Although the job prospects for literature degrees are uncertain in this era due to the impact of AI and other factors, I still plan to pursue a PhD and find a teaching position in the future. This course has undoubtedly provided a solid foundation for my future plans. The professors and tutors are all knowledgeable, patient, and kind, and they provided very constructive and helpful answers to my questions. This semester was undoubtedly intellectually challenging, but I thoroughly enjoyed it!

I know it is hard to teach online this year with COVID-19, but for my subject, we have had no live teaching (bar tutorials). Multiple lecturers have said they didn't have a transcript I could use for their lectures even when they don't provide subtitles (which at best are dodgy), and as a disabled student, it feels very distancing. It takes a very long time to get a question answered or to get essays back (which is somewhat understandable at the moment, but being told the wait is 15 days and then having to wait for more than a month with no communication is concerning). But despite all that, my tutor is absolutely amazing, and was incredibly helpful with my course choices. I am enjoying the course a lot, I just wish the department was more open and honest with us. read more

In retrospect, I would not choose Edinburgh to study English Literature. The texts are stuffy and outdated. Out of the whole world of literature, I honestly think they managed to pull out the most dull, cumbersome texts possible. Of course, not all are so boring, but the majority certainly are. They do not value creative and lively thinking, but rather overly-mechanical ways of approaching texts. The feedback on essays can be hit or miss. The lectures are good, but can be overly dense. read more
