Read James College Reviews
Full of pretentious people. Most people seem to come to this college because it's known as the 'fun, 'sporty ' college- resulting in it being full of the 'cool' , snobby kids who are very exclusive with each other. I expected people to be more friendly with everyone but people formed exclusive groups with their flatmates. I met a few other people who felt they didn't belong. If you're normal, go to a different college. The james freshers week talks didnt emphasise the mental health / other support available at all. They just talked about sports and fun constantly ! Partying seems to be the priority here. They did do a speech on consent which is obviously important- but that was it. I expected more talks about settling in- my friends from other unis said they had loads of talks in freshers week about homesickness and about how to settle in and where to get support. I felt very alone and I felt like I was the only one struggling- although I met others who felt the same.
Great location on campus and has an excellent layout to create an excellent social experience. A bar and the uni sports centre are all within a minutes walk of the college, and it also has two common room which are open to all James students.
I lived in N Block, which has a reputation for being grotty and horrible, which was entirely deserved. Bugs fell out of my ceiling, the kitchen couldn't fit more than a third of us in it at once and almost everyone's rooms got mould. That being said, it really does make some fast friendships, and literally *anywhere* else you move after it will look like a palace!
Initially I thought a 5:1 shared bathroom (cleaned daily) will be a disaster but I was proven wrong. You will feel like a family in the long run. The college staffs are also very friendly and we have college tutors who you can talk to about any kind of issues. Wifi works perfectly.
Initially I thought sharing bathrooms wasn't going to go well and everyone in the flat would need to queue. But amazingly there was no queue at all and you will feel like a family living under the same roof in the long run.
