHOOSE SOMEWHERE ELSE. Please, seriously do, it is my second year living here and I genuinely cannot wait to move out. My room has been bug-infested for around a month now, endless silverfish and spiders crawling up my walls and on my bed. It's disgusting and whilst paying over 3.5k for this room, the response to my email was "it is nature, deal with it" and just "don't open your windows". Felt totally fobbed off despite pest control being a thing last year- and now it's not? Ridiculous paying this amount of money and they refuse to do anything. The wifi, without a doubt, is way worse this year. It disconnects constantly and when you have deadlines to meet and things aren't loading, well that is not ideal at all. Again, totally fobbed off by staff, just "contact the company instead it's not our problem". It's disappointing to say the least, on the web and socials the place preaches about being friendly and helpful, is it NOT. They will fob you off regardless of how bad your issue is.
This accommodation almost made me quit uni. What attracted me at first were the cheap prices, carpark, Venue and "reliable" bus. All have failed to meet the high standards promised by the student-digs team. The accommodation isn't much cheaper than those in town and you will get something grotty, smelly, mouldy, stained and mostly broken. The car park is £100 a year but a parking permit, if you live in the centre, is only £20. The Venue isn't student-friendly. Prices are high and staff are unwelcoming and rude. They mostly hire it out for functions so students are there for not allowed on the premises (mostly weekends). The bus is horrendous! It breaks down all the time, on many occasions I had to pick my flatmates up as the bus broke down and they were left stranded miles away from anywhere. I wish I could say I'm over exaggerating sadly this is all true. Now, due to a shampoo splodge they have deducted money from my deposit and won't return my emails.
Would have rather driven to Huddersfield everyday then stayed here it genuinely made me want to quit uni. It’s filthy, poorly maintained, has rude and unhelpful staff, an awful location with a terrible bus service. It took my flat mate 5 months to get the mould cleaned from his bathroom. And will fine you £60 if you accidentally stay longer than 2 hours parked outside your flat. The car park permit is £100 alone and when if you live in the centre you can get a street permit for £20 a year. Don’t be fooled by what they tell you the venue is awful and very unwelcoming to students. It’s a working pub that’s situated on a student campus so the drinks are pricy and they service is slow. There’s a cinema room but good luck using it as they close the whole pub down for events every Saturday and no students are welcome. And don’t even think about getting your deposit back they’ll charge you on top for wear and tear that’s there before you even moved in. I don’t know anyone that would rebook.
Storthes hall is in a lovely location. It's a 20 minute bus journey from campus and you really feel like you're in the countryside. The buses are fairly regular although they're buses so sometimes not the most reliable. The rooms are pretty standard I think some of the other accommodations have nicer rooms but I believe they are more expensive. Wireless wifi is pretty terrible. It can't even handle a phone call for me. However when you go for a wired connection the speed is pretty good. (107mbps download, 10.8mbps upload) I've heard lots of people complain about silver fish but personally I haven't seen any. There are quite a lot of spiders though. But what did you expect, you're in nature. The venue is a nice place. Bit on the pricey side for food but drinks are fairly good prices. It's only open Wednesday to Sunday and can be a bit quiet when there aren't events on, but when there are events it can be a nice place to go to to start your night or whatever.
My room is near enough to the bus stop. Storthes hall has a safe feeling and i feel comfortable there. Good value for money because the internet, water, electricity ectara is all included in the rent, which seems really good. I would definitely recommend Storthes Hall to other students. Fairly straight forward. I hope this is helpful.
So far my experience at Storthes has been great! Very accommodating and amazing staff!
I absolutely love it at Storthes! Especially for the value of money, there are such amazing opportunities on offer. There’s 24/7 security and the staff are just a text away :)
An excellent student accommodation. Large enough rooms even for the lower priced ones, lots of activities and clubs that are on each month. Friendly staff and any issues are sorted quite quickly. Will definitely be staying here for as long as I can.
Best place to live if you want to make the most of Student social life
Honestly I cant fault Storthes. The location is beautiful, facilities are helpful and staff are always quick to help. Storthes Hall is a majorly disappointing student halls choice. It's too far from town which ruins nights out, Wifi is poor plus the rumours of silverfish and rats are true. My flatmates and I had to have our flat fumigated three times in one stay because of silver fish. Plus they've been completely uncompassionate about the pandemic, meaning I've paid full price for a room I haven't occupied since December 2nd. I fully understand I'm in a contract, but c'mon it's a pandemic and my course has been safely online since December so why would I risk my health to stay on a site where the COVID guidelines aren't being met? If I were to choose my provider again, hands down I'd go to one closer to town. Yes, Storthes is cheap but it's cheap for a reason and it'll definitely negatively impact your uni experience.
