From my experience, Wifi Alright The mattress was very worn out and had bloodstains on it. Around 20min walk to university which is very tiring especially if you work while studying. The staff doesn't care if you file a complaint about your roommates on how dirty they are, leaving pots and pans unwashed and littering the floor... They took my deposit because there was water damage to the carpet which was false. They charged me extra for the dirtiness of the kitchen when I left the accommodation, I tried my best cleaning it and did my part. They don't care about who made the mess and who didn't clean all they care about is money.
Make the most of it, these are the best years of your life. It's a cross between a ski resort and a prison camp after the guards have all gone. I have vivid and excellent memories of this place. Not far from town. Social life was excellent when I was there. Lengthy snowball fights in the winter and sunbathing in the summer. Try a run to the monument on top of Castle Hill as a bit of cardio.
Ashenhurst is the cheapest accommodation in Huddersfield and it seriously shows. After a year here I am bored of it- I live in the basic accommodation, and the living room is awful which means you have to spend every minute in your room. The rooms are small, the showers too, and the bath is disgusting (a random pipe drains into it?) The laundrette is extortionate and it's about 20 mins walk to uni (quicker when walking downhill.) Saying that, it's the cheapest accom. So if you have no other choice like I did then....
The accommodation itself is very far from the uni and up quite a steep hill, however I feel that you are getting what you pay for as it is the cheapest accommodation for students in Huddersfield. There is only one small common room coming off the wash room which is rarely used, therefore the accommodation itself is not particularly social, as much as others which have events and other activities taking place in the accommodations.
Location is rubbish, you cannot just "nip out to get something" without having to do a 190 minute round trip to town. Ground floor flats are crap, the windows hardly open so get a fan or stay out when it gets warm. You can hear (and feel) people moving as the walls and floors sound hollow and seem to vibrate when people walk ANYWHERE. Bad value, hot water is a game of chance, two fridges for 8 people, a shower that is as powerful as light rain, bed of nails mattress. Social experience is normal for uni halls (just bring some earplugs if you want to sleep). Wired internet is fantastic, practically useless wifi is crap. I spend as little time as I can here.
Everything that could go wrong, would go wrong with ashenhurst, DO NOT LIVE HERE. There have been kitchens infested with cockroaches, hardly any hot water all year around, no wifi and when it does work it works badly, the stairs have been broken for almost a year and you nearly break you neck everytime you walk up them, the maintenance is awful, and to top it off you have people running around on a night time who don't live in ashenhurst, such as teenagers who think it's funny to knock on doors and run. It's not good.
