The location is perfect, 5 min to the uni, 10 min to the city centre but the room is terrible, really small and old-fashioned. The bed is single so you nobody cannot sleep at yours. No common rooms so no social experience!!
Overall an awful experience. I have been living here for 9 months and I hated every minute of it. At first, my flat had ants in the kitchen area and bedrooms. One of my flatmates had mole on his bedroom wall. Sometimes the hot water was disrrupted for days, and when the water came back there was a very loud, unpleasant noise even during the night. During the winter, we were told that the heating will be disrrupted because of 'maintenance works' (I never understood why these works have not been conducted during the summer or warmer days, and why did they wait to do this during winter). Our windows are very old, with a metal rudimentary closing system and sometimes you can feel the wind blowing into your room even if it is 'closed'. The management makes mistakes in communicating important data to tenants and does not take responsibility. If this is one of your choices of accommodation, I strongly recommend picking another one because you will regret choosing it.
Unlike halls managed by the uni, maltings is externally managed and very profit driven- no cleaners unlike the uni, you are responsible for all cleaning. Wifi is shocking and management take no responsibility for it, you have to directly contact the provider if it's an issue. Despite paying £127 a week for the room, you have to pay another £5 a week to park your car in the car park. Compared to halls which are a similar price on campus, the value for money is very poor, smaller rooms in maltings and sometimes maintenance fixing things can take quite a while. Good points- great location for town, only about 10 min drive. Campus is a good 25 min walk unlike the claims on the halls website of it being shorter. The rooms, despite being small, are nicely set out and look good. Lovely social space with a kitchen, seating areas and vending machines. There is also now an onsite gym as well as a co op shop open every day which is great.
Lovaine Flats is the type of accommodation you think is nice, dislike a little then realize how amazing it actually is. When I moved in I thought we got a lot of things, like an oven, kettle and all inclusive electrical and water +shower. I came to realize that other accommodations offered by Northumbria have more luxuries; like living rooms and sofas. But me and my flat mates agree, we have the best location and price + social experience offered by any other accommodation here. We are right next to everything in Newcastle, it's never more then a 20 minute walk. The communal space is just plastic chairs and a table, but you'll understand why when you go to flat parties. Living as a student we suffer from many hangovers, living in Lovaine no longer makes that a problem, simply because were a 5 minute walk form every lecture, most other students are envious of this attribute. So I say, if you want flat parties and ease of living, minus some luxuries. Lovaine Flats is the place for you!
As one of the cheapest accommodations it is what you pay for. Not the prettiest of buildings. As a coursemate once said: "It looks like a prison." It also lacks a lot of space, there is barely enough room for the bed, desk and wardrobe in your room, and the only common space is a kitchen. However the management are great, if anything is broken they fix it within 24 hours!