Everything about storthes is just amazing, the views here are just like no other affordable accommodation since there’s a lot of open space you can easily see the sunset and sunrise from anywhere and there’s many locations nearby such as a massive river just 5 minutes away. The staff here are lovely, the reception team are just the best and have made me happy on days they didn’t even know I was sad, the maintenance team are super helpful and always solve any problems to the best of their abilities and very respectful about your rooms item when working on it. There’s security every night which makes me feel very safe since they can be with me within a few minutes if I ever feel unsafe. Even the cleaning team are just the best making sure all the flats stairways and the gyms are clean. It’s a very very good value for money considering how big the rooms are for under £90 and I believe there’s nothing as cheap as this that offers so much, there’s a gym launderette even an on-site venue.
This place is amazing, great staff and a friendly community that has beautiful scenery and very welcoming
Lovely place to stay, easy to make friends, lots of social activities to partake in depending on your interests, friendly staff, security 24/7, wifi problems could easily be fixed with an ethernet cable, great value for the money overall
Love the space the security team are top-notch and always have an ear to listen, a comfortable place.
I absolutely love living here! The atmosphere is amazing and there is plenty to do (even during covid) and plenty of support when needed. I have rebooked for next year and can’t wait to spend another year living here! Absolutely fantastic!
Plenty of green space and brill potential for social spaces. Rooms are good value for money, although Storthes is placed out of the main town centre it is nice to come back to an accommodation that has a peaceful surrounding. As expected you can experience a few maintenance issues however these are resolved quickly by their friendly staff. Would recommend for first year students.
This is an amazing place to stay, they offer great rebooker discounts. It’s in a remote location with great scenery, the biggest downside to this is you are reliant on the busses if you don’t drive (you pay for a bus pass at the start of the year). The grounds are kept clean and tidy, during the covid year lots have social spaces have been inaccessible however social events have still been going on with quizzes and other events taking place online. The WiFi does occasionally go down however this is fixed quickly.
Storthes was recommended to me by family members who attended the university in the past and they couldn’t have recommended anywhere better. The fact the halls were located about a 15 minute bus ride outside of town gave it a homey feel as this was my commute to my hometown. The isolated feel of the woods gives me a sense of security. DIGS staff are so friendly and are always quick at sorting your parcels out. The free gym is another perk along with the plethora of events they have to offer. My flat mates and I have loved our first year here that we have decided to stay in our second year. DIGS have been great to offer discounts to returning students, they care about their residents and have made storthes a very welcoming new home to students!
The place is amazing. Amazing surroundings, staff are very kind and helpful, the venue has amazing food. The wifi signal cuts out from time to time but it’s always sorted as quickly as possible. Buses are usually on time but depending on traffic may be a few minutes late. The venue is a great way to spend time with friends, and there are many places to walk and chill out. Staff are always on hand to answer any questions and when a ticket about a maintenance issue is put up, it’s Almost always sorted straight away. The rooms are a great value for money, you get what you pay for and the site is very secure with amazing security teams every night keeping everyone safe.
I had a fantastic time while staying at Storthes. The wifi was always incredible and my room was spacious with an amazing amount of space. My favourite part was that my room was at the edge of a building and so I had a windowsill big enough to sit on comfortably and make a reading nook. The bus stop is only five minutes away and the Venue is close by. I loved the quiz nights. Warning for the laundromat, if you want your clothes dry you might want to pay for an extra dry. It's really peaceful and feels very safe. The staff are friendly and the 24 hour study room at the Venue is usually quiet and a nice place to work.
Thank you for this lovely review. We're so glad that you had a fantastic time living with us and the reading nook sounds fantastic! We hope to see you again soon.
I've been at this accommodation for two years and have enjoyed every minute! The events team, ran by Emma, work tirelessly to promote and put on many different amazing events at the Venue for all students to join in. The Venue is the onsite bar which is also a great space for socialising and it also has a quiet study space upstairs which is good to use when you're struggling with your exams/assignments or just want somewhere peaceful to do your work. This accommodation is also surrounded by lovely places to go for walks and spend time with your friends. I would 100% recommend Storthes Hall Park for students (especially first year's) you won't be disappointed with the amount of things there is to do!
Thank you for your lovely review. We're very glad that you've enjoyed the events this year and we hope to see you at one soon!
Storthes is a great place to live especially in your first year, the staff are friendly and welcoming and will help you with any questions you may have. The events and social spaces really make it stand out from other places and allows you to meet lots of new people. The bus usually takes 20/25 minutes to get to town/ the university so if you would prefer to live in the centre this probably isn't the place of you. However, it doesn't feel too long when you get used to the route etc. I really enjoyed the location in terms of being in the countryside, its great for walks and days out with your friends and family. Finally, the extra facilities such as the gym, venue, and on-site shop really means you get a very good value for money and don't have to splash out on things like expensive gym memberships. The venue is great fro a quiet drink with friends or even a meal if you have visitors, very cheap and great food!!
Thank you for your kind words. We're very happy that you've enjoyed your time living at Storthes Hall Park.
