Studying Maths at Nottingham is challenging in a good way. The course leans more theoretical than applied, especially after first year, so you get a really strong foundation in pure maths and proofs. Lecturers generally know their stuff and most are approachable if you actually go to office hours. First year eases you in, but second year jumps up quite a bit—especially with things like analysis and algebra—so you actually feel yourself becoming a “proper mathematician” instead of just doing A-Level methods. There are also good optional modules in stats, programming and more applied areas if you want to branch out. Workload is definitely heavy at times, but the content is interesting and the department has a good reputation. If you enjoy proper maths (not just plugging into formulas), it’s a great place to study. read more
