The teaching staff are very nice but the course is too genneral mainly covering the basic theoretical side and lack of practical activities.

Graphic and Communications Design, BA Hons

I was so disappointed with this course. It really damaged my passion and confidence for design. Uninspiring with no acknowledgement of attempts to try new things. You’re much better off here just copying other designs as people seem to find a way to get away with it. No reward for creativity here. Most of the lecturers are extremely narrow minded and write off things that they subjectively don’t like without any real constructive feedback — leaving students annoyed and confused. Once, a fellow student didn’t have the correct folder upon hand-in and the lecturer refused to accept his work unless he got the correct one despite noting if he went to get the correct one he’d deduct 5 marks for being late. After the student complained, he got his mark back as the lowest pass mark possible. He complained again and the head of the course amended it to a 2:1. This is just one example of the unprofessional manner of some staff. If only I had more characters...

Fashion Design, BA Hons

First two years were amazing with great tutors who were enthusiastic about our work. Left for an internship in September 2017 and returned autumn 2018 When returned the course had a completely new course leader who unlike in previous years, final year was run by a guy who had no experience in education but instead had experience in the New York fashion industry This is way too old school for what a modern course needs! He never had anything good to say about our work and was often plain disrespectful about our work -making many of us cry. I felt like I could never discuss my ambitions creatively whilst in Final year & it always had an affect on my personal life on this course. I developed depression and just felt worthless due to the criticism received. In the 2nd semester of final year I managed to pull it together (without the help of the main tutors of the course the garment techs were the best)but do NOT study here under the new course leader!it’s toxic!!

Do not take this course if you have any desire to produce anything creative. A very very tiny amount of the course is actually designing projects and the briefs that are given to you are terribly boring with very little room to incorporate your own style as a designer. Any work presented that is not to the lecturer’s taste will be shot down immediately. There is no time for personal projects outside of uni because of the countless essays and exams about things that aren’t even related to the course such as modules that are basically about computer science and environmental science. Completely regret taking this course, I’m prepared to graduate without a portfolio

For a graphic design course you'd be surprised at the lack of quality or creativity in the class and teaching staff. Any sort of different view to the teacher is instantly crushed. If you have any prior knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. then the lectures will feel like having your head smashed against a wall with how basic they are. In addition the majority of lectures will be completely pointless to turn up to, they're basically 3 hour homework sections so the lecturers can go get coffee and fill up their allocated time for the week. Be prepared for client briefs which only suit the lecturers and will be mind numbing to complete. The essay lectures are even worse, challenged with writing 2000+ words on the history of why chairs look a certain way. A course that basically judges off how you got there and not what the final product looks like. Just stick out this course so you can get somewhere else.

Art and Design, BA Hons

Interesting course, covers lots of different specialisms in both art & design. You are not forced to specialise to a specific area and you can have lots of variation from your module choices. Teaching is overall of an okay standard and the technicians are really helpful. The studio spaces and technician rooms are good spaces to work in.
