Assessment methods vary widely to suit the nature of the course unit and each level of study. Lecture units are usually assessed by written exam (multiple choice or essay-based), which are held at the end of an academic semester in either January or May/June. Practical units are usually assessed by experimental report and/or short written assignment and/or written exam. The proportion of independent study assignments increases during each year of study. Year 1 Lecture units are usually assessed by e-learning activities during the unit and multiple choice exams at the end of the semester. Year 1 contributes 6% to your overall degree mark. Year 2 Lecture units are usually assessed by a combination of e-learning activities, coursework andessay-based exams. Year 2 contributes 19% to your overall degree mark. Year 3 Lecture units are usually assessed by essay-based exam. Students also take two 'honours' papers: degree programme-specific examinations comprising essays and data-handling problems. On the MSci programme, students take several MSci specific courses, including a group-based practical unit, a literature review and a written research proposal. Year 3 contributes 37.5% to your overall degree mark. Year 4 The final year is based on a 7-month research project (120 credits), carried out in a research laboratory or fieldstation run by University staff. The project is assessed by a written assignment, a scientific talk, a written report, a poster and presentation and your performance during the project. Year 4 contributes 37.5% to your overall degree mark. In order to progress on the MSci degree, you must fulfil certain progression criteria. Students that do not meet these criteria are transferred to the 3-year BSc. There is also the opportunity to transfer from this course to one of the four-year courses; with Industrial/Professional Experience or with International Study at the start of second year. Programme changes require a first-year average of at least 60% and the application process is competitive. Typical Contextual Offer: Typically AAB - ABC including specific subjects. Practical skills are a crucial part of science education and therefore will be a requirement to pass the practical element of any science A Level taken. Where applicants are applying for science and related degrees, this is likely to be made explicit in the offer you will receive. Applicants taking A Levels are normally expected to offer three full A Levels. If you’re taking more than three A Levels, these won’t be included in your offer. We will only make offers consisting of three A Levels. Please check for specific GCSE/IGCSE subject entry requirements.

So far I’m really enjoying my course in Manchester. Some positives include engaging lecturers who I can tell are really passionate about their fields, and the wealth of resources they provide us with to help us with things like consolidating information and exam prep. Something I wish they’d do is give us more access to past papers. Some of our lecturers do this but not all and it just makes it more difficult to prep for exams effectively, especially since they tend not to give out answers/feedback to those questions. I also really would like if staff would offer guidance and support to students who may wish to pivot from the majority career pathway of research/masters/PhD and perhaps towards other things they are thinking of going into such as the healthcare sector or technology/business industry read more

The course is really flexible, allowing you to change your degree towards a more specific biomedical science degree e.g. neuroscience, and there is also opportunity to switch from a regular degree to one with industrial placement. However, lecture content can be difficult to understand, especially when lecturers provide pre-session work to go over by yourself before the live lecture. read more

I think university rates are appauling for all courses, sure the detail is there but the slides and methods of teaching are second rate and you'll only really achieve here if you do your own work (aka pointless). It's absurd how poorely you get treated for being ambitious and wanting to give back to society. read more
