Mary Sturge is centrally located and offers residents convenient living in Birmingham. Located on Aston University campus and only a few minutes' walk from Birmingham City University, you couldn’t be in a more perfect spot. Being located on Aston University campus means you have quick and easy access to the Sports Centre and Tesco Express. The city centre and Bull Ring shopping district are only a ten-minute walk away and have all the amenities and forms of entertainment you would want.

Wifi that does not work. No running water in the kitchen. Bedbug infested mattresses and terrible customer service. Could not get a new mattress or have someone fix the taps and drains in the shower for more than a week.
I lived in student accommodation. It was basic, one toilet to share between 12. Unless you paid more for lake side. My second and third year I was with Unite and Opel one much better value for money and experience.
Very bad experience so far. I don’t recommend anyone to stay in this accommodation. They have very poor services and not as per the promises. Customer service: Not friendly and not responsive In-house services: 1) There is no heating whatsoever, insufficient heating services.(after contacting them, they suggested buying a personal heater) 2) Broken appliances which are not repaired even after constant notifications. However they clean the kitchen twice per month. Accommodation is really close to the university. I am sure you are going to find a better value for money accommodation.
Aston was a depressing place to be in as a student and so was B'ham. It was so boring as I hardly knew anyone and I was mainly alone in the halls. 2 flatmates were hardly around!! Unite Students Aston was an absolute joke!!
Was great when it was new but could probably be maintained better. Use to get a lot of smokers hanging around in front of the building smoking weed. Rooms were nice and convenient close to campus. Gets a bit hot in summer and if you open the window you can hear everyone coming out of taxis on Aston street.
After staying in both Mary Sturge and Lakeside, I'm disappointed in the former when it's more expensive than the latter. When warm/hot water runs, there's a squealing noise accompanying it, the bathroom is smaller with less space for toiletries and I can hear other people very easily on either side of my room. It genuinely feels like the walls are paper thin, making me worry about the amount of noise people can hear from my room, which results in it hard for me to properly settle and feel relaxed. The kitchen is very big, however, and there's plenty of space for everyone's food and utensils.
So so expensive for what you actually get. If you have any issues, they are not always dealt with very well, and the fact that our accommodation does not get cleaned even though we are paying more than previous years is absolutely ridiculous. Students, I urge you to really think about whether this is worth your money. The only plus side is the location. Very disappointed with the standard, it has definitely dropped massively over the years of me being a student.
Halls was sold on the promise of weekly kitchen cleaning and monthly bathroom cleaning - GREAT RIGHT?! However 2 weeks into term this was revoked and is such a shame if you live with messy people who trash the flat every day...no sofa or "chill" space in the kitchen like alternatives nearby.
A bit pricey for the room sizes, but set in the best location possible. Situated in the university campus, close to Bullring. Wifi is great when it's not slow!
The only thing it's lacking is a living room.
It's modern and new, and the cleaners come regularly and clean to a high standard

Value for money - The cheapest acc. for 2nd year and upwards. Location - Amazing. 10 minute walk from Tesco/Sainsburys, 15 minutes from the train station, bus station and town centre. Bus stop next to JF takes you to up to the campus but you could walk to the campus in 30/40 minutes. Cleaning - like any acc, if you treat the cleaners right they sometimes to do a bit more (sound like a given but it does go a long way, if you leave the place a mess, they'll refuse to clean it, if the place is clean, they may do some dishes for you) Social space - (if they mean the kitchen/sitting area) it's ok, bigger than most older on campus acc and is a nice big space for parties. Social life - you can get a chance to meet your neighbours and you come and go, I moved in as a flat of 6 so I'm not sure how it is if you are moving in alone. Honestly possibly my favourite acc I've lived in out of AKD, muirhead and Alexander court. Large bedrooms and location are a big plus. Also being off campus forces you to make to most of your day at uni and makes you more productive. And if it's a game changer, you can walk home from Fubar. Hall management - no wed morning fire alarms, no room inspections unless you've done something wrong. It feels a lot more free and like a flat rather than acc.
Cons?
Value for money - still expensive compared to a private let, rent does not include electricity like on campus acc. Washing also costs money per wash and you can only top up £5 minimum (£2.20 a wash and £1 a dry)
Location - only problem is that it is next to the train line so you can hear trains, loud but I don't even notice it anymore.
Cleaning - you rely on cleaners for loo roll (they have the keys to open the dispenser) and if they are on holiday or don't come during the semester break, you won't get any (sounds petty but I thought it should be mentioned)
Social area - there is a common room with a tv, but I never used it as it was in a building on the other side of fortys and it's never guaranteed to be quiet.
Social life - although it's a large site, you can hear party's from every side of Fortys, which sometimes isn't ideal (being in 4th year sometimes you just want peace, but having 2nd year neighbours either side who think going out on a Sundays and wednesdays is normal is a bit annoying, reminds you of the fun of the early years before work actually mattered)
Hall management - porters are not as readily available like on campus acc, if you request something to be fixed it will take as least a week and when you need them they are likely not there as they go between fortys and Lyon crescent in Bridge of Allan. One example is when our arsehole downstairs neighbours set off the fire alarm at stupid o'clock in the morning and because the porter was in bridge of Allan it took him half an hour to get there to switch it off.
