Points of entry for Japanese Studies BA Hons

Year 1

Entry requirements for Languages and Asian Studies at The University of Manchester

Entry requirements are the formal requirements students need to meet to be considered for a place on a university course. But, each year many universities accept students with lower grades. The bar chart below shows the actual UCAS tariff points of students currently on this course.
A,B,B

Required subjects for Japanese Studies BA Hons at The University of Manchester

Grades ABB This programme is designed for students whose level of Japanese at entry ranges from complete beginner to approximately A-level standard. It is not suitable for students whose first language is Japanese. Whilst we do not insist on any particular pre-requisite subject at A-level, we are seeking strong performance in learning - and particularly in essay writing subjects. The course is very demanding in terms of academic writing as well as language learning and we therefore prefer that at least 60% of one A-level to be assessed on written work, so that applicants are able to cope with the demands of the programme. Typical Contextual Offer: Grades BBB for applicants who meet our contextual offer criteria. For further information and to check eligibility visit our Contextual Offers page. American Studies (4 Years), BA Hons FullTime

Great lecturers and tutors- most content is based on expanding common knowledge and enhancing skills of discussion, argument and analysis. No different from a English Literature or History course, and shares many modules with these Degrees anyway. Content ranges from topics you likely know if you took History or English at A-Level to more niche and interesting modules especially during 2nd year focused on America! read more

American studies is a really great course, and you get to study a lot of different things. However, if you are not a literature student I would recommend doing History and American Studies instead because you are expected to just know how to analyse etc... read more

I have enjoyed my course so far, I found there were a variety of options for french and abinitio German which included studying history, culture, linguistics etc. I found german as a beginner challenging but ultimately worth it. I had an hour a day of german with a small class of 10 (5/6 show up every day) read more

This course is great! The unfortunate thing is that there isn't a great focus on actual language learning, we have a grammar class and an oral class, but we spend more time doing history on this course (which I absolutely hate!). If you are willing to learn about the culture and perhaps prioritise this over the language itself it is the perfect course for you. read more

If you're picking this subject just because you were good at it at school and you're familiar with it, don't! Studying languages at university is a lot different from school! If you really want to see a significant improvement in your skills, then you've got to do the work alone. Uni is about independent work, but you'll find yourself wondering what you're actually paying £9k for! I've been doing this course for a year and I've barely heard myself speak a single word of the languages I'm learning. The uni environment doesn't really encourage you to even want to speak, and you'll hardly get any opportunities to anyway. There are barely any modules where the work actually feels like university standard. There's nothing encouraging you to think differently or inspiring you with new ideas, it's all pretty dull. A Levels was a lot harder than this as well! Basically I'm dropping out of this course. Good luck to anyone doing it next year! read more
