Public Transport
The city is easy to get around by foot and bike; it has lots of walking routes and they are working on a new cycle highway. There are train stations dotted around Birmingham so it would be worth investing in a student railcard. The city has recently introduced a tram system, West Midlands Metro, which has made getting around even easier.
Birmingham is situated in the heart of England and consequently has fantastic connections to the rest of the country and Europe, whether it be by rail, road or air. London is around 90 minutes away by train and the international airport is just 10 minutes from the city centre.

As an international postgraduate student, Birmingham is a lovely city to live and study in. It is much cheaper than London, with a great variety of restaurants, including authentic Chinese food. The city centre has plenty of shops, though it is a bit far from my accommodation. Public transport links are good for travelling around the city and exploring other parts of the UK. I don’t go out for nightlife very often, but the overall atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. I really enjoy the quiet green spots around the university, especially Winterbourne House. read more

Overall birmingham is a very nice place to live although it can be tough at times due to the rise in cost of living across the whole of the United kingdom heavily effecting areas like Birmingham along side London and more, Birmingham is great for food spots having a diverse array of food places to eat from making it so that every day there is something new to try, it also offers a wide amount of shopping malls making it so that many necessities, clothes, and more are a short journey away. The night life in birmingham is quite beautiful whilst having its peaceful and quiet moments it can also be full of liveliness with many events that come around and make it so there's never a boring night. The cheapest place to live for one night is about 40 pounds, quite expensive for normal people. 3 pounds to take bus for once and 6 pounds for rent a sharing bick. In terms of safety, the city centre gets a bit rougher after dark, with an increasing number of homeless individuals and late-night crowds. Birmingham is a large city with a lot to offer. Whether you want to go out clubbing, dining, or sitting somewhere quietly, there are a lot of places you can choose from. Newman University is a 25-minure drive away from Birmingham City Centre, which is where you will find the majority of restaurants, clubs, and general hang out places. While libraries are struggling and have been closing down a lot, we still have some fantastic libraries such as the Library of Birmingham in Centenary Square, which I believe is still the biggest library in Europe. Yardley Wood library has a great reputation, too. Although I haven't visited it myself in a few years. With Birmingham being a large city, though, there is a high cost of living, it can be difficult to navigate, and public transport has been getting progressively worse with time. Some bus routes don't exist any more and are less accessible to people with disabilities these days. Trains are infamous here in Birmingham and the UK as a whole. read more

The city has vibrant nightlife although the appetite amongst students to enjoy it seems somewhat diminished - however this is a wider cultural zeitgeist rather than something Birmingham specific. The restaurants are good and varied while the bullring provides a shopping site suited to most people. The rag market and farmers market continue to exist despite pressures to have them removed and transport is good, with HS2 and new train stations making improvements. Buses are also accessible and frequent. read more

Birmingham really is a great city. The cost of living is really good as when living in selly i have always managed to find a house suitable to my budget. There is so many places to eat and explore like digbeth and jewellery quater and im even yet to experience them myself before I leave birmingham but have heard many good things. The nights out could be better compared to other cities like manchester and leeds but I love the student union and digbeth is a good night out too. The shopping at birmingham has gotten so much better with new shops constantly opening throughout my 4 years here. The public transport that I have used is also really good with selly oak station and university making it so easy to get into central for students and New street is in the centre so easily accessible to many cities. read more

The nightlife on broad street is dying out a little. It’s only busy on a Wednesday due to it being the sports social night and occasionally on Friday and Saturday it’s busy enough. Most people go to digbeth or sellyoak rather than the main strip on broad street (student wise). You’ll see more people who are 30+ on a night out than students below 30, especially on broad street nowadays. There are many cheap shops in birmingham which helps with the cost of living, it’s quite an affordable city. read more

There are cost of living schemes in place at the student union including a community breakfast which offers free weekly breakfast for students, a free shuttle bus from campus to Selly express for safety and a community pantry which provides a free one off food parcel. There are scholarships and funding that you can apply for regardless whether you’re a home, international or a postgrad student. Accommodation costs are fixed - I recommend that the self catered options is cheaper and better to save money. The city is quite big and there is lots to explore from gardens, to museums and art galleries and the infamous BullRing. You can also easily travel in and out to other cities such as attending Warwick races. Campus and city nightlight is quite active and there is absolutely no pressure to drink either at uni! There are also sober social events that take place in the evening. read more

When it comes to public transport, the exorbitant travel costs, outdated technology, and inflexible season ticket plans are bad enough. Yet despite having ITSO technology in use, they still insist on using paper season tickets that are impossible to preserve—these tickets can't even last twenty minutes in my pocket, and that's when they're kept in the official ticket wallet provided! Is there some kind of radioactive substance in my pocket or what? The tickets look brand new yet become unusable, and this has happened multiple times. On top of all that, public transport is particularly prone to delays. read more

Being in the UK second largest city has lots of nice opportunities for student students. The age of the campus means the location is brilliant. The location and close proximity to Birmingham City Centre whilst also being a quiet campus-based University. Campus t has its own train station, it really is its own little academic town. The location of accommodation and the Selly Oak Student housing in second and third year is also unbeatable, at a time when other universities are struggling to have their students, it is commendable what the accommodation team have done, to ensure all first students have housing. read more

Uni life here is the perfect mix of a peaceful campus vibe during the day and an incredible social scene at night. Between lectures, I love hanging out with friends in the Green Heart or catching one of the weekly free community breakfasts at the Guild. The 300+ student societies mean there is always something to do, whether it's a mock trial at the Law School or a "Fab N Fresh" night at the Students' Union. Since the university has its own train station, I can be in the heart of the city in minutes to explore the Bullring shopping center or the vibrant nightlife on Broad Street. It truly feels like a supportive, multicultural community where you can easily balance your studies with a fun and active lifestyle. read more

The clubbings been really great and it’s easy to get to and from with frequent trains running throughout the day and Ubers being readily available for night time. There’s an aldi right next to the uni which provides a great affordable option for food shopping and there’s also a massive Sainsbury’s for the really specific stuff that’s needed, all of this is within walking distance which helps save on transportation costs. read more

Birmingham is honestly the perfect student city, it’s big enough to be exciting but small enough to feel manageable. The variety is incredible. You have the massive Bullring for high-street shopping, but then you have Digbeth, which is full of cool independent bars, vintage shops, and street food (the nightlife there is unmatched). The connectivity is a huge plus; hopping on the train from campus to New Street takes just 7 minutes, making the city feel like an extension of the university. Crucially, it is much more affordable than London or Manchester, so your student loan actually stretches further here. Because the city is growing so fast, there are often roadworks or construction projects going on, which can make travel by bus a bit slower during rush hour. It’s usually better to take the train. Birmingham is getting quite pricey, but that does depend on where you like to eat and shop! The nightlife is vibrant, but there are plenty of options for food and shopping during the day. Bullring is great for shopping and brindley place is amazing for restaurants. There are plenty of hidden gems for foodies outside of the city center too. I really do not enjoy the public transport here though. Bus ticket prices have gone up, which I don't think is reasonable considering the lateness and poor cleanliness of the busses. I do think that public transport can be made safer, as many women still experience uncomfortable encounters on busses and trains. read more