Hey I stayed at storthes my first year and my first year wouldn’t have been the same the amount of events put on is amazing and a great way to meet new people. The team put friendly and kind. I’ve seen a lot of reviews on here and I personally didn’t see any rats or silver fish... silver fish like wet places so keep your room and kitchen tidy and you’ll have no problem. I think half the problem with these reviews people have put on isn’t storthes it’s the people themselves over privileged selfish baby’s they are the rats that live at storthes. The internet did go down a few times but they worked hard to fix this and instead of complaining about it. If you took some action like I did it was fixed that on going week by having a booster put in my room. I liked the 20 minute bus journey as I could get away from the stress of uni and into a beautiful country side residence filled with woods. security are friendly and always ready to help with quick response time. Would recommend
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We're happy to hear that you've enjoyed the events this year. We have to agree that having woodland on our doorstep is a great perk! :)
So with the recent coronavirus situation they flat out refuse to refund any tenants who have packed up and left and still charge full even when someone leaves. When you leave they will charge you for any minor damage, such as £30 for a scratch on the wall that was already there. In terms of cleanliness, there is almost always mould and silverfish, and when such issues are reported it takes 7 business days for them to sort it. This includes black mould and red mould and all that lovely dangerous stuff. Also if you are unfortunate enough to be put with messy flatmates, if the flats a mess, it will be all of you that are punished. If your flatmate is nasty, they do NOTHING to solve your issue, you just have to move or put up with bullying. Only benefit is the social element, but this declines each year and depends on people. Before booking, check with Snow Island or North Point, much better location 2 minutes (literally) from university and the same price or cheaper for a similar room!
Thank you for your review. We'd like to confirm that any tenants who packed up their items and left were offered a rent reduction. We are sorry to hear about the other issues in your room, we do aim to fix issues as soon as possible. If students are having issues with their flat mates then we always encourage that you get in touch to see how we can help. We are sorry to hear that you've had some negative experiences living with us, please get in touch with us to discuss further: support@digstudent.co.uk
It’s about a 20 min bus journey from campus which is very inconvenient. Always had many nights where WiFi would go off and it not be resolved until days later.
Storthes is abit out the way which is a downside but it make it up with the social community and value for money
Apart from the location. Its the best
Not a great place to live, but all the students com together to make the experience worth it.
Rat-infested s******. I've been to hospital wings with more charm.
Not a great place to live, beautiful location, but the management is poor, its not very clean (brown water half the time). Just not worth it.
Great place to live. Great location and a reasonable price
The service levels on everything were very slick ,which in today’s competitive world I Expect more impressive the staff went that extra mile with the big and little things .....food good And varied .....impressed that the chef having cooked it all came to front of house and greeted his customers while carving .....would use again ........big thanks to Front of house manager Lisa who was all over it ....very professional ...
Storthes Hall is painted as being a picturesque halls of residence for students starting their first year of university in the middle of the countryside-what they don’t tell you is every room is infested with silverfish, bugs of every kind-the WiFi is appalling as well as the showers they provide in the en-suite bathrooms. I’m aware you pay for what you get but when the choice is either Antarctic cold or boiling hot you have to decide which you can handle. Also there’s the abandoned mental asylum just next door.
Storthes Hall is the cheapest accommodation for Huddersfield, however it has the best social side with an on-site gathering area and it is out of the way which makes it great with splitting it from university.
F****** insane, loved the place
Awful wifi, security can be a bit iffy at times, the students make the place
Enjoyed storthes in my first year, large site although it is a distance from the uni it was a good place where I met lots of friends
Never again. Worst experience of my whole time being a student, outdated, damp, dirty and full of rats. An unreliable bus to get you to the uni and minimal social experience unless drugs count as social... Great gym though!
This is such an old place, so far away from the town and yet incredibly expensive. It's a waste of money!
Stayed here for two years in a row. Had I filled this survey out last year I would find it difficult to gove anything less than 4 stars. However, my experiences this year compared to last, from being seen as a person to becoming simply a number on a spreadsheet I would not recommend the halls to anybody until it changes
Absolute trash, so far away from uni (30min by bus) have to wake up 7am to catch a 9am lecture. No hot water, no phone signal, very bad wifi, and when you talk to them about wifi theyre like yea go talk to the company. Also since its in the woods and no shops around except the one they provide on site its always empty no food!
Do not stay at Storthes. The kitchen was absolutely awful, no amount of cleaning would make it look nice, not once did I eat/want to eat my food in there. The appliances are faulty and very cheap. The rooms are very expensive for what they are. The shower leaks all over the floor and therefore makes the whole room smell damp for hours afterwards. The internet is fast but at times was down for days on end with no compensation. It is 20 mins from uni. The venue (the only social space) is often closed to students so they can run private events (to get more money!!) which is disgusting since it is a STUDENT village. They care more about Making extra profits than the students themselves. The fire alarm went off SO many times and it took the on-site staff around 20-30 minutes to attend to turn it off. Very annoying when it’s going off at 3am. If there had of been a real fire god knows how bad it would’ve been since they take so long to get there. Honestly DO NOT stay here.
