Wildlife Conservation, BSc Hons FullTime

I really like my course, as I have been able to go into depth about a lot of interesting topics. It is really varied which helps to keep things interesting; with a range of modules from organismal diversity to environmental economics, and even more in the second and third years. The lecturers are mostly enthusiastic, but some do not add much more than just reading off the lecture slides. I use blackboard regularly to see what work I need to do and to catch up on lectures and notes, but I think it would help a lot of students if the assessments and assignments were collated and detailed somewhere on Blackboard, as many times I have not been able to have access to a description of what my assignment is and have had to ask friends. Another positive is that this first year course has many similarities to other courses so you don't just work with people in your course but more ranging from marine conservation to zoology.

The teaching varies massively - some lecturers are amazing, some of them less so. It's the same with the modules, it totally depends who's teaching. I think it would have been worth it if soo many trips weren't cancelled. I feel like I really lack practical experience and I'm worried about getting a job, even with a 1st. My personal tutor doesn't really talk to me and has never met me inperson. read more

The staff are all amazing, and really friendly and supportive however just did not enjoy the course itself. I was hoping to do the course and get a job somewhere knowing I have the basic knowledge of zoology and some animals, however all we’ve done is Maths, IT, Biology & Chemistry as well as a foundation year project. This is fine except I haven’t actually learnt a single thing about any animal so it really is just a bridge gap to getting on a zoology course. I honestly wouldn’t recommend the course read more

I love this course as it allows me to explore different parts of zoology without having to entirely specialise. Not knowing what you want to work with in the future is scary when you're going into a course, so having a more broad overview helps with defining what your passion is. The lecturers, partially those with smaller classes, are always willing to answer questions from students and can help with placements in the future. From my experience help is always there if you are simply just willing to ask. read more

I'm loving my course so far, I appreciate the wide range of modules and specialisms available so I have options to study all the things I'm interested in without many limitations. There's a lot of field courses available that go up to around £2k, but they're super worth it for diss opportunities and just the experience of studying abroad! Mostly great teaching aside from some who go too fast through content. Most are also not only good teachers but are engaging so you actually enjoy listening to what they’re teaching. I would advise brushing up on physics and paying attention in first year oceanography if taking Tides Waves & Marine Energy module in second year as they seem to assume everyone in that module is an oceanography student and has a good grasp of the physics already. Even so, in that module some of the lecturers are very engaging so it’s not super boring. Overall, my Marine Biology degree has been an amazing experience and I have learnt so many skills and key knowledge to take into my working life. Due to lecturer strikes, I have missed many lectures, resulting in a loss of money where these lectures that are missed are completely disregarded. I have had some issues with specific lecturers in the past, including not communicating properly, giving us assignments with the wrong tasks to help us complete them and assignments that were not related to the lectures of the module. However, this is just a minor few and, overall, lecturers always seem keen to teach on what interests them and take the time to go over harder theories etc. My personal tutor was great within my first two years, though I have had limited contact with her this year. Overall, what I have got out of the course is the key thing, which is the course has made me narrow my eyesights onto the career I want to have in the future. read more
