English Language and Linguistics, BA Hons FullTime

This course has opened my eyes to a whole new world of language and linguistics. The modules are incredibly varied, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy. When it comes to second and third year, I thoroughly enjoy having the freedom to choose which modules I study, it allows me to tailor my course to my preferences and abilities so I’m guaranteed to graduate with a degree I have had the control and desire to work for. The lectures and seminar tutors are consistently engaged with the students, and any confusion is quickly highlighted and amended. Overall, an amazing course! read more

I have mixed feelings about English at York. I had a great personal tutor, and the teachers that I did click with were amazing and changed my education experience. Very high quality teaching on the most part, which you would expect since York is in the top 10 for English. Less snobby or traditional than Durham or Oxbridge but the department still work you very hard. However, there needs to be more literature diversity on the course. You cannot say you a diverse course and shove anything that isn't Western European literature into a post-colonial module and call it a day. The department prides itself on having lots of options to study what you would like but no one I know on the course was satisfied with the options we were given. Most modules also require you to read two books a week, that is if you haven't read all the books before term starts, which is too much. You can't focus on a book and really enjoy it. But overall, a very good course, just be prepared! read more

The experience of studying English here has been fine but nothing special. The course is very content heavy but assessments require the completion of only maybe 20% of said content, making much of the study/reading time feel somewhat pointless. I wouldn’t choose to study here if you’re not highly self-motivated and genuinely passionate about the contents of this course, or it will be a struggle to complete the work when you know you won’t ever need to look at it again. read more

Loved the course content and the 1-1 support from the department. The teaching standards were not consistent and better attention to detail, more formative work and active engagement needed to make me feel like I got my money's worth from 6-8 hours a week. read more

Not enough contact time - barely any in fact. About 7 hours a week of classes. All my friends on other courses get about 15 hours at the very least a week. It sometimes just feels like I'm paying £9,000 a year for a few hours of just open discussion. More contact time required. However, the teaching quality is top class and fantastic. read more

Very broad, varied course, which really stretches you, and encourages you to study things you'd never considered before. Excellent research department and this is reflected in the (mostly) brilliant lecturers and tutors. Interesting emphasis on being a 'global' department, with opportunities to take modules in foreign literature (ranging from complete beginners-Post-Alevel), which I really enjoyed. Assessed mainly by coursework (which is great if, like me, you despise the pressure of / poor quality essays produced by closed-exams). read more