Pros: Out of town, Staff mostly friendly, Cheap accommodation, Lots of student events. Cons: Car parks don't have 24 hour CCTV as advertised. Security consists of some bloke driving round in a van every so often. Site is open to the public so anyone can just walk in. Place is rife with drugs and criminals, fuel tanks been drilled and people smoking in rooms. Venue has nice food but extremely long waiting times, when your the only one there! Bus service unreliable, supposedly 20 mins in / out of town, on occasions it has taken 1-2 hours. Student rooms are dated. Maintenance is a nightmare; mattresses are terrible, no hot water, cookers are rubbish, water coming through ceilings, showers not working. Fire alarms are not regularly tested. WiFi is awful, provided by ASK4. Phone signal sucks. Regards to the free gym most equipment damaged / doesn't work. Outrageous laundry prices, most the washing machines / driers don't work. The place is infested with Silverfish and Rats, disgusting.
Absolutely great for first year students, so many fun events on site, employment opportunities. the amazing venue with so many wonderful things inside such as the cinema room and there is also a free gym. The staff are so friendly and helpful! The rooms are convenient and everyone has there own ensuite, the communal area in my flat (premium kitchen) was a large space and included a sofa and tv which made it great for socialising with my flat mates. I’ve stayed here two years now and I will be sad to leave it for my final year. Could not recommend storthes enough.
Buses are very unreliable and choose whether or not they'd like to turn up or be on time. When it snows, you've more chance of getting to university on skis than by any other mode of transport. Internet has broken more times than I've had hot dinners (seriously, because the kitchen isn't cracking.) There are enough rats to film a scene from flushed away. Never any milk in the shop, easier to milk a cow at home and fetch that with you. On a good note, the caretaker owns a dog and fetches it with him
A great place to stay! Houses over 1200 students, everyone is so friendly, staff are amazing. Nice and quiet so easy to do my studies. All bills included in my cheap rent that I pay including my internet. Best student accommodation ever!! Loved it so much in my first year that I am staying there again during my second year!! Plenty of amazing facilities around including a games room, gym, a local (and essential) on site shop and a student bar!! Can't go wrong!!
I’ve stayed in student accommodation at storthes hall park for my first year and second year while studying at university of Huddersfield! It was the best choice I could have made, there’s so much to do here, the pub and venue area is great to socialise or get food! The staff are so friendly I love them! The standard rooms are great with so much storage space and ensuite. I also like that it’s in abit of a secluded area, makes the accommodation have a community feeling than just average student halls. The bus journey is only 15 minutes aswell, with the bus stops situated outside uni and storthes reception, lovely views and quite a nice journey to endure, saved me a lot of walking that I would have to do if I lived in town center especially in the dark.
My review is of DIGS Student Accommodation as I didn't end up taking up my accommodation which was reserved at Storthes Hall. DON'T reserve accommodation through DIGS unless you are totally 100% positive you will be taking up the accommodation if you achieve your grades. If there's even a small chance you might choose another uni DON'T sign the contract for accommodation. You CAN'T GET OUT OF IT and will owe them a FULL YEARS RENT!! The only way to avoid paying over £4000 is to sell your accommodation contract to another student (if you can). DIGS won't help you do this - they don't have to because you'll have to pay them anyway. DON'T SIGN UNTIL 100% POSITIVE.
Good time and great with the right people, highly recommend area to chill before or after going out with friends
overall OK just a bit far from the uni (20 min on the bus). The staff are really helpful.
**IMPORTANT ADVICE TO ANYONE STAYING AT STORTHES** This time next year as a second year student you'll be skint and will want your deposit back. If you don't write down EVERY single detail about the place on your inventory form then they WILL withhold some of your deposit. Yours, A fellow poor student.
It's s*** in terms of facilities but there's lots of people there so you're never lonely
Reception, maintenance and security are nice
Great for meeting lots of new people and making friends! Also good value for money, one of the cheapest halls in Huddersfield, but you get what you pay for. If I was to live here again I would get a premium Room as the standard flats aren't modern and haven't been refurbished for years. Theres a few damaged areas in the kitchen on the furniture and the bathrooms don't look very clean. A lot of mould builds up on the roof in the bathroom and the hot water can go off occasionally. Some flats have had brown water coming out of the taps too. The laundrette isn't very well maintained. If you don't like having a lot of maintenance issues then don't go here. The Venue is great to hang out in and have a drink and they also organise some great parties! The alcohol is very cheap! I really like the reception staff as well, they are very friendly and lovely and they also give away some free treats occasionally! Although the flats aren't the nicest of flats, I've really enjoyed living here.
