I graduated in September 2019. Haven't been able to find a job since then. Development Studies student here and I only now realize that this place has not prepared me well for the workforce AT ALL. They haven't really given me any useful transferrable skills, and contrary to what people this, its not "#1 in the world for development studies" at all. No quantitative or qualitative analysis, no program management experience, no capstone design like LSE or Oxford have. The class strength is also seriously lousy and nobody really cares about their education. Avoid Avoid Avoid. Also, this place is not in the heart of Brighton and there is CONSTANT CONSTRUCTION, you cant hear yourself think. read more

This university's marketing is great but the university and education itself is terrible. Current MA Development Studies student here. All I can say is, I wasted my money. The teachers JUST DON"T CARE and these classes are totally abstract? There can be no way this place is number one for development. Not to mention half the students here think they're on holiday. read more

Came here because apparently the development economics program is good, but it's not. Teachers have no clue how to use online learning and don't teach well. More than half the course is just them assigning reading, so there's no teaching, just self study. On campus housing is lacking. Hot water issues, wifi outages, residences smell like mildew, and prices are astronomical. read more

Meh, at best Sussex is a lower than average institution. Internet is ghastly slow, IT facilities not up to par. Basically the university's marketing is top notch until you get here and realize its not an amazing school. Campus is way too small and out of the way, not that many options for eating, and the conduct of the housing department with covid has been ATROCIOUS to say the least. Didn't receive any hot water for the first WEEK I lived on campus and housing kept saying it would send someone and only sent one two weeks later. Education is sub par, and online learning has been horrendous. read more

International Development, BA Hons FullTime

Came here believing this is the best school in the world for international development. Two months later as a MA Development Studies student, I've learned that the professors couldn't care less, the material taught is highly superficial, and that the 'highly regarded' Institute of Development Studies is just a dilapidated building with almost no facilities. No quantitative methods taught and no meaningful career support, so alongside this course I have to pay extra money to learn statistical methods and programming on Coursera, which kind of defeats the purpose of attending school here. read more

Honestly made one of the worst mistakes of my life coming here. I feel cheated and ignored by the university. Academic curriculum was a glorified undergraduate political science course, and the university administration are some of the most miserable people you can interact with. It's a great course, with lecturers/teachers very interested in most of my subjects. But paying so much for just 8h a week seems overpriced. However we do have access to great resources, both from the teachers online and in the library. read more

I love my course - the staff are super knowledgeable and most respond within 24 hours to emails. In first year I have only had two exams and the rest of my courses have been essay work. There is a massive support network so if you're struggling tutors can help! Only issue is lectures are rarely recorded but actual slides are always uploaded, usually with online links to the key readings and additional ones as well read more

Criminology, BA Hons FullTime

in the second week we had a lecture cancelled. the Criminology course is basically just sociology topics with the occasional mention of criminology. i know they are closely linked however the majority of what i'm studying is al sociology. my personal tutor is great , and the job prospects it will give me is also great i cant faulter them at all . however there is a ridiculous amount of reading to do for each topic i dont understand how i can work earn my food and general costs and do all of this reading i find myself up till early hours in the morning annotating books and reading to which we hardly use in seminars so i think the reading is very tedious and irrelevant to most seminars so far i hope this will change over time. read more

Had fantastic lectures so far and the materials supplied are all useful and interesting. Unfortunately, so far the seminars have been absolutely useless. There has been no discussion of the compulsory texts nor the lecture content. The activities we have been set have so far been mindmaps about very basic topics which anybody from anywhere could answer, including primary school level. I hope they improve as it is only week 2. read more
