There are simply far too many students for the university to cope with. However they do not care about this and consider students little more than profit margins. They refuse to take criticism and take no pride in the kind of doctors they are turning out. I am utterly ashamed to be associated with the university

By member735046 On 24th November 18PBL is quite tricky getting used to but the lectures are really useful in knowing what you actually need for the test. I've had multiple meetings with my tutor who has been really kind and helpful. The course is really tough and stressful so I'd definitely recommend making revision resources like flashcards from the start but ah well, we all know what we signed up for when we picked medicine!

By UoMLove On 30th December 18PBL is a bit rubbish, but its not the all and be all, legit this course is sick here. Compared to my friends in London, Oxbridge and Edinburgh, this uni gives you world-class medical training that'll put you in the most amazing places for FY1/2 rankings. Legit, you're set if you can get around the s******** of pbl. After that, the clinical training is creme de la creme.

By member743646 On 15th November 19UoM Medicine was 5th in the rankings when I applied and then it dropped down to 26th when I graduated. It is essentially “teach yourself medicine”. Teaching was incredibly poor - PBL was led by clinician scientists in pre-clinical years - with them telling you to look up the answers in your own time when you had any questions. Lectures were not focused to the curriculum. Clinical years - there were too many students and the hospitals couldn’t cope with the numbers. You’d often be turned away from the wards as 2-3 PBL groups would be assigned to a ward. And clinical skills tutors - ours went off sick in 3-4th years - we only got them towards the end of 4th year and before finals. You can really tell the difference - noted to me when St Andrew’s students came in 3rd year (they knew so much more!). Now given that it’s one of the biggest medical schools in the UK - I would honestly recommend applying to a medical school that actually teaches you and doesn’t rob you of your tuition fees.

By member451625 On 18th October 20Value for money-first and second year you get a fair bit of teaching. If you want guided teaching, then PBL based courses ARE NOT FOR YOU -especially not Manchester's PBL. When you enter clinical years you still pay normal tuition fees, with about 5-6 hours of teaching per week plus expected to be in the hospital about 7 hours per day. Placements can be VERY EXPENSIVE as you're expected to travel a lot. In terms of teaching quality, personally find the content of 1st/2nd year lectures to be of little use to me now that I'm in clinical years. In later years your teaching is given by hospital doctors as opposed to lecturers and this is much more useful and incredibly high yield. A key thing is that our main exams are MCQs and you will not be told which questions you got wrong, there's very little feedback for these exams. OSCEs are run very well with good feedback and guidance.