To anyone thinking of booking to Storthes Hall, no matter what, just try to find somewhere else. There are other places closer, just as affordable, newer and better maintained in Huddersfield.
Storthes hall is the worst place I have ever stayed, do not book here! The standard kitchens that most blocks have are horrible, barely ever any hot water and when the water is on it's brown! It's too noisy, I'm all for the student life but it just takes it to the next level. It's too far out from huddersfield, you have to get a bus to get anywhere, over all it is just not a nice place to be, there are wasps nest growing in kitchens and no cleaning services are provided, there are much nicer accommodations in the centre for not much more money, it would be worth paying more for the better accomdation, would not recommend storthes to anyone!
Storthes is an amazing place to stay, besides being a little further from Uni the bus really isn't that bad, its cheap and usually runs on time I've never been late for Uni. It isn't the posiest gaff ever but well worth the money I think, you get a better social experience than anywhere else and meet plenty of great people! Staff are great, the Venue is OK - usually buzzing around freshers, and the rooms are just basic but worth it. I'd deffo recommend staying at Storthes, don't let the bad reviews put you off.
Fab for the social, but not for the faint hearted as you'll be sharing your room with silverfish and have to ride an old outdated bus to uni. Would recommend if you want to make friends.
Brown water, rubbish dryers that don't dry your clothes, rubbish washers that struggle to clean clothes. Gym facilities are rubbish but the sesh. That's allright. Maintenance are rubbish. Reception staff are rubbish when they ain't giving free food. Venue is really good but a bit dead in terms of people that show up. Then you have to think.... it's cheap and it works. I don't regret living here I'm just disappointed because I feel like it has the potential to be the best in huddersfield.
When I first moved in, the rooms and kitchen was filthy and items in the rooms were damaged. The wifi is rubbish, it never seems to work. The location isn't ideal because it means catching a bus and when there's loads of traffic on an evening, it can take up to an hour to get back and also because storthes is so out of the way of everything, i found that it was quicker to go home for placement every week, rather than catching 2 buses. The social species are rarely used by students.
Storthes Hall started off as one of the best decisions when I moved in. Then came the maintenance problems. I spent 6 weeks with no hot water. Even now when the boilers have been fixed I have to shower at 2/3 in the morning to get a hot shower the plumber has been to my room numerous times and has said "it's these showers there's nothing I can do" thus leaving me in winter with no hot shower. Students blaring music at all hours when you're trying to sleep or do work. You're a 20 minute bus journey from uni and town sometimes they're running late or they don't turn up. They wifi is slow and the download speed is shocking so doing an assignment is made even harder. Not all flats have a social space our kitchen only had 6 seats and there's 8 people in our flat meaning we can't all be in the kitchen and have a chat or a meal together. However the social experience on site is one of the positives of staying at storthes hall the venue is a great place to eat, drink and be with friends.
Full of ket heads and drunk that's love to be out from 21.00 till 5am ideal for 9am lectures! Nice location, met some great people and some terrible ones. My biggest mistake was moving here. Don't get me wrong I like going out but not as much as my a****** of a flat mate that loved to play his load baseline all night and all morning. The walls are paper thin , the flats are outdated, ovens in there from the 90s , distance is 5 miles from the uni , unreliable buses , radiators don't work... On the good notes the grounds are lovely and tidy , the on site night club/bar is great... that's about it. Everything else is a bag of crap. Best thing I ever did was leave. If you don't drink , smoke , or if you value more that 4-5 hours sleep this place ain't for you
The bus service is my main reason for not staying next year. I've frequently had buses turn up 15mins late, no bus turn up at all. Resulting in late for lectures. Also I was told buses are every 15/20mins. Well that's a lie. By evenings and Sundays it's one an hour. And most of the day is every 30mins which makes organising your day incredibly difficult. For example going to shopping on a Saturday you've really got to time it right otherwise you end up waiting 30mins for a bus while your frozen shopping starts to defrost
It is amazing place, clean, green, kind staff.
Don't know why people knock it here I love my first year here. Granted yes there is a fair bit of noise. Buy yourself some earplugs and stop wingeing it is student accomadation after all you can't expect a 5 star hotel experience. It's a lovely place to live and such a nice location (as long as you don't mind the daily 10 min bus ride)?and friendly atmosphere:)
AVOID DIGS AND STORTHES HALL… Honestly don’t know where to begin, and can’t possibly sum it all up here, so I’ll just try and cover the basics. Firstly, the rooms are overpriced for what you pay and definitely do not look like how they do in the pictures (they show around the newer parts in the tour). Any faults reported were never fixed, like broken cupboard and mould on ceiling. Water was extremely dirty and serious issue with rats. Overall their contract very confusing and misleading, as I don’t think I’m the only one who is skeptical - [website link removed] when it came to getting the deposit back, they were extremely unclear about the conditions, and as someone else has previously stated, they really do try and squeeze every penny out of you.
Noisey and far away but a great freshers community.
