Natural Sciences, BA Hons FullTime

The Natural Sciences course is really flexible, allowing you to take a range of different science subjects and switch between them during the course. However, this also means that it is very intense, with students expected to learn the same content as students taking single honours courses at other universities in their specialist subject, as well as studying up to half their degree in other modules - i.e. doubling the workload. The teaching quality really varies, the lecturers often aren't hired to just teach - instead they are researchers who are required to give a few lectures each year. Therefore, some are really rubbish, although the Chemistry department in particular is pretty good. The number of contact hours is around 30 a week, including 3/4 hours of one/ two-to one teaching from your supervisors. Therefore, the course is very good value for money. However, there are very few opportunities for things like year abroads, placements or language study. read more
