Not worth the amount of money they charge at all. Literally all it has going for it is decent security and it's 3 mins away from the John Dalton building. Stay in Wilmslow Park instead same price but 1 million times better
The location and the people there were good, but everything else was terrible - but if cockroach infestations, locks that break, flooding, black mould, no sofas and power cuts every 3 months (electricity and water) are what you want you can get all that for the low, low price of £145 a week then go for it :)
Well, what can i say. the most dreadful uni year of my life, was placed with awful flat mates as we specified to be with certain people because of a previous bad experience. The room we had was bog standard not worth £150 a week, walls were already peeling, a hole in my door, fag burn in the curtain bit like your cheap skeggy B 'n' B had about 5/6 power cuts and water outages since being there, kitchen doors hanging off, what looks like cum stains all on the furniture in the kitchen which again was bog standard, very dissapointed as went to flats on lower floors and they were worth the money. the heaters never heated the room were always too hot or too cold. Just an awful place not worth the money.
Only positive is the location and social life. Everything is is below average, laundry is awful (the dryers do not even dry your clothes because anybody can open them and stop the drying), rooms and dated, heating is terrible - heaters in bedrooms only stay on for 5 minutes at a time (in all bedrooms), kitchens are small, dated and dirty when you first move in, staff are useless, maintenance take weeks to respond to anything you need fixing. There are plenty other student accommodations nearby which are so much more modern and better value for money - don't waste your money paying £147 per week for this s*******.
Didn’t really enjoy my time spent at new medlock house - seemed really expensive for what it was. In my opinion not a very sociable halls, however it is very close to university which is handy. Staff were fine and dealt with any issues if I had any
Not good value for money. Room was practically falling apart, several maintainace requests before issues were resolved. Shower broke, toilet seat broke, door broke, mattress worn to bare bones, filthy curtains. Gym is not on on site and is rubbish. Cleaners never clean. WiFi signal awful. Great location though, near town, uni and clubs.
Awful depressing place. Drains don't work, shower constantly not draining properly so floor constantly wet, shower mouldy due to above and fan not working. Smoke alarms covered. Hob and oven controls missing numbers so have to guess what temperature and ring you are using. Cleaning supposed to be fortnightly prior to Christmas none for two months. Noisy, thin walls. Common areas in flats dark, dingy and depressing. Absolute rip off for the money would not advise existing here
Pros- location, large bedrooms and kitchen area depending on the flat, furniture is alright but depends on the flat, kitchen door is soundproof so you can have music on without disturbing other flatmates. Ensuite is incredibly useful and great to have, Reception staff are incredibly nice and maintenance are friendly and helpful. cons- walls between rooms aren't soundproof you'll be able to hear each other having sex, showers a bit dirty and old, heater is iffy and doesn't work on some occasions. If receptions closed when parcels arrive prepare to have to hunt for it or wait a while, I have lost my parcel on 2 occasions so I just send my parcels to my home address than uni. You won't know who your roommates are or what they're like until you move in so if you're a neat freak or hate noise this might not be the best place as you can hear peoples conversations in the next room pretty clearly and the hallway echoes.
Pros: Close proximity to the uni and buses. Helpful not sharing a shower. Small flat size is good. Cons: Internet is very unreliable. Rent is very expensive- you'd expect newer facilities for that price. No proper social experience. If you have loud and messy flatmates, sleeping is not possible. No guarantee of being put in a flat with at least one person who is of the same gender. Reception can sometimes be closed when parcel delivery people come, so be prepared to wait for your stuff. The accommodation is close to the motorway, so total noise pollution is high. First term had a lot of fire alarms being set off in the block in the early hours of the morning. Heating also cuts off and isn't powerful enough.
Nothing gets fixed, the whole building smells. My ensuite has no proper ventilation so everything smells damp all the time. The noise levels (traffic) are insane and the curtains don't block out the lights from sirens. Also report everything in your room because if you don't you'll get charged (£71) for issues that have remained unfixed from the previous year. Staff are friendly but unhelpful, everything is done slowly and to a poor standard. There's constant drilling and it always starts at 9am, they also make a lot of surprise visits to the flat at stupidly early times. Experienced a massive bug problem that they did nothing to fix. A HUGE waste of money and living that close to uni isn't worth it as you don't make friends, you can't sleep and everything is of a low quality.
This place sucks. The staff are rude. The place is grotty. We had fire alarms every night at 2 for the first three weeks and two long ass power outages where all the facilities were unusable. None of us have been remotely compensated for this. Also if you have something broken at the begging of the year it will stay broken. Compared to the standard of the other acomadation this is NOT worth the money.
Worst accommodation, staff lazy, if you make complaints about anything they don't do anything about it. cleaners don't clean, they a lot of the time just walk into flat and leave cause decide it's already clean enough. Always noisy from them drilling yet no work looks like it's been done . They do water tests and light tests almost every week so you aren't able to have quiet enjoyment of the halls. They take ages to give you your post , even if you know from the carriers that it has been delivered they still won't give you it . You pay £142 a week for this is a joke . Complete waste of money
Good accommodation in terms of location near MMU. But the staff here are so poor, and fail to give you a good service. I was overcharged for my first rent installment which left me in debt for my first weeks at uni. They know very little and the staff at reception are useless with most problems or concerns. Maintenance staff aren't the best either and tend to leave things unfixed or problems half solved. I've had an awful first year experience here, but am aware this may be one of few bad experiences. The cleaning staff however are lovely and the cleaning ladies in particular are very friendly and always say hello. Accommodation can be loud at times, but that's student life for you! Would highly advise people to stear clear from living in block E... It's the absolute worst.
DO NOT STAY HERE. Cockroach infestation before we arrived- issue hasn't been sorted for 3 months - I am now having to commute to university and they won't give my my rent back. the cleaners don't clean and the place is a general mess. Complete waste of money considering birley house is just a ten minute walk away with exeptional cleanliness and is 30 pounds cheaper!
As a MMU student and having lectures in the John Dalton Building it made it easy to get to and from uni by living so close however, it's not worth the money! Internet cuts off. Water cuts off. Staff aren't very helpful.
wonderful placement for city centre and university, however a huge flaw in the management of this place. Staff have no interest or power to correct any issues in flats. Kitchens have pests and are in dire need of refurbishment, mine had no skirting around the counters and had mouldy food under them from the day i moved in. Walls incredibly thin and corridors are very echoey, may sound like nit picking but with very heavy fire doors for each room, slamming doors are a daily source of disturbed sleep, even from people just using the bathroom. TL;DR: good placement, but extremely expensive for what you get.
PROS: Great location for MMU & Oxford Road; Lots of shops nearby without having to go to city centre; Staff are friendly and very helpful; Maintenance team are helpful and prompt too; All bills included & unlimited; Each flat has one larger room, presumably for disabled students so you're lucky if you're given one of these; Free gym at another Unite accommodation 10 mins away; free kitchen cleaning is nice; walls and doors are pretty soundproof. CONS: Internet constantly cuts out; Heating isn't good, it turns itself off when the sensor reaches a certain temperature but doesn't heat the entire room; Living room isn't comfortable or cosy; Not much bedroom storage so don't bring too much! OVERALL: New Medlock was my last option but I'm happy I ended up here rather than a more crowded flat. The price is very high though, so I won't be staying another year. Ideal for first year students new to Manchester due to location and support.
Way too expensive for what you get in comparison to other halls with en-suite facilities, like Birley which are much better value for money and more well equipt for less money a week. However in a good location and well built and clean.
