Geography with Foundation Year, BA Hons FullTime
The MSc GIS programme at Sheffield has been excellent for building both technical and analytical skills. Teaching quality stands out — lecturers genuinely know their subject and explain complex remote sensing and spatial analysis concepts clearly. Course content is well structured, covering everything from ArcGIS Pro and QGIS to Google Earth Engine and Python for geospatial work, which has been directly useful for job applications. Job prospects feel strong too, with career support pointing towards real opportunities in the GIS sector. My personal tutor was helpful when I reached out, though contact could have been a bit more proactive. Value for money is decent, though international fees are steep compared to the resources you get access to. Overall a course I'd recommend to anyone serious about a career in GIS. read more

I’m currently studying Geography and Planning with Foundation Year (BA Hons), and so far it has been a really positive experience. The foundation year has helped me adjust to university-level study and build my confidence academically. It’s been especially useful in developing skills like academic writing, referencing, research, and critical thinking. The modules provide a strong introduction to key topics in geography and planning, such as sustainability, urban development, and social inequalities. I like that the course links global issues to real-life examples, which makes the content feel relevant and engaging. The lecturers are supportive and approachable, and they understand that foundation year students are still adapting to university life. The workload feels manageable while still being challenging enough to help me improve. read more

Overall, I have enjoyed my course and met some amazing people on it and made some of my closest friends through it. The teaching is to a high standard with an opportunity for a research trip abroad in 2nd year. Although I would definitely look at the modules they will covering over your time on the course as they are subject to change and you need to be sure there are modules that you find interesting and want to learn about further. read more
