Poor teaching quality whereby harassment and discrimination goes unpunished. This makes for a toxic course culture whereby students think this is normal for working life. The majority of tutors are good but overshadowed by a minority that enjoys bullying 18 year olds. Spoken to alumni outside of the course who think that certain tutors should not be teaching anymore. Outdated course syllabus that is increasingly irrelevant (a whole module for business cards and letterheads?) and a heavy bias towards certain art styles, meaning that those who do not fit the mould are not given the same opportunities as others. Live briefs cater to said house style and have little variety. Unless you like to lino cut, don't go here. If you're a digital artist, go to Leeds instead. This course won't value you. At least, not unless you graduate and become successful. Then I'm sure they will happily try and take credit for it.

very stressful and intense workload (being someone who has come from working fulltime) I enjoy the course but it does cost a lot of money having to 3D print and make models all the time. The learning curve is quite high too being someone who has never done design before I felt it quite the struggle to adjust.

Fashion Design, BA Hons

The first year tutors don’t allow you to be creative and use different methods of research or design that they don’t approve of. Very opinionated, you are told if you don’t create your design the way they specifically want you to they will mark you down for not listening to their opinions such as making the sleeves on a garment out of a specific fabric in a certain width or length. Everyone in my class I have spoken to has said how discouraging they feel, doubting themselves and why they have worked so hard to get to this point. There is little feedback and advice about how to structure your book/work, we are put down when we are struggling with lecturers telling us we’ll never get employed. Some lessons like pattern cutting and garment construction are too fast teaching the lesson, there is no step by step instructions it’s thrown at you and you have a short amount of time to catch up. Pattern cutting the first year lecturer, she is unorganised, refuses to help.

Plenty of projects to explore you inner textile designer in you! I have thoroughly enjoyed the course so far and have enjoyed learning numerous amounts of things I never thought I would be! Its definitely an experience coming to university but loving the course your on too, really helps! No issues about my course, extremely looking forward to taking my new skills into second year in Weave (Constructed Textiles). Something which I never knew I was so good at, can't wait!