If you want a nice area then go to Castings, if you want an unbelievable experience with an unbelievable atmosphere then there's nothing better
Best first year experience, such a sociable place to live! Maintenance was a bit slow at times but still a great place for first year!
Please under any circumstance, do not come here. Quality is terrible, crammed in like sardines, lack of facilities, then when you try get your deposit back at the end of the year, they will continue to try squeeze every last penny out of you. Do not recommend at all!
Storthes is perfect for a first year student who is looking to fit into new friendship groups as it gives you a chance to meet people other than just your future course mates. However, the standard of living is well below average and constant troubles with the water system and wifi make some aspects of living, near impossible. It would be slightly better if Digs offered a support in times of need (especially water troubles) but that is not the case. Staff are fantastic but rules are put into place by the organisation to allow for profit and nothing else. Would recommend for a year but no more and student needs to be able to care for themselves in bad situations. Fore example, situations where having fresh water may not be possible.
It wasn't ideal with the long bus journey every day, and I didn't enjoy not being able to use the water for large proportions of the year..... I also had some issues with reporting maintenance issues, which on occasion took longer than desired to sort out. It's also worth considering that the atmosphere is certainly vibrant and full of typical student activity!
Shop around although being done up what they show you is not necessarily what you get! For an extra £10 a month there are other places with better facility's and people who actually care !!
It's like a little village, bar, gym, shop and loads of 1st years. Brilliant for meeting new people.
Storthes Hall Park is a nice place to meet new people and gel as a first year, other than that it's a bit of a joke. They raved about this 'great student bar' which holds the 'biggest events in town' but they're a shambles in truth. The gym on site is only useful if you want to run and the shop is a complete rip off. The walls are as thin as paper, you can hear everything which isn't even coming from your own flat at times. Personally my shower was shocking, I had about 7 warm showers all year and the maintenance is basically gluing stuff back together. If you want to meet people then fair enough, go for storthes, only good thing about it. If you do stay there then make sure you write EVERYTHING down on your inventory saying all the problems with your room/kitchen. At the end of the year they literally look for anything to charge you for. I was charged £25 for a notice board full of blue tack which I had not used all year, which will most likely be like that this year.
I tried typing out an essay but there's a word limit so I'll just bullet point my experience. -Admin team at the University has been rude to me on more than one occasion. -Room was filthy when I arrived, wipes were black when lifted off the table -Mould and damp under my bed, desk, and in my bathroom. -Kitchens don't have enough cupboard, fridge or freezer space for the amount of people living in the flat. -Mobile phone signal is terrible on bottom floor flats. -Had water problems a few times throughout the year. -Internet is awful, unless you pay. I use an Ethernet cable and I can barely hold a Skype call. -If you prefer quiet, then I do not suggest living here, so many parties... -Launderette is expensive, in my opinion. The dryers don't even dry more than half the time. -Receptionists are nice and so are the people in the shop. -The woods surrounding the village is nice to walk around :)
This is the worst place I've ever lived. The halls are a state, there are rats everywhere, the water is BROWN and the staff don't care about any of it. There have been so many complaints and requests made to deal with the disgusting conditions and they are constantly ignored. I have almost dropped out of uni on several occasions because living here is hell.
It's a really great place if you want to meet new people and enjoy the social side towards university, it's not the nicest of halls but it's not badly priced!
Decent as a first year experience, but you'd be mental to go back.
Loved my time at Storthes, it's great for first years! There's been a few issues, but nothing the site team haven't sorted. Planning on staying next year!
Really expensive for what it is, in the middle of no where (great if you like walking not so great if you want to get to uni!) If there was a problem, would take approx 1 week to get looked at then more time to get it fixed. No maintenance had been done on the rooms so everything was breaking. The shop was incredibly overpriced and virtually everything was out of date. There was no common areas apart from the onsite "bar" which was cheap but always incredibly dead yet cramped. The internet crashed all the time (the ethernet port for laptops generally worked but that was about it). The bathrooms didnt have adequate ventilation so always smelled damp, causing the whole room to smell musty. Overall terrible experience, I don't know anyone who didnt try to get out of their contract! If they want people to live there, put a lot money into the buildings (make them nice), reduce rent to maximum £60pw (there are cheaper FAR nicer places in town), make the buses more frequent and maintain it!
Long distance to uni, slow unreliable Internet, good social feeling but unreliable source of water / heated water sometimes having none for whole days at a time.
Decent enough accommodation at times if you're someone who is looking for a social accommodation. However, it has its flaws such as the location, some issues with the water and a few other issues.
Wouldn't advise living here, we've had issues of no water, no internet (which is annoying in the middle of doing assignments), and you are completely out of Huddersfield. Also, the party life, it's going to be the same whichever halls you live in. It also gets annoying towards the second half of the year, so don't pick based on that.
