Metalworks is in the perfect location being 5 mins from the centre of campus and right by Selly Oak and the shops there. The rooms are also very nice and the en suite is a dream! Only downside is the kitchen is quite dark because there aren’t enough lights and also there aren’t enough washing machines for the number of residents.
An issue happened on the day I moved out. My room was inspected and I was told to pay £70 for a cracked sink. They couldn't find the inventory I filled in and I asked if they still had the inventory for the previous year (I lived with them for 2 years in the same studio) as I clearly remember writing down the cracks in the sink when I moved in as it was a weird thing to have when you move into a room which is supposed to be repaired of the broken things but they couldn’t find that inventory either. I paid up since it was my fault that I didn’t have the inventory but if the tenant before me had to pay for the sink, shouldn’t the sink been repaired before I moved in? Or after the first year I’ve lived with them? I honestly have no idea what happened but for future tenants, remember to fill in your inventory or even, have a soft copy with you in case the staff decides to rip you off your money and you have no evidence on hand.
The staff is friendly, the room is nice, the communal places are clean. Besides the timed heater not heating up the room, the somewhat lack of privacy when caretakers barge in, the whole living experience is generally good. But 2weeks before I moved out, 1 of the caretakers came into the studio at quite an unusual time (9pm) to check on the locks on the windows, which had been left unlocked throughout the year. The day after, 1 of the lights in my studio went out and I notified both the reception and the portal. A caretaker came (7.50pm) and left a note saying they are waiting for the bulbs. Fair enough. However, till the end of my stay, the light wasn't fixed. If they were waiting for me to move out before fixing the light, fine then.
Excellent rooms with good storage space and large shower. Big desk and bed which is comfy. No need for extension plugs as there are about twenty outlets in the kitchen and seven in the bedrooms plus two USB outlets. Large shared kitchens with plenty of seating and large tv. In a kitchen for six people there are two cupboards and a drawer per person, two cooker/stove tops and two and fridge freezers to share as well as a breakfast bar with six stools and two comfy three person sofas. Communal areas are cleaned once a fortnight which my flat found was enough. There is always activities going on throughout the academic year with prizes to be one and freebies galore! The staff are lovely, very helpful and repairs are carried out usually within a day or two. They have their own mail room too so no need to trek to pollock. It is about a 15-20 minute walk to main campus depending on how fast you walk and only 10-15 minutes to the train station and princes street.
