Location is way too far for any social events or even uni. There is a shuttle bus but there’s no point to it bc it’s never on time. Either 10 min early or late so you can just wait at the bus stop for ages. Hall management doesn’t give a fuck about the students. They just do their job and try to make us much money from them by saving on them. For example heating is awful and it’s always cold due to the person having to be there to turn it on and it only works for 3 h max so during a winter night you wake up in the same temperature that’s outside and after it doesn’t have time to warm up bc you have to go to uni, and the circle continues. In addition to that maintenance work takes ages and you have to keep asking till it finally happens. The bar that’s advertised is open only during the first week and shop hours get smaller every day. Internet connection is bad or non existent. Also random checks that happen regularly without your consent. Awful experience, choose Panns Bank.
The internet ranges from unuseable to slow for start, the washing will cost you £3 per time, on the extremely rare occasion that this will actually dry your clothes. They advertise a bar that was closed within 10 days of arriving and hasn't opened since, they also advertise a shop containing essentials (this shop doesn't sell eggs or bread and is mostly food past it's sell by date and frozen pizzas or alcohol) Not to mention that this shop is also only open from 6pm-9pm despite previously being advertised as 3pm- 9pm which only lasted a couple of weeks before they cut the hours by more than half. Since moving in less than 6 months ago (Mid September 2016) - there has been more than 10 instances where repairs have had to be conducted in the flat that i reside, including the freezer breaking and food being spoilt (Which was not replaced by anyone), This also includes the hot water being off for more than a week. Oh and the waters not drinkable -- AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE--
This is just gonna basically be all the information i wish i had known. At first it seems great, but firstly you don't have cleaners, and they inspect weekly which is annoying. If you're going for the on site bar don't, its been shut all year. the showers are rubbish, you have to press a button like at the swimming pool, they have no pressure either. Room sizes vary which is unfair especially when you are all paying the same price. It's always freezing, and the heaters don't do anything . The staff are rude and don't knock before coming in half the time. If you want to take your car don't pay the parking fee you can park outside the gates for free. The student union bus is a joke, never on time. Washing machines/dryers are shocking and cost a fortune. Overall would recommend staying at different halls if you can, because you're really far out from uni and sunderland centre. Also one of the flats is genuinely haunted, I'm not even kidding you.
Very loud pretty much every night and rude responses given if you ask anyone to tone it down. No good if you have 9AM starts. On-site staff don't seem to care but I suppose it's to be expected. The room and flat checks are beneficial and give good feedback, however the social experience is terrible. Bar was unable to stay open, therefore it seems to be there without a purpose and the shop's opening hours are getting lower so is barely open for convenience. Maintenance isn't too great since both showers in our flat have been acting up for a while and toilets in other flats took a long time to be fixed. Cold and hot water tap are the wrong way around. The WiFi is accessible and has decent speed. It's far away from anything so be prepared to get very friendly with the metro or wait too long for the minibus that never arrives on time. The common rooms, however, are in good condition. I would say this accommodation is good if you're the party type, but don't expect to get work done.
Honestly no good if you actually want some sleep since it's loud music and drunk people stumbling in all night, with thin walls, very creaky floorboards and the way it's laid out but the rooms are quite nice and worth the money. Honestly though, I feel a bit left out since there's nothing "social" that doesn't involve drink and being loud. Trust me, I'm game some nights... But not every single night. Wouldn't mind if halls' floors and walls were quieter.
Personally I loved the Forge, and if your going to Sunderland Universty I wouldn't stay anywhere else, it is a little bit out of the way but there are bus routes and metros near by. The 'Meeting Place' (the on site bar) is a fantastic facility to have a quite drink, or to start your night out, it even does food for them hangover days! They also have a shop for your last minuet drink or food, and there's a free cash point. You will find small problems with the forge and complain whilst your there, but it's still the best student accommodation you will find :)
Good value for money, security/management do their job well. Very noisey halls of residence, no good if you have early Thursday morning lectures after the student night. Location looks appauling & unsafe but it is quite central. If you're looking for cheap halls choose the forge, otherwise live in a better located, higher quality halls.