So the mattresses are unbearable, the wifi doesn't work, the shop is extortionate, there's several water problems, they make up s*** rules so they can get money out of us, try to fine us for parking, despite there being no parking signs anywhere. Don't book here. You'll regret it and I'm trying to save you from making the mistake I did. Absolute joke of an accommodation.
It was honestly one of the worst places I have ever had the misfortune to live. To start is the 20 minute bus drive. Then the fact that the walls are made out of paper, so my flat was never quite and covered in mold. Also it looks like a set from a silent hill film err creepy. My kitchen or hall way was never clean and the people in my flat were little s****. Bullying and anti-social behaviour was not dealt with at all on multiple occasions. To top it all of the entire complex was left without water for almost a month. My first year at uni was ruined by storths and I don't want others to have the same happen to them. The only good thing I can say is that some of the people you will meet are great.
Lived there first year, was definitely the best place for 1st year, especially when meeting new people. Location was atrocious but if taken in stride its certainly not the worst place to stay in the world
It's alright, average I'd say, compared to other accomodation I'd say it's one of the worst. Many rooms contain damp that they just paint over, some of the kitchens are run down and have cupboards missing. The bathrooms are covered in damp by the end of the year. It needs a serious makeover! The 20 min bus ride to uni is ok, unless you finish uni in rush hour then prepare to be sat for over an hour. I wouldn't recommend this accomodation!
Not great WiFi but great for first years. Party central yo
Storthes Hal, is excellent student accommodation for first year, there are so many students and a lot of events, including my favourite weekly quiz, giving you plenty of opportunities to make friends. I have a standard room which is a great size and furniture is nice, there is also plenty of storage space. All rooms have ensure bathrooms, which I find to be satisfactory. Also, although the halls are quite far away from the uni, there is a regular bus so getting to uni and town is hardly ever a problem.
Wouldn't recommend. there is nowhere to chill out with mates and the rents are ridiculous considering its a 20 min bus ride from the university.
There are rats everywhere. The heating and hot Water doesn't work. The wifi is terrible and the people that work here are vile.
The location is by far the worst about this but if you're looking for standard accommodation with a good price and interesting individuals Storthes should be one of your options
Generally have had an okay experience so far, but problems with water turning brown or white have put me right off, along with that and the awful noise problem here.
It isn't the most expensive place, but even though I'm paying a reduced price of £89 a week, it's still not great value for money. At first, I really liked the location as it was out of the way of everything, but the buses are still quite a pain, so Storthes is only for the best if you're bringing a car. The only social space we have is the (tiny) kitchen, which only has one small table and six chairs for the eight of us. And if someone wants to cook, everyone is in the way. It can be a bit of a nightmare. The social experience, I guess, is okay. For the first few weeks. Everyone is in one place, and so it's easy to make friends. But then after everyone settles in, the constant flat parties can be unbearable if you're not into that. But if you are, I bet it's pretty great.
Not worth the money, too far from the uni, no common rooms, wifi keeps cutting out.
good for first year definitely, we're staying for a second year too. If you ask for something to be fixed/replaced, they will deal with it in a decent time as long as you do actually report it. Staff are (normally) friendly and the rooms are fine if you look after them. People moan about the state of the rooms but that's only because they leave food/wet towels etc which cause it to be in a state.
I stayed in bad at night crying because of how bad it was.
It's the place to be for first years to get to know people well. Value for money however the wifi isn't great and we had a few problems with the water. Other than that first years will enjoy their time at Storthes.
S******* but the community aspect is unrivalled. Brilliant scenery around for walks. Only people who don't enjoy Storthes didn't use it to it's full potential.
Incredible. Surrounded by acres of woods and an amazing place to make friends for life
S*** wifi, amazing social experience and the company are bad.
Having to pay for the halls though I'm not living there due to how sketchy their contract is. I went to a different university this year and they want me to pay. They do not help you find a new tenant either which makes it worse. The location of the halls is in the middle of nowhere. Just to get into town they provide a bus service which you still have to pay for, The showers in each room are pretty much non existent as the only thing that separates the toilet and the shower is a shower curtain. This shower curtain has two modes to it. If you barely make contact with it, it will never leave you alone and if you avoid it it will still touch you. So if you are a female and want to shave your legs in peace then this isn't the place for you. The social area within each flat consists of a kitchen and thats about it. They do have a bar on site, which if you are situated near the entrance of Storthes then you better get hiking because its such a mission! I'D RECOMMEND LITTLE ASPEY!
Very good place to stay just lacks a social space in each flat
Absolute dump. Hundreds of rats outside, not hot water in an entire block, my ceiling started to leak with water, location is terrible, the busses aren't that frequent and the staff on site are very un helpful. If I had to choose again I would not pick this accommodation.
Awful positioning from the uni but otherwise not bad
At the time there was no wifi. I had a damp and mouldy room.
