Absolutely awful. The cleaners don't always turn up, it takes about a week for maintenance to come and actually fix a problem, the internet always cuts out or is so slow you can hardly use it. The washing machines and tumble driers never work properly so sometimes your laundry will still be soaked even though you paid for the tumble drier to work. The food isn't great, basically school dinner quality. Staying in halls is fine if you are a drinker, but if you don't drink at all it basically becomes the fun of most nights having to put up with yelling and loud music which never gets dealt with. The halls themselves are falling to bits, and there are silverfish infestations in many of them. These halls are not value for money, as the terrible condition of them I have no idea where the actual money is being spent. I would not recommend these halls to students unless they have nowhere else to go.
Grant hall is one of seven halls at The Lawns, and is the furthest away from the main Lawns Centre and bus stop. The buildings are old but well maintained, although they seem a little outdated compared to the new accommodation on campus. There are no social spaces in the blocks, only a kitchen on each floor, but the fact that most rooms have balconies makes up for this. There is one large social space at the Lawns Centre, and also several smaller rooms. There is a licensed bar with good prices, and the food is not bad. There is a bus to the uni every 10 minutes, but the walk from the hall to the bus stop isn't ideal. This is a nice hall; possibly a little overpriced for what you get, but nonetheless a pleasant place to begin your university journey.
Loved living in Grant even though I didnt have ensuite- which wasnt a problem at all and actually is proven to get people together and get along which it did. Do not be put off if that is what you get at all! Cottingham is great to live it- kinda wish it was closer to town but for my first year it was great being somewhere like that as it was the first time I had lived away from home. Wish the common room was a bit more up to date and warmer but we did use it and socialise in their occasionally. Used the Lawns bar more often but mainly landings so we could all fit in one area. It was a tight squeeze so kind of wish each block had a common room big enough for all 27 of us. But The Lawns is a fantastic place to be!
Grant Hall is definitely the best hall to be in, yes it is further away however that gives you a bit more peace away from the raucous others from Lambert and Morgan. The ensuites are so worth the extra price, they may not be cleaned very well however you can do that yourself and it's fine if you're a clean person. The village of Cottingham is about a 15 min walk away with lots of little shops and then Hull city centre is about 40 mins on the bus depending on traffic. The lawns food and laundry services are debatable however helpful for first year as it gives you that extra less stress and less pressure on independently cooking straight away. Halls are very sociable dependent on who you live with, you will soon make friends with halls and have great fun at the Lawns.
