Read Ashenhurst Houses Reviews
Ashenhurst is the cheapest accommodation in Huddersfield and it seriously shows. After a year here I am bored of it- I live in the basic accommodation, and the living room is awful which means you have to spend every minute in your room. The rooms are small, the showers too, and the bath is disgusting (a random pipe drains into it?) The laundrette is extortionate and it's about 20 mins walk to uni (quicker when walking downhill.) Saying that, it's the cheapest accom. So if you have no other choice like I did then....
I went to Hudds when it had just changed from a polytechnic to a 'university'. I stayed at Ashenhurst for a year - '92 to '93 - and found the accommodation good, solid, dependable and warm. It was a good place to study and socialise, with a pleasant 'campus' atmosphere. Of course, if you're not gregarious and outgoing it could get a little isolating, but there are normally plenty of people with whom to socialise and 'hang out' - as well as decent facilities for quiet study. It was cheap, but I was happy there - and so were others. My house mates and I still occasionally reminisce about the 'Ashenhurst Year'. Great times !
The accommodation itself is very far from the uni and up quite a steep hill, however I feel that you are getting what you pay for as it is the cheapest accommodation for students in Huddersfield. There is only one small common room coming off the wash room which is rarely used, therefore the accommodation itself is not particularly social, as much as others which have events and other activities taking place in the accommodations.
Location is rubbish, you cannot just "nip out to get something" without having to do a 190 minute round trip to town. Ground floor flats are crap, the windows hardly open so get a fan or stay out when it gets warm. You can hear (and feel) people moving as the walls and floors sound hollow and seem to vibrate when people walk ANYWHERE. Bad value, hot water is a game of chance, two fridges for 8 people, a shower that is as powerful as light rain, bed of nails mattress. Social experience is normal for uni halls (just bring some earplugs if you want to sleep). Wired internet is fantastic, practically useless wifi is crap. I spend as little time as I can here.
Everything that could go wrong, would go wrong with ashenhurst, DO NOT LIVE HERE. There have been kitchens infested with cockroaches, hardly any hot water all year around, no wifi and when it does work it works badly, the stairs have been broken for almost a year and you nearly break you neck everytime you walk up them, the maintenance is awful, and to top it off you have people running around on a night time who don't live in ashenhurst, such as teenagers who think it's funny to knock on doors and run. It's not good.
