Part one of review; If you want to pursue BA Hons Fashion design, there is a lot to consider, as a current second year student to the course. Firstly, you’re only paying the £9,250 or £14,000 (international students) to attend the sessions. You have to pay a lot into the projects, such as; sketchbooks, paints, pencils, pattern maker, fabrics and printing. You do get a university bursary, £150 for the first year, £300 for second year and £500 for the final year. This doesn’t fully cover the whole year in comparison. Furthermore, depending on each lecturer, the design teaching staff is poor. For instance; when it comes to getting criticism from feedback, half of it would be vague, therefore it would be difficult to act upon it for future projects. During the studio sessions, I get the impression that each lecturer has a favourite student and tends to work on their improvement, compare to the other students. read more

Teaching staff are mostly pretty bad, they have favourites and seem to only care about these people no matter how hard you work. The facilities are really good 3 amazong sewing rooms, a knit room with lots of extra knit facilities, loads of workshops available to get inducted into to add extra bits into your designs (eg screen printing, metal work, latex) and some of the tutors are really amazing and go above and beyond to help out. Our feedback and marks are always late and I know if multiple students who missed out on opportunities due to lack of organisation from the tutors. Half of my year group have never even met their personal tutor and have never received a response from her. The staff overwork themself and spread themselves to thin which results in them being disappointed in the students for not performing well. Multiple things have been promised to be taught and never have. Always run out of time to have 1-1’s with every student and don’t seem to prioritise the missed ones. read more

I was a Second year Fashion Design student, Was constantly lied to about retaking my second year. Teachers weren’t helpful at all, felt like they were vicariously living through us. Their feedback on our work was never positive and always felt like an attack, it was a very negative and toxic environment. When i failed my resubmission I was basically thrown to the curb because I wasn’t paying them anymore. Also had to go on anxiety supplements 3 months into first year cause of my anxiety and crippling panic attacks. Also never got the vibe from my teachers that they wanted to teach as they always looked angry and gave angry responses. Also my feedback on my resubmission was more of an attack on me and my work the constructive feedback, I have never once heard something positive come out of their mouths. I had friends leave during their second year because they were sick of the teachers and the fact that after we told them our concerns they blatantly ignored it read more

The course is extremely stressful and overwhelming at times, however the facilities and experience is priceless. Getting insight on the industry and being able to see yourself in this profession is extremely exciting, and the projects can be daunting and challenging but overall are rewarding. read more

The first year tutors don’t allow you to be creative and use different methods of research or design that they don’t approve of. Very opinionated, you are told if you don’t create your design the way they specifically want you to they will mark you down for not listening to their opinions such as making the sleeves on a garment out of a specific fabric in a certain width or length. Everyone in my class I have spoken to has said how discouraging they feel, doubting themselves and why they have worked so hard to get to this point. There is little feedback and advice about how to structure your book/work, we are put down when we are struggling with lecturers telling us we’ll never get employed. Some lessons like pattern cutting and garment construction are too fast teaching the lesson, there is no step by step instructions it’s thrown at you and you have a short amount of time to catch up. Pattern cutting the first year lecturer, she is unorganised, refuses to help. read more