Great place in lovely surroundings, only problem is that there is no living room or sofas in the flats for the 1st years, and no fire extinguishers either
Honestly the best place to be, I absolutely love it...it's defintely the most social place and everyone is lovely. It's so easy to make friends the only downfall is the distance from town but even then it's cheap taxis for students and the bus service is great. The only social place in your flat is a kitchen which is a let down as it wild be nice to have a living room area and the wifi isn't cracking but overall absolutely best place to be.
it's boss for socialising and pre drinking at other flats/blocks before going out! the shower is disgusting and the curtain clings to you and floods the floor but it's an alright room in all! annoying how within the flat there's no where to socialise only at a table on chairs in the kitchen
The kitchen is big, spacious and comfortable however the fridges dont work meat goes off in a day same goes for milk. The rooms themselves are spacious and comfortable. The showers are much better than expected which is a bonus however the bathroom extractor fan frequently doesn't work. One of my flatmates had a traumatic experience were a pipe above here room burst flooding her whole room and took 5 hours to fix!!
It's an okay accommodation for first years as you meet loads of new people in the same situation amd there's a venue on site for you to go and enjoy a night out. The only downfall is the management. They don't do much when things are damaged other than blame you for it. They're friendly though!
Defiantly a good place for first years to stay. Lot's of other first years, good events and useful amenities. It's a bit out of the way but the buses are usually on time and good value for money. The buildings are out in the middle of no where but you will learn to love the fresh air on the morning when you're hungover!
Great place to socialise and constantly party.
Not great accommodation, but the experience was amazing and I would recommend it for first year students
It has been a great year at storthes; met new people and made amazing friends. Totally recommend it for first years.
Could probably do with having a living room area, but the kitchen does suffice. May be a bit too far away from the university but the £15 a year bus card makes up for it:
Party capital of Huddersfield. The accommodation itself is quite awful. Cold/dirty water/run down rooms/overpriced shop only local shop. Social aspect is amazingly good. Amazing for patty goers, awful for none social people
Great place to stay out in the country, cpu sometimes seem too far away. Facilities needed updating though
Nice location although slightly away from uni. Good for being surrounded by other students. Has a shop and a pub on site.
Storthes Hall is fab for first years if you want that student party vibe. It's the bigger student hall in Huddersfield and many first years choose there. You have en suite facilities, but there no common areas in the flat except the kitchen, however there is an on-site pub/club. It's six miles out from the uni but has an excellent bus service for £15 per year. In my opinion, it's a tad too expensive to live there at £100 per week, but they've lowered the price for the year coming so it should be a lot better value :-)
The location of the site is a massive downfall with a 20 minute bus journey. Not only that the rooms are dated and faults and problems with the rooms are just covered up and not fully fixed allowing them to easily occur again.
It's quite far outside of town
Everything is broken and mouldy inside. Absolutely vile state. Is lovely outside on the grass, etc but being inside feels like an unrated hostel. Being so far away from any shops leaves you at a loss when the local store is closed (which charges extortionate amounts for everything apart from booze and snacks). A 20 minute bus ride into uni on a bus that only comes twice an hour is horrid and not worth it for even the low price of the rooms.
Literally the best thing I have ever done in my life living there
It's awesome for freshers, just a bit of a trek but you can get the bus for free so it's all good
Although Storthes Hall is an idea accommodation for a first year student giving an oppertunity to socialise. The rent payments are rather hight , £99 a week for a small, dated room and a grotty, old kitchen is disgusting. Not only that but the price doesn't reflect the 20 minute bus ride too and from the university campus , although a bus pass is only £15 for the year the hassle and distance is not reflected in the steep pricing. The londis situated on sight is also very expensive and the atm machine in reception takes a £1.85 charge per withdrawal. When you are miles away from any other shops or facilities this is unnacceptable. Althought the on sight gym is well priced and offers a wide range of gpof exercise equipment and the halls are well set out in a nice rural position.
Although out of the town the accommodation offers a great reliable bus service to the university and it stops off at the supermarket. It's the perfect place for first year students to meet each other
Middle of nowhere and falsely promoted as the best option
The room itself is lovely, I upgraded to a premium room so I pay £105 per week. However the kitchen is half completed.. Missing cupboards, we have a cooker.. That's rusty! We've complained numerous of times and been told there is no issues. Silver fish in the bathrooms, poor management... The water went brown due to a burst water pipe and we were kept in the dark about what was going on. Oh they gave us a 500ml bottle of water to keep us going for 3 days!
The halls themselves are old, tiered and looks ready to be knocked down. The social space is the kitchen only there's no couches or tv where everyone can get together. The shop always over charges and if things go faulty ie ovens or fridges you have to pay. It's way to far from the town Center, I would definitely NOT recommend
These halls are great for socialising, for example when you're a fresher. However, they are terribly managed. I've had a terrible experience here, the bathrooms grow mould and have silver fish. Also, every so often the water has turned brown for a couple of days, or just turned completely off for days.
