Sociology, BSc Hons

When studying Sociology at the Uni of Portsmouth, I found all the tutors very welcoming from the start to the end. It felt as though you were all in it together. By the end I was able to contact teachers and my tutor for any extra help that was needed in 1-1. All in all achieving the highest of my potential.

I absolutely love my course, it is so interesting, we get so much support and advice. My personal tutor Jemma was an absolute star and went out of her way for me! The teaching standard is so high.

Sociology With Psychology, BSc Hons

By On 28th November 16

Okay so they lie to you when they say these two courses merge together well, they don't. Psychology is absolutely separate to sociology and they do not tie in together. In the first year there are no seminars for the with psychology students and if you are doing sociology you will be used to doing loads of very interactive seminars, so it is very strange to go from that to sitting in silence for two hours twice a week being lectured at and then having no opportunity to discuss what you have learnt. Sociology side of this course is absolutely brilliant and I whole heartily recommend!

Sociology, BSc Hons

By On 17th August 18

As previously explained no support given academically or emotionally. She had no support with essays or exams. Lectures were boring and didn't compare to her college lectures. Tutors read from slides no teaching involved all her knowledge came from her Alevels. She learnt no new Information from university. Basically she taught herself.

Sociology With Psychology, BSc Hons

By On 14th May 19

The course is great though it could do much better on topics. In my opinion the seminars should be more focused on teaching rather than making us talk to each other. It makes me want to avoid seminars, even though I understand the reasoning behind it (Psychological course). Hopefully this only happens during the first year. There is a great range of topics. I have been interested in everything the lectures i attended taught. The teachers are great and the personal tutors listen to your issues; offer advice. The teaching in seminars and lectures is great, i like it. The teachers know how to spot your essay writing weaknesses and the feedback you will get will be spot-on on what to fix.

Criminology And Forensic Studies, BSc Hons

By On 3rd June 19

This course is fantastic for those interested in CSI, policing and forensic science who want to study their field of interest whilst gaining criminological information. The latter can be dull — as it’s all theory and academic, but the former makes up for it. The lecturers and tutors are brilliant, as many have working experience in their specialist fields, and guest lectures fill the spaces the staff do not. Personal tutors (who lead weekly seminars, making sure you’re up to date) can be hit or miss, but that’s the same with any study. The course content is fantastic, and you’re taught with examples from real crime scenes occasionally. Finding a job offer with this new style of degree seems daunting and finding something more specific than “police officer” or “CSI” is tricky. Overall, this course is fantastic due to the great staff.

My course was interesting and I got offered a job within the police after university. However, I wish there had been more practical application Of skills rather than so much theory.

My personal tutor did not attempt to contact me once and they do very little for you in terms of job prospects. This uni doesn’t care about your future it just cares about getting your money.

Law With Criminology, LLB Hons

By On 27th July 20

I absolutely love studying law and find that my personal tutor along with a few other lecturers can not do enough to support me not just academically but personally. I have a few lecturers who care more about my mental health and well-being than grades, which is a breath of fresh air and makes me feel truly valued. Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be much communication between the Law and Criminology departments which makes it difficult to do a combined degree, and therefore I would recommend doing one or the other .
