Ok, currently the strike action has ruined my final year at the university which is effecting my mental health and the chances of me passing my degree, staff haven’t put any extra classes on to replace the ones missed (exactly 2 months worth) and we’re not getting our money back...

We are applying a 'no detriment' approach to marks and grades to ensure no student will be disadvantaged as a result of the action the University has had to take in response to COVID-19. I know it musn't be easy, it might be worth reaching out to your dedicated student support advisor or Hallam Help for some further guidance on how to improve your mental health while studying from home. I have just finished my first year at Sheffield Hallam University. I have met some great people and am thoroughly enjoying my course and time spent here. The University has some great features such as it's library with an amazing Bloomberg suite. In addition, the university also has a super nice student union, where they serve some great food, and offer some good deals.

Worst university in the UK. Support services are a joke, lecturers don't care. The campus is dreadful and messily laid out with stinky carpets. There's no where near enough seating in the library or anywhere else. The food is expensive and gross. The Internet is slow and times out. The toilets always stink vile.
Hi, thank you for leaving your review. I'm sorry to hear you do not think our support services and campuses are not up to standard. Each student has 3 dedicated support advisors looking out for them to approach for advice on anything to do with their wellebing, academic or employability. If you do not think you are recieving the relevant advice then you can contact someone at Hallam Help hallamhelp@shu.ac.uk on to see if they can arrange for you to speak to a different advisor. Our libraries are often very busy particuarly durign exam periods which is why we have added study spaces in other buildings around the campus, if you don't know where these are then you can ask at the Hallam Help desk and they will happily point them out to you. If you want to report any issues with uncleanliness you have expierienced on campus please also report this to Hallam Help so it can be dealt with accordingly. We are constantly investing in our campuses to improve study spaces and facilities our students have access to and we aim to improve all of the above by investing £220million in our campuses over the next 5 years. Coming to Sheffield Hallam university has been one of the best decisions. It’s a great city and a lot to do. There are loads of societies at Sheffield Hallam and there is definitely something for everyone to suit their type.

Careers not always too useful just got directed to a website. Actual campus facilities are good sorry from a lack of seating in the libraries during busy times

Facilities are mostly good but I've been here for about 6 months and haven't been able to connect to the wifi.

The university itself is fine, the issue is the teachers going on strike for over a month and then thinking its acceptable to hand out assignments and then also go on holiday. The fact we also get no reimbursement for the strikes is a joke too.

The university cannot prevent strikes by trade unions such as UCU and we try our best to mitagate these unfortunate circumstances for our students as your learning is our priority. We also try our best to reassure students that the Unviersity and all its services will remain open as usual with the majority of teaching taking place as planned. You can find more information about how we preventing impact of strike action on our students here. It is also worth noting that other Universities will be affected by strike action and this is not just an isolated incident at SHU, however we do aplogise for any inconvenience caused to our students. Not had much career service but it’s decent as a university

The Careers Connect can help you find year long or summer placments and internships to enhance your CV ahead of graduation as well as to search and apply to graduate jobs. I have no experience with clubs personally but know they hold good social events each week. I have also only been to our students union once and have nothing bad to say about it but I need more experience of it.
Hi, Thanks for leaving your review! If you haven't yet got involved in a club or society you can still join up by emailing the society directly. They often have give it a go sessions and even if you are unable to go to training sessions you can get involved in the great social events still to meet new people. There is lots more to take advantage of with at our Student's Union, including skills & training, volunteering, day trips and you can recieve free independent advice from the STudent Advice Centre.
I really enjoy my university and believe it was the right choice for me. I am part of a sports team and it has made my experience here amazing.

Solid uni but could have better facilities

In the next 5 years we will be investing £220 milion in our campuses to improve our facilities for students on all courses, this includes new buildings for Sheffield Business School and the College of Social Sciences and Arts. The campus (Collegiate) has pretty much everything you could want, but the cafe could be considered overpriced. There are plenty of clubs and socs on offer. The union is nice and cheap, good location and has nice food. Can't comment on the careers service as I haven't visited. The internet isn't the best as when we need it in seminars, half of the group aren't able to connect.

My campus (city) is great! I love my building, Charles street! It’s modern and clean. The staff are great. There isn’t much choice for societies/clubs and there isn’t much to offer at the hubs(student union).

Good University with the two campuses spread over the city. Really good facilities for my nursing course and the lecturers are very knowledgeable at what they do.

The campus facilities are very good with plenty of space to study independently or in groups, book practical rooms if required and a help desk. There is a good selection in the cafe but it is of a fairly high price. i would 100% recommend joining a sport or society as there are a great stress relief and way to meet new people.

joining a club was the best idea as i’ve made loads of friends and allows me to use the gym whenever and keep fit

We also have over 35 social sport sessions a week in 18 different sports, we try to cater for all of our students and hope that you all get the most that you can out of joining and attending session, as you say its a great way of meeting new people. I enjoy going to this uni but I feel there could be more facilities and extra help for people with learning difficulties. When I first started it wasn’t clear what help I could get and where to get it. I also think food and drink could be a lot cheaper in the cafes etc as we are playing a lot of money towards education. But the classroom and lecture halls are all amazing aswell as the lecturers

The campus and facilities are very good and up to date, have a lot of good equipment relevant to my course and helps with the practical side.

Clubs and societies are very expensive and pretty poorly advertised. The campus has decent facility’s and overall it is an ok university
Thank you for taking time to leave your review. I am sorry to hear that you find the clubs and societies offered by our Student's Union too expensive and poorly advertised. Societies main source of funding is raised through memeberships which helps them buy resources and arrange events and go to competitions - therefore this is reflected in the price. We hold a freshers fair at the Student's Union in September and a welcome back fair in January to give you the opportunity to explore all the clubs and socities we offer. These clubs and societies are ran by students for students so will not always be advertised throughout the year, but if you head to the Student's Union website there is all the contact information you need to join at any time. Sheffield Hallam is a good university all round but there are aspects which could be improved upon for example making sure students are up to date with everything they need to know.

