I’ve really enjoyed my MA History course at Birmingham. Seminars are small and discussion-focused, and lecturers are approachable specialists who provide detailed feedback on essays and dissertations. Support is excellent, with personal tutors, dissertation supervisors, and all lecturers offering regular office hours that anyone can drop into, making it easy to get guidance and stay on top of postgraduate study.

Required subjects for History BA Hons at University of Birmingham
A Level History, Medieval History or Ancient History is preferred but we welcome applications from candidates who can demonstrate an interest in and an aptitude for the study of history and politics. Acceptable subjects include: Ancient History, Anthropology, Archaeology, Business Studies, Classical Civilisation, Drama and Theatre Studies, Economics, English Language, English Language and Literature, English Literature, Environmental Studies, Geography, Government and Politics, History, History of Art, Law, Medieval History, Modern or Classical Languages, Music, Philosophy, Psychology, Religious Studies, and Sociology. If you are not studying one or more of the above then please contact us to discuss your application.
If you are not taking A level History then we will require GCSE History grade 7 and at least one humanities subject at A level or equivalent.

History has been an excellent course at the University of Birmingham and has been taught to a very high standard throughout my degree. The level of contact hours has been reasonable overall, although I would have appreciated slightly more, particularly in second and third year where they decreased quite noticeably. That said, this reduction was largely balanced by the increased independent workload, especially in third year due to the dissertation, which made the structure manageable. The quality of teaching has been consistently strong, and I have particularly valued one-to-one meetings and personal tutor sessions, which have been extremely helpful. The course content itself has also been engaging and well designed. Overall, my experience studying History at the University of Birmingham has been very positive. read more

History at UOB is bad value for money. I’m assuming history elsewhere is the same cause the contact hours are so low but we’re really out here paying about 40 quid for one lecture read more