Each student has an academic advisor they can go to if they are stuggling work at anytime of the year, advisors will also listen to your concerns and offer advice on resources to use to enhance your learning. Course reps are elected on your course to gather feedback from students on teaching, assessments, support and whatever concerns you have regarding your studies - they will then raise these concerns to resolve issues on your course, so this is a good point of call if you do not feel you are recieving the information required. I have loved my first year at Hallam, the work spaces are amazing and the help and support that has been available to me throughout my time has really made moving across the UK ten times easier.

Absolutely dreadful experience. The university gives zero cares about its students and leaves them to struggle and suffer even when asking for help. The tutors are absolutely awful in this sense also, although a couple of good ones just couldn't do enough for their pupils ;but are very hard to come by. The university also doesn't care about its staff. They are full of excuses, the experience is dreadful. No one is kind and helpful. Tutors crap on the students life goals and aspirations if they're not in line with their own personal beliefs. Some tutors are disgusting and call out disabled students and have told some it's their own provlem for being sick, and induced panic attacks in others purposefully and not listened. Awful.

Every student has 3 support advisors; 1 academic, 1 personal and 1 careers who you are able to go to at any point during your degree to find support for these areas or advice on where else you can recieve support. We are glad to hear you have experienced some excellent support from a few of your tutors, however we apologise if you do not feel this is reflected in other staff. We welcome students from all backgrounds and support them with whatever they aspire to do beyond university, so we are dissapointed that you have been made to feel like this. If you believe there is an issue discrimination by disabilty then please report these concerns internally so we can deal with the issue and find out who is accountable. Fantastic lecturers that encourage independence but are always there for support if you need them. Encourages a practical approach allowing you to gain a lot of skills that are useful in postgrad study and employment.

Very bad they went on strike for 2 weeks twice
Hi, thanks for leaving your review. I'm sorry if you are a student that has been affected by the strikes that have occured this academic year. The university cannot prevent or forsee strikes by trade unions such as UCU and we try our best to mitagate these unfortunate circumstances for our students as your learning is our priority. We try our best to reassure students that Unviersity and its services will remain open as usual and to schedule alterantive staffing arrangements with the majority of teaching taking place as planned. You can find more information about how we preventing impact of strike action on our students here. It is also worth noting that other Universities will be affected by strike action and this is not just an isolated incident at SHU, however we do aplogise for any inconvenience caused to our students. Pretty disappointed in SHU. We spend £9250 a year to go here and yet they still try to charge you for things such as printing or books. The careers advice centre was also hopeless, many students struggle to find jobs and they don’t even try to help you with it. On top of this there are a lot of strikes at important times of the year which are very bad for people’s grades / hand ins. Finally the student union is the most expensive bar in town when everyone else’s student union is subsidised.

In terms of printing services and academic books not being provided - this is something that is similar across other unviersities and we do offer support for those struggling to finance unviersity. Thank you for your review, we are pleased to hear you value the teaching and facilities here at Hallam. Our recent award of Uni of the Year for Teaching Quality 2020 in the Sunday Times Good University Guide is a testement to out teaching staff. We will be investing more and more into our facilities and study spaces over the next five years to improve the student and staff experience.
Love this university. It’s helped build my confidence, shape me as a person and develop my knowledge. Doesn’t deserve the stick it gets from uni of and I find it very belittling when people like me who simply learn differently to them find the non-Russel group unis to be a joke. People learn differently, not an issue

I study Games Design/Art and the facilities available to me are great! The city campus feels safe and inviting as a first year student.

Great experience and beautiful campus
Thnak you for your review. I'm glad that you had a great experience and loved our campus. We have a new campus masterplan which aims to develop Sheffield Hallam into an even better and more beautiful campus for our students to enjoy whilst they study with us!
During my expirience I found both educationak development and developed a greater insight into the professional world and what career would best fit me. I also found the staff to be very supportive of any mental health difficulties that I was facing often helping and directing me to helpful services.

One of the best universities I have heard of. Sheffield Hallam University is in top 5 most modern universities in UK. So many opportunities if you are a SHU student.
Thank you for your review, our university and students union, put on lots of opportunities for our students, including over 100 student lead societies and 35 social sports sessions across 18 sports, a multitude of volunteering opportunities as well as lots of social events at the Hubs our purpose built student union building.

We have lots on offer for our international students and our dedicated International Experience Team are there to help you transition into your life in the uk. We have our Culture Connect mentoring scheme; Conversation club which enables students to interact and meet new people; the University Language scheme - to help international students develop their english skils before beginning their studies and lots of different trips for our students to get involved in. We pride ourselves on ensuring that all of our students feel welcome and make Sheffield feel like home.

Amazing freshers events. Societies are really friendly and easy to join (BUT not cheap). Really cheap amazing accommodation. Staff are so helpful - even replying over Xmas.

Spent 3 Years here studying journalism, it was the worst 3 years of education I've ever had. Course ranking dropped from 8th to 36th within the three years which highlights the glaring issues. Teachers don't care at all, favoritism with students is riphe facilities are basic, library's a joke, the course offered no trips of practical insights. I could go into so much more detail but it wouldn't be worth anyone's time reading it. Its a shambolic university and a completely joke of a course. I recommend everyone to go to university of Sheffield or to stay away from hallam completely.

The best university for a hands-on experience at learning Computer Networks, Security and Forensics! Yes we have CISCO Switches, Routers, Firewalls and more all at our labs available for student use anytime!
